Sri Lanka have included batsmen Kithuruwan Vithanage and Ashan Priyanjan in their 15-man squad for the one-off T20 that kicks off their tour of England in May. Slow-bowling allrounder Chaturanga de Silva, who was initially included in the World T20 squad as cover for Rangana Herath, has also been named. Herath has been rested, while the team will be without the veteran pair of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, who retired from T20 internationals after the World T20.

The team will be led by Lasith Malinga, who took over as captain at the World T20 after Dinesh Chandimal had to sit out due to an over-rate offence and was then dropped on form. Lahiru Thirimanne, who was appointed vice-captain across formats earlier on Wednesday, will deputise.

Though uncapped in T20 internationals, Priyanjan and Vithanage have been included ahead of Angelo Perera, who played for Sri Lanka in February, against Bangladesh. Both aggressive middle-order batsmen, Priyanjan and Vithanage have had encouraging starts to their international careers in other formats. Priyanjan averages 33.33 after seven ODI knocks and Vithanage has scored at 69.66 in four Test innings - all against Bangladesh. Priyanjan also bowls part-time offspin.

Sri Lanka's selectors have officially relieved Dinesh Chandimal of the T20 captaincy and ODI vice-captaincy but did not omit him from either squad.

Five seniors - Jayawardene, Sangakkara, Herath, Malinga and Tillakaratne Dilshan - have all also been rested for the Ireland leg of Sri Lanka's tour, which features two ODIs in Dublin. Opener Upul Tharanga, 20-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella, and fast bowler Dhammika Prasad are in that squad, after encouraging performances for Sri Lanka's A team and in domestic cricket. Sri Lanka play Ireland on May 6 and May 8 before going to England.

The selectors are expected to name the ODI and Test squads for the England tour over the next few days.

England T20 Squad: Lasith Malinga (capt), Lahiru Thirimanne (vice-capt), Kusal Perera, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Kithuruwan Vithanage, Ashan Priyanjan, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Chaturanga de Silva, Sachithra Senanayake, Suranga Lakmal, Seekkuge Prasanna, Ajantha Mendis

Ireland ODIs Squad: Angelo Mathews (capt), Lahiru Thirimanne (vice-capt), Kusal Perera, Upul Tharanga, Niroshan Dickwella, Dinesh Chandimal, Kithuruwan Vithanage, Ashan Priyanjan, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Chaturanga de Silva, Sachithra Senanayake, Suranga Lakmal, Dhammika Prasad, Ajantha Mendis

    where is kaushal Silva.....

  • on May 1, 2014, 8:02 GMT

I hope niroshan will be technically strong not like ashan/Angelo prera/kithuruwan

  • on April 27, 2014, 1:45 GMT

No doubt Upul Tharanga should get a chance. He is very good In last England tour which he played.120,17,41,60,109.

  • vkumar_086. on April 25, 2014, 18:22 GMT

Very good selection for sure. Thirimanne is no doubt awesome against spin bowling but needs to improve against pace bowling.

  • Hareendra on April 25, 2014, 4:26 GMT

I think for the Ireland leg, for the ODIs we should play Kaushal Silva as opener with Kusal Perera. Kaushal Silva has been a prolific run scorer in domestic level and has been wonderful in the limited chances given at Test level. We should make more use of him because he is a very capable batsman.

ODI: Kusal, Kaushal/Dilshan, Sanga, Mahela, Mathews, Thirimanne, Thisara, Kule, Herath, Malinga, Eranga

Test: Kusal, Kaushal, Sanga, Mahela, Mathews, Chandimal, Prasanna Jayawardene, Kule, Herath, Eranga, Lakmal

I feel that Dimuthu Karunaratne has had a lot of chances but has failed to make a significant contribution.

Good move from SLC... yes we must sharpen and give chance to Future SL cricket..... no matter we win or loss......

  • Messa1 on April 24, 2014, 12:59 GMT

keep angelo perera out of this team. He showed to us he is just an over rated batsman who can't even bat against Bangladesh. So keeping him out is the best option to take. With Upul Tharanga he deserves one last chance for the way he played in the domestic games

  • on April 24, 2014, 11:07 GMT

I think Selectors have done a good job. The young cricketers like Vithanage & Priyanjan sholud get the experience in England. Both Players can be used as part time spinners.

