Sri Lanka tour of England and Ireland, 4th ODI: England v Sri Lanka at Lord's, May 31, 2014
Sri Lanka won by 7 runs
Played at Lord's, London
31 May 2014 (50-over match)

Right, it's actualy clouded over a little, which England will enjoy as they make their way out into the middle. A new opening pair for Sri Lanka with Tillakaratne Dilshan now partnered by Kusal Perera. No change for England though, it's James Anderson from the Pavilion End...

Soham: "Though Gurney is bowling well, I still believe the England bowling line up still needs a proper quickie like Finn especially against Asian teams who are very vulnerable against real pace." Well they've got this chap called Jordan who's bowling pretty well...

10.15am So the sunshine is expected to suit Sri Lanka, can they put up a big score here? I doubt if it's a 300 day, still early season, but you would think Sri Lanka still need plenty, always full of runs Lord's. Spin may come into it a bit more today, James Tredwell for one will be hoping it does. A fixture in the England one-day side for some time now, he still has his eye on a Test spot with a spot up for grabs in the first Test of the summer.

10am Top of the hour and it's toss time. Alastair Cook gives the coin a flip, Angelo Mathews calls heads, it lands tails and England are going to bowl first which initially is perhaps surprising but Cook reckons this wicket might be a touch damp having been under cover for so long given the recent weather. England are unchanged from Old Trafford.

England: 1 Alastair Cook (capt.), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Gary Ballance, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Joe Root, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Jos Buttler (wk), 8 Chris Jordan, 9 James Tredwell, 10 James Anderson, 11 Harry Gurney

Mathews would also have bowled first, saying the wicket looks a little fresh. They've made two changes. Dinesh Chandimal and Rangana Herath are replaced by Kusal Perera and Ajantha Mendis.

Sri Lanka: 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Lahiru Thirimanne, 6 Angelo Mathews (capt.), 7 Ashan Priyanjan, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Sachithra Senanayake, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Lasith Malinga

Uwaisul: "Mahela Jayawardena has scored only one half-century (Asia cup final) in his last 17 ODI innings and averages just above 20. Is he becoming a liability in the Sri Lanka batting line up? Sincerely hope he'll prove me wrong soon!"

9.45am It's been a rather weird series so far with batting collapses galore - and they've been getting worse. Sri Lanka folded at The Oval, it was England's turn at Durham before Sri Lanka plumbed new depths at Old Trafford. What today then? Well surely there will be no collapsing today, absolutely no excuses because it looks a top day for batting and you expect it will be win the toss and have a bat day.

9.30am BST Greetings sports fans, welcome to the Home of Cricket where, wait for it, it's lovely weather!! The gods are smiling on Lord's today - or should that be Sri Lanka? It's a cracking morning with no cloud to speak of and rain a distant northern memory. There are one or two tickets remaining so if you're in striking distance of St John's Wood, come on down (with your mobile of course, don't leave me!)

James Tredwell will continue from the Pavilion End

21.4

Bopara to Sangakkara, FOUR, on the pads and this is imperiously scotched through midwicket, lovely timing and it races away for four more

With that boundary, Sanga has overtaken his partner... He's ticking

21.5

Bopara to Sangakkara, 1 run, taps one towards mid-off and there's one more there

21.6

Bopara to Dilshan, FOUR, slightly full and straight, Dilshan is on the move and on-drives, the bat turned in the hands slightly but it still beats the dive of mid-on - Dillers goes back ahead in the scoring

Bopara's skillz not suited to this surface, from the looks of it... England sweating in the sun

22.6

Bopara gets the shepherd's crook, Jordan replacing him

23.1

Jordan to Sangakkara, 1 wide, starts down the leg side, another wide

23.1

Jordan to Sangakkara, 1 run, full and leg-stump-ish, clipped unfussily through square, just one but that's enough for a raised bat - a half-century in his 350th ODI innings

23.2

Jordan to Dilshan, 1 run, gets forward and dabs a single into the covers, fifty up for Dilshan, too - and that's the century stand, as well. With both batsmen on 50, that is a very neat 100

23.3

Jordan to Sangakkara, FOUR, too much width, Sangakkara flays the ball behind square, all wrists and timing, four more to King Kumar

23.4

Jordan to Sangakkara, no run, straighter line, can't get this one away off the legs

