Sri Lanka in England ODI Series - 3rd ODI

England v Sri Lanka

England won by 10 wickets (with 227 balls remaining)

Some hesitation but the players are dragging themselves out of the pavilion. Pretty heavy cloud around but hopefully we'll be okay for at least some kind of game here. Lahiru Thirimanne and Tillakaratne Dilshan are taking guard and James Anderson is going to take the new ball from the Brian Statham End...

Rob: "Where is Alex Hales!? We don't need Cook, Bell AND Root. They are all quality players but we don't need three players to build an innings and bat through. What we need is more firepower at the top."

Alex: "Rangana Herath is a great pick for this match. Not only can he take wickets, he's an outstanding containing bowler. Between him and Malinga, Sri Lanka have a good chance of making England panic in their run chase."

2.05pm So England first into the field and the chance again to use the new ball in conditions that should be handy for swing bowling. James Anderson will lead the attack once more and he's said England's players should be helping their captain more in this regeneration process.

1.50pm The captains are coming out for the toss and from the England dressing room it's Alastair Cook, so he's back in the side after missing the Durham debacle. Time for the toss, Cook flicks the coin, Angelo Mathews calls head, it lands tails and England have won the toss and will bowl first understandably given the chance for D/L to get involved here and England's success under similar circumstances at The Oval.

England 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Gary Ballance, 4 Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Jos Buttler (wk), 8 Chris Jordan, 9 James Tredwell, 10 James Anderson, 11 Harry Gurney

Mathews said he would have batted first anyway because it's a good wicket and they went well batting first at Durham.

Sri Lanka 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Lahiru Thirimanne, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Angelo Mathews (capt), 7 Ashan Priyanjan, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Sachithra Senanayake, 10 Rangana Herath, 11 Lasith Malinga

1.45pm It's seems to have stopped drizzling because the main cover has been removed. The umpires are happy with the outfield, there's no standing water, so as soon as it's dry I reckon we can get going. In fact, we're going to get a toss in five minutes, good news, and a start at 2.20pm and it will still be a 50-over match with the interval trimmed down.

1.35pm The teams are out there warming up, including Alastair Cook which suggests that he is going to be fit to take part today. But it's not quite toss time just yet. Plenty of overnight rain so a great deal of moisture for this outfield to soak up and there are still some sheets out on the ground.

1.20pm BST Good afternoon everyone, welcome to live coverage of the third ODI between England and Sri Lanka at Old Trafford. I'm Alex Winter and Monty Gardner is with me to bring you all the action - but what action we're going to get is in doubt with plenty of rain around the UK, no play at all in any domestic cricket so far today with several abandonments already. But it is dry for the time being and the players are warming up so we should get the toss on time in 10 minutes.

0.1

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, full a couple of feet wide of off stump, left alone

0.2

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, touch wider and left easily again

0.3

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, much tighter line, Thirimanne forward on off stump and plays with the gentle swing into the leg side

0.4

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, this is the one that slides across the left-hander, able to leave it alone again

0.5

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, another away-swinger and I reckon the batsman was beaten there, slightly feeling for it around the off stump

0.6

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, fuller and swinging in, Thirimanne is late coming forward but keeps it out, maiden to start

1.1

Gurney to Dilshan, no run, good length on off stump, well forward and playing into the covers

1.2

Gurney to Dilshan, 2 runs, touch fuller and driven past backward point, not an entirely controlled stroke but gets two as third man runs around to his right

1.3

Gurney to Dilshan, no run, inswinger, strikes the pad but would have slid down leg

1.4

Gurney to Dilshan, no run, fuller delivery, driven off low on the bat back to the bowler

1.5

Gurney to Dilshan, 1 leg bye, drifts to leg and this takes the thigh pad to long leg

1.6

Gurney to Thirimanne, no run, firm punch off the back foot to cover point

2.3

Anderson to Dilshan, no run, similar delivery, this time ricochets to midwicket

2.4

Anderson to Dilshan, no run, good length, Dilshan from the crease steers it out to backward point

2.5

Anderson to Dilshan, no run, a little short, cut hard but straight to point, Anderson gets away with one

2.6

Anderson to Dilshan, 1 wide, fuller and wider, Dilshan sort of chases it, then pulls out of the stroke but still played under it but it's called wide, certainly borderline

2.6

Anderson to Dilshan, OUT, but the bonus ball works! Anderson produces a gorgeous nip-backer that takes the inside edge to Buttler who holds a solid catch going to his left. Dilshan stuck in the crease, poked forward, the seam movement took his inside edge and he walked off, a third early strike in three matches for Anderson