  • AS7777 on April 24, 2014, 7:35 GMT

Regarding Shaminda Eranga I think they did the correct move. Eranga is our best weapon in tests in England. Hope Eranga and Nuwan Pradeep will call back to test side. I think Jehan Mubarak might get a chance again in tests as he is in prime form lately. My test team .. Kausal, Thirimanna, Sangakkara, Mahela, Chandi, Mathews, Prassana Jayewardena, Lakmal, Herath, Shaminda Eranaga, Nuwan Pradeep.

  • on April 24, 2014, 7:13 GMT

In T20s Seekkuge Prasanna Should bat No 3, 4. Because he will be our Maxwell.

Very Good selection apart from Angelo Perera and Suminda Eranga. Angelo Perera needs more exposure rather heating bench. Suminda needs to adopt to the UK pitches. Because he is our main face bowler against England Test series. Drop Ajanth Mendis and Bring Suminda. Drop Dilshan and bring Angelo perera

my XI against irlnd: 1.kusal 2.niroshan 3.thiri 4.chandi 5.priyanjan/vithanage/upul 6.angi 7.chathuranga 8.thisara 9.sachithra 10.kule 11.lakmal *i think upul tharanga should be in the middle order rather than opening the batting......

  • on April 24, 2014, 3:27 GMT

Tillakaratne Dilshan go to retire T20 cos he is old. sanath is stupid. I want to player Upul Tharanga or youngest person T20.

  • on April 24, 2014, 2:52 GMT

Why upul Tharanga? Bad selection. Where is Angelo Perera? Where is Shaminda Eranga? Some are very lucky. Some are unfortunate. What was the logic behind?

  • SLsupport on April 24, 2014, 1:08 GMT

    What happened to Shaminda Eranga?

  • smub99 on April 23, 2014, 21:47 GMT

It's frustrating how the selectors keep going back to Tharanga. He's show time and again that he doesn't have the technique to consistently perform at this level. He is the definition of a flat track bully, and cannot play against the moving ball. There is no way he will be able to open the innings in the 2015 World Cup in Australia, and I hope he gets dropped in time.

I like the selection of Dickwella, and would be good to see him get a chance. I also don't understand what angelo perera has done to irk the selectors so much.

  • zavahir on April 23, 2014, 19:00 GMT

Angelo Perera? Come on Sanath play cricket.

  • on April 23, 2014, 17:32 GMT

Vitanage & Priyanjan have very poor technique & much better if they take Kandamby & Mubarak. Sure Chandimal will come back strong. Without dought he is the most tech. corect young batsman.

  • on April 23, 2014, 17:10 GMT

Upul Tharanga had been dropped so many times due to his poor batting specially his inability to play the moving ball out side the off stump. Why selectors cannot give a chance to an up and coming youngster as a future investment

  • Lord.emsworth on April 23, 2014, 16:25 GMT

Wonderful to have a new look T20 team. Lets see how they fare and how much seniors sangakarra and mahela will be missed, and if Chandimal can score freely now that he is not burdened by the captaincy.

  • MilroyL.S.A.Don on April 23, 2014, 14:58 GMT

It's "BLAND" and depressed to see the team list without Mahela and Sanga, BUT this is life, The youngsters must be groomed to maintain our standards.

  • stormy16 on April 23, 2014, 14:51 GMT

Tharanga is a tried tested and failed option.

  • on April 23, 2014, 14:32 GMT

Obviously without a doubt the backup keeper for Chandimal is Kusal Perera, who initially kept wickets on his debut in Australia and took some blinder of catches.

  • on April 23, 2014, 13:51 GMT

What about Mubarak at least for T20? His maturity and form will help SL definitely at this critical moment.

  • on April 23, 2014, 13:30 GMT

I thought Jehan Mubarak will feature with the superior form he has been on the premier leaugue. Angelo Perera nmissing out is another surprise.

Very intresting time for SL T20. They are World Champs now and the vacum that sanga and mahela have left is huge to fill in. Sanga was not only their best No.3 but also most reliable wicket keeper. Chandi's keeping along with his pedestrian batting will now be keenly followed by his critics. Who is the back up keeper if Chandimal is not favoured? Dilshan and Angelo will now have to support Lasith for decision making. Good Luck.