23.5

Jordan to Sangakkara, 1 run, pitched up outside off, the bat carves a sweeping arc but this isn't middled, just one into the covers

23.6

Jordan to Dilshan, no run, tighter from Jordan, back of a length and angling in from outside off, Dilshan plays it with a straight bat

"At one point Sangakkara had a score of 9 off 26. Now he is striking at almost run a ball. Seems like he has observed and worked out the pitch? Or he is feeling too easy with the spins and dollies?" Just playing himself in, I think, Ashfaaq. He knows what he's up to

24.6

Tredwell to Dilshan, no run, slow and loopy wide of the stumps, the batsman gets forward but miscues short on the leg side

Tredwell is doing a tidy job for England, as ever. I imagine his sock drawer is always in wonderful order

"King Kumar indeed. But Kumar means prince!" He's surely worthy of the throne by now, Amos

25.2

Jordan to Sangakkara, no run, angled across the lefty, who opens the face and runs the ball to point on the bounce

25.3

Jordan to Sangakkara, no run, another dot ball, in-between length and Sangakkara punches to extra cover

25.4

Jordan to Sangakkara, 1 run, shorter, on the hips and tucked away for a single

25.5

Jordan to Dilshan, 1 run, a direct hit from Cook at mid-on but Dilshan's desperate slide had carried him well over the line... Cook was a little deep and Dilshan judged it well enough

25.6

Jordan to Sangakkara, 1 run, touch short and outside the line of off, opens the face and runs one to third man

Here's Uwaisul Karnain: "Superbly paced innings from Kumar Sangakkara. It took him 13 balls to get off the mark and also wasn't able to time his shots properly early on the innings. I think this is where young Thirimanne has to improve his game, who decided to charge Anderson in the 3rd ODI after few tight overs."

27.1

Bopara to Dilshan, no run, gets forward to a full ball and finds mid-off with the drive

27.3

Bopara to Dilshan, 1 run, full and punched back, Bopara gets fingertips on it but there's one more

27.4

Bopara to Sangakkara, FOUR, edged... but wide of Buttler, who is up to the stumps, and that runs away to the boundary. Thick chunk of bat on that, as Sanga drove down the wrong line, needed a slip in to take that

28.1

Tredwell to Sangakkara, FOUR, maybe they're not just happy to take the ones and twos, Sanga now scalps Tredwell with a lofted drive down the ground, straight over the bowler's head, shooper shtuff

28.2

Tredwell to Sangakkara, 1 run, slower delivery, on the stumps, worked off the legs

28.3

Tredwell to Dilshan, no run, flatter, grips a little and turned to leg

29.6

Bopara to Sangakkara, 5 wides, that's poor, a leg-side wide, beats Sanga's attempted flick and Buttler can't get to it either, that will be five extras

29.6

Bopara to Sangakkara, FOUR, and Sangakkara rubs some salted caramel into the wound, a sweetly struck chip over mid-off, doesn't quite go all the way but he is bossing proceedings

Sky's WASP toy reckons SL are on for 320+

30.3

Tredwell to Sangakkara, FOUR, superb work from Sanga, uses the feet to narrow the gap and then clatters four through midwicket, not much turn to worry about but he calculated his angles brilliantly

30.4

Tredwell to Sangakkara, 1 run, flatter and quicker, perhaps, clips the outside edge and runs to short third man

30.5

Tredwell to Dilshan, no run, pushed through, maybe turning in a fraction, hits Dilshan on the pad but outside the line

30.6

Tredwell to Dilshan, no run, can't get this one away either

More signs of the responsible Dilshan, he's flowing about as smoothly as a cup of cold coffee but knows that, while Sanga is playing so fluently, all he has to do is accompany him

Sri Lanka still to take the batting Powerplay, so Cook brings Joe Root on, keeping an over of Tredwell back

34.1

Root to Sangakkara, no run, clipped back on the on side and Root and Dilshan have go into a bit of a tangle... Root dived for the ball, seemed to land on Dilshan's back leg, looks pretty awkward on the replay; the result was Dilshan tumbling back over Root and both plays lying in a heap. Maybe a slightly twisted ankle for Dilshan, which isn't going to aid his progress any, there's a short break as he gets some strapping applied