3.3

Gurney to Sangakkara, 1 run, fuller length and clipped wide of mid-on for a quick single, well ran

3.4

Gurney to Thirimanne, FOUR, too short and wide and cut for four, poor ball, nicely played

3.5

Gurney to Thirimanne, 2 runs, too straight and full now and clipped through midwicket for an easy couple

3.6

4.1

Anderson to Sangakkara, 1 run, just back of a length on the off stump, waited for and watches the swing very carefully before playing out into the gap at cover for a quick single

4.2

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, short at the throat but well played, nicely dabbed down to square leg

4.3

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, full on off stump, driven off the outer half of the bat to mid-off

4.4

Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, tighter line and just blocked around middle and off

4.5

Anderson to Thirimanne, OUT, well, a step down the wicket, Anderson sees him coming and drops his length, Thirimanne goes through with the stroke aiming over cover but just nicks it to Buttler. Not the best choice of stroke it must be said. Came down the track too soon really and then didn't have the nous to pull out of the stroke. A little unlucky not to get more bat on that and send it over the slips but, you make your own luck!

4.6

Anderson to Jayawardene, FOUR, outside edge first ball but it lands short of second slip, a little feel outside off but Jayawardene managed to get on top of it and steer it down but it was still an edge and lucky it didn't carry

Excellent start now for England...

Hello all. That was vintage Anderson earlier, a Morrissey performance that means Sri Lanka's light is threatening to wink out in the Old Trafford gloom... Anyway, here's James Tredwell, first sight of spin today

18.1

Tredwell to Jayawardene, OUT, on line first up, Jayawardene plays around the delivery... and he's gone! Tredwell removes the last of Sri Lanka's senior triumvirate with his first ball, Jayawardene got himself in a bit of a muddle and was stuck heavy-footed in front of off stump, missed the ball trying to work across the line

19.3

There was a thin sound on the replay, England all went up in unison; can't see what else it would have been, as Mathews was playing away from his body, bat above the ground as the ball went past... Jordan to Priyanjan, OUT, nudged short on the leg side, they try to steal one but Bopara's direct hit means Priyanjan is gone! It was tight, the batsman could maybe have thrown himself for the line with a bit more vigour, but Bopara's throw was a peach, he was moving from mid-on and had to swivel around to his left to hit one-and-a-half stumps

Sachithra Senanayake is the next man into the arena, Kula on strike

21.5

Jordan to Kulasekara, no run, goes shortish and outside off, sways out of the way

21.6

Jordan to Kulasekara, OUT, back of a length, Kulasekara jabs at it and steers to second slip, Sri Lanka are eight down! England ripping through, that's four for Jordan, too quick and a bit of extra venom from a shortish ball

KMDN Kulasekara c Tredwell b Jordan 5 (10m 13b 0x4 0x6) SR: 38.46

The good news, for Sri Lanka fans, is that they've twice been bowled out for lower than this

Tredwell continues, Cook opts not to bring back Anderson

22.1

Tredwell to Senanayake, OUT, tossed up, Senanayake goes after his first ball and clumps this down the ground, only for long-on to take a excellent running catch! Chris Woakes was the fielder, did really well to hang on, Senanayake didn't get quite enough of it and SL have lost three for none in four balls!

23.4

Jordan to Malinga, 2 runs, fuller, outside off, leans forward and manages to punch a couple through the covers

23.5

Jordan to Malinga, no run, slams this in very short, smell of burnt leather for Malinga as it whistles through

23.6

Jordan to Malinga, OUT, pitched up, this stays a little low and clips Malinga on the back pad, in front of leg stump and that's good enough for Michael Gough, who raises the finger and drops the curtain on the Sri Lanka innings! Jordan gets his five-for, the first by an England bowler at Old Trafford

SL Malinga lbw b Jordan 2 (7m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

4.15pm: Well, er, that was quick. Sri Lanka have been rissoled, as SK Warne would put it, dismissed for two thirds of the piddling total England managed in Durham. From the 19th over, when James Tredwell came on, they lost 6 for 9, leaving them with their third-lowest score ever. With less than half the overs bowled, it also means England will be out again in 10 minutes to begin the chase. They'll need 68 to win and push the Chester-le-Street debacle firmly to the back of the sock drawer.

End of over 24 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 67/10 (RR: 2.79)