They take the opportunity for a drinks break, as well

34.2

Root to Sangakkara, 1 run

34.3

Root to Dilshan, 1 run, touch wide, cracked off the back foot and this flies out of the middle, maybe Dilshan has rediscovered his vim, takes a brilliant stop from Ballance to prevent a boundary

Root to Sangakkara, FOUR, lovely work from Sanga, gets forward and the whistles a flicked drive through midwicket for another boundary

34.5

    • TM Dilshan 67 (106b 4x4)

    • JM Anderson 7-1-38-0

Now it is time for the batting Powerplay, Anderson to continue

35.1

Anderson to Sangakkara, 1 run, on the stumps, calmly clipped through square

35.2

Anderson to Dilshan, no run, Dilshan attempts to scoop a length ball outside off, doesn't get close to connecting

35.3

Anderson to Dilshan, FOUR, back to basics now, shovelling wide of mid-on, this was like truncheon aimed at a miscreant, clunky connection but it raced past the diving Cook

35.4

Anderson to Dilshan, OUT, full and straight and bowled him! Dilshan had got across his stumps and attempted to ramp the ball to fine leg - though there was a fielder there - missed again and the ball flicked the back pad before removing leg stump

TM Dilshan b Anderson 71 (142m 109b 5x4 0x6) SR: 65.13

A satisfying crash of ash for Anderson... Not ideal to lose a wicket at the start of the Powerplay but SL might not worry too much about Dillers going at this stage. Mahela Jayawardene is the new man at the crease

35.5

Anderson to Jayawardene, 1 run, full of a length outside off and Jayawardene accepts the challenge straight away, steering a drive past backward point

35.6

Last over of the Powerplay...

39.1

Gurney to Sangakkara, FOUR, full on the stumps and a gorgeous clean strike sends the ball sailing down the ground for a couple bounces four

39.2

Gurney to Sangakkara, 1 run, turned to leg this time, timed well but Jordan does well at deep midwicket to save four

39.3

Gurney to Jayawardene, OUT, length just outside off, Jayawardene tries to clear mid-off and doesn't, easy catch for Anderson down at knee height. Jayawardene didn't get going at all and this was totally mistimed, off high on the bat I think and looped it straight to Anderson

DPMD Jayawardene c Anderson b Gurney 7 (20m 14b 1x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Bill: "Any chance that a Luddite like myself who forgot to buy their ticket can still come over and bathe in the sunshine and cricket?" I'm sure they'll be available on the door. James Tredwell now...

Tredwell to Sangakkara, OUT, floated up, draws Sangakkara down the wicket, he doesn't get to the pitch of the ball, swings to the off side, misses and Buttler whips off the bails for a very easy stumping. Nice bit of bowling from Tredwell and ends a super innings that has put Sri Lanka in a very nice position

KC Sangakkara st †Buttler b Tredwell 112 (156m 104b 14x4 0x6) SR: 107.69

43.2

    • AD Mathews 13 (17b 2x4)
    • HDRL Thirimanne 2 (5b)

44.1

Anderson to Thirimanne, FOUR, full length and a full swing of the bat makes a nice strike towards long-off for four, clean strike that

44.2

Anderson to Thirimanne, 1 no ball, leg side delivery but Anderson has flicked the bowler's stumps so it's a no-ball, he's hurt his hand here too, blood has appeared

44.3

Anderson to Thirimanne, 1 run, length ball, held back a touch, played off the back foot out to deep midwicket

Can Sri Lanka just find a final kick here to take them close to 300? Anderson is back on the field...

46.1

Anderson to Mathews, 1 run, low full toss, whipped off the stumps to deep square leg

46.2

Anderson to Thirimanne, OUT, short, slower-ball, pulled without timing and Ballance swoops at short long leg to take the catch or has he? The fielder is unsure so we go upstairs and the replays almost always rule out these catches even if they look fine to the naked eye. It would appear Ballance got a right-hand under this, although it was a bit of a messy take. I reckon he's got this but will the third umpire be able to tell conclusively? Perhaps not. But whatdoyaknow, he's given it out! Important wicket because Thirimanne was striking it quite nicely

HDRL Thirimanne c Ballance b Anderson 16 (26m 14b 2x4 0x6) SR: 114.28

46.3

Anderson to Priyanjan, 2 runs, back of a length, guided wide of third man, they run hard and come back for two and get home courtesy of a wide throw from Ballance, hero to zero

46.4

    • SMA Priyanjan 5 (3b)

Back to Gurney at the Nursery End...

47.1

Gurney to Mathews, FOUR, gets down for the paddle sweep, meets this on the full and steers it to the Warner Stand rope

47.6

Gurney to Mathews, 1 run, another full toss but gets away with it just push to extra-cover

End of over 48 (12 runs) Sri Lanka 279/5 (RR: 5.81)

    • AD Mathews 30 (29b 4x4)
    • SMA Priyanjan 6 (4b)
    • HF Gurney 9-2-43-2

Finding a few boundaries here Sri Lanka and they're not going to be too far from 300 at all with a good last two. Jordan to bowl one of them at the Pavilion End...

48.1

Jordan to Mathews, OUT, step to leg, Jordan follows him, Mathews is cramped and tries to swing over the leg side, totally miscues it straight up in the air and Anderson pouches the catch taking a couple of steps back at mid-on. Handy little innings from Mathews, without the explosion that Sri Lanka required for a really intimidating total

AD Mathews c Anderson b Jordan 30 (50m 30b 4x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

48.2

Jordan to Priyanjan, 1 run, length ball, Priyanjan steps away and swing off side, getting a thick outside edge that almost carries to third man, lands a yard or two in front of him

48.3

Jordan to Kulasekara, no run, Kulasekara's turn to step to leg, Jordan goes short, batsman tries to cut it and gets a bottom edge almost into his stumps that runs to Buttler

48.4

Jordan to Kulasekara, OUT, excellent yorker and knocks out leg stump. Kulasekara nowhere near it, he stepped to leg again, Jordan fired it right in at the stumps and cannoned the base of leg, England continue to take wickets

KMDN Kulasekara b Jordan 0 (2m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

48.5

Jordan to Senanayake, 1 wide, bumper but it's too big and another wide, chalk up No. 15

48.5

Jordan to Senanayake, SIX, wow what a strike, full length on the stumps and Senanayake swings it into the pavilion! A huge smash, clean as a whistle, right out of the screws

48.6

Jordan to Senanayake, 1 run, low full toss taken to deep midwicket

Not Jordan's best day, struggled in his first spell and he hasn't been quite as threatening with less seam movement available today. Far too many wides too...

End of over 49 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 288/7 (RR: 5.87)

    • SMSM Senanayake 7 (2b 1x6)
    • SMA Priyanjan 7 (5b)

    • HF Gurney 9-2-43-2

Gurney with the last set...

49.1

Gurney to Senanayake, 1 run, low full toss, driven out to long-on

49.2

Gurney to Priyanjan, 2 runs, full at the stumps, this is swung leg side and away from mid-on for a couple

49.3

Gurney to Priyanjan, 1 wide, full and down the leg side, for a you-know-what

49.3

Gurney to Priyanjan, OUT, another low full toss and swung hard at but gets a wild outside edge that goes high but not long enough and Morgan takes the catch running back a few yards from point, a solid catch taken easily in the end, total miscue from the batsman

SMA Priyanjan c Morgan b Gurney 9 (20m 7b 0x4 0x6) SR: 128.57

49.4

Gurney to Senanayake, FOUR, full toss at above knee height, swung over midwicket and finds the Grandstand fence

49.5

Gurney to Senanayake, OUT, another full toss but this is another miscued swing aiming down the ground, off high on the bat, and straight to Cook coming in at mid-on who claims a solid catch

SMSM Senanayake c Cook b Gurney 12 (8m 5b 1x4 1x6) SR: 240.00

49.6

Gurney to Mendis, FOUR, full outside off, reached out for and managed to carve it wide of short third man and that brings up the 300, a great way to end the innings

Having been inserted Sri Lanka will be delighted, they were steady early-on but then built a strong stand between Dilshan and Sangakkara who brought up a fine hundred, his first at Lord's. England managed to take wickets in the last 10 overs but wides and loose deliveries meant Sri Lanka could keep ticking over and without too much from the lower-order have found themselves at 300 which will be England best chase against Sri Lanka if they get there. We'll find out shortly...

End of over 50 (12 runs) Sri Lanka 300/9

    • BAW Mendis 4 (1b 1x4)
    • SL Malinga 0 (0b)
    • HF Gurney 10-2-55-4
