West Indies tour of England, Only T20I: England v West Indies at Nottingham, Jun 24, 2012
England won by 7 wickets (with 2 balls remaining)
24 June 2012 (20-over match)

Right, here's Steve Finn, who has the pleasure of opening the bowling to Smith ...

For all the statheads, Chris Gayle has officially scored a gajillion T20 runs at a strike-rate of 9,000 in the last two years.

2.25pm: Right, the players are out, shaking hands. Time for a huddle ... And, hark at this Tony, Dwayne Smith is coming out to open with Chris Henry Gayle. Just the birthday gift Stuart Broad was hoping for!

2.20pm: "Dwayne Smith has been a great success opening in T20 cricket, he should be opening the innings with Gayle," suggests Tony Ameerally. "Can you imagine the devasting run feast if both were to get going. Also it would be a good calculated gamble." Yes, Tony, but have you seen Lendl Simmons' forward defensive?

2.15pm: Stuart Broad has been presented with a birthday cake on the outfield. He's handed it to his dad, Chris, the former England batsman and ICC match referee, to hold. Looks like the pecking order is firmly established in the Broad family these days ...

2.10pm: So, we're treated to a cup of T20 espresso to end what has been an entertaining - if a little one-sided - West Indies tour. England were expected to polish off the Tests but they didn't leave anything on the plate for the visitors when it came to the one-dayers either. Both teams will use this match as a World T20 sighter; West Indies won their last T20I on these shores, when two experimental sides were on show. The core of England's side is largely the same but only Smith, Samuels and Sammy remain from that day at The Oval for the Windies. Then, left-arm spinner Garey Mathurin produced a match-winning haul of 3 for 9 ... but luckily for England, he's lost his place to some little tweaker named Sunil Narine.

2.05pm: West Indies have won the toss and will bat. Broad - England's birthday boy captain - says England would have bowled anyway. Looks pretty blustery at the ground; though England had better be prepared for the Gayle to come.

West Indies 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Lendl Simmons, 3 Dwayne Smith, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Fidel Edwards

2pm: Afternoon all, Monty here. News from Trent Bridge is that Samit Patel, on his home ground, has been preferred to Tim Bresnan. Perhaps a hint that this could be a slow surface? The rest of the England team is pretty much as expected ...

England 1 Alex Hales, 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Ravi Bopara, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Jonny Bairstow, 6 Jos Buttler, 7 Samit Patel, 8 Graeme Swann, 9 Stuart Broad (capt), 10 Jade Dernbach, 11 Steven Finn

Can West Indies finish their travels with a flourish? Can England get themselves going in World Cup year, this their first T20 without Kevin Pietersen. George Dobell discusses the issues and I've put together the preview of this afternoon's T20.

Good afternoon all. First things first, give thanks that we are blessed with dry weather in Nottingham! There is a very good chance we are going to get an entire cricket match in today. The sun is also trying to appear! Unbelievable scenes at Trent Bridge for the one-off T20 between England and West Indies to close the tour. Myself Alex Winter, along with Monty Gardner to bring you all today's action.

Finn to Smith, 1 run, full bunger on the stumps, chopped into the leg side for one

Finn to Gayle, no run, tight line outside off, angled across and Gayle ... [hushed silence] leaves

Finn to Gayle, 3 wides, back of a length and this trampolines over Gayle's head, over Kieswetter and away for a couple more wides

Finn to Gayle, no run, pushed through on a good line outside off, again Gayle raises his bat out of the way

Finn to Gayle, no run, length ball, bit of width and Gayle has a swing at this one, only to carve out a fresh slice of air

Finn to Gayle, 1 run, full and straight, blocked down the ground and fielded at mid-off, who hits the stumps with the throw - though Gayle was in and the bails had already been knocked off by Finn's knee in his delivery, so England would have needed to take a stump fully out of the ground, presumably?

Finn to Smith, no run, touch short, on the stumps and defended into the leg side

Quiet first over. England won't mind that against this pair

End of over 1 (5 runs) West Indies 5/0 (RR: 5.00)

    • DR Smith 1 (2b)
    • CH Gayle 1 (4b)
    • ST Finn 1-0-5-0

From the other end, it will be Jade Dernbach and his bag of variations ...

Dernbach to Gayle, no run, on the legs, might have rolled his fingers over it, hit on the pad but must have pitched outside the line

Dernbach to Gayle, 1 run, again fired down the leg side, nudged into the midwicket area

Dernbach to Smith, no run, length ball outside off, pushed towards point

Dernbach to Smith, no run, slower ball, down the leg side and Smith gets a tickle on it, fielded by Kieswetter

Dernbach to Smith, FOUR, touch short, effort ball from Dernbach but Smith doesn't waste too much effort banging a pull shot over midwicket for the first boundary of the innings

Dernbach to Smith, no run, short and wide this time, Smith lasers a cut shot straight a cover, where Ravi Bopara puts his ability to open a ring pull on the line and effects a smart stop

End of over 2 (5 runs) West Indies 10/0 (RR: 5.00)

    • DR Smith 5 (6b 1x4)
    • CH Gayle 2 (6b)
    • JW Dernbach 1-0-5-0
    • ST Finn 1-0-5-0

Finn to Gayle, no run, full and straight from Finn, driven to mid-off

Finn to Gayle, OUT, bounced him, that's gone a long way ... up, and Bairstow is under it at fine leg! Gayle goes to a miscued pull shot, just done for pace and the top edge flew just where England wanted it to go. West Indies' box-office opener is in the can

CH Gayle c Bairstow b Finn 2 (13m 8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

The batsmen crossed, so Smith to face

Finn to Smith, 1 run, short ball on the stumps, worked into the leg side

Here's the No. 3 Lendl Simmons, who, despite a scratchy innings in the second ODI, has a decent T20I record

Finn to Simmons, no run, length ball and blocked in front of off

Finn to Simmons, 1 run, full and on off, Simmons drives and gets an inside edge to square leg

Finn to Smith, 1 run, short and angling in, Smith drives at it on the back foot, edging on to his body but they steal one anyway

A lot of weight resting on Dwayne Smith's shoulders now

Dernbach to Smith, FOUR, short and pulled aggressively through square leg for four

Dernbach to Smith, no run, pitched up outside off, slapped to mid-off

Dernbach to Smith, no run, bouncer, well directed and Smith ducks underneath it

Dernbach to Smith, no run, slower ball, almost a full toss but it dips at the last minute and the batsman digs it out towards midwicket

Dernbach to Smith, no run, yorker length, wide of the stumps and at full pace this time, Smith can't get his bat down in time to connect

Dernbach to Smith, 1 run, slower ball, on a length and shovelled behind square on the leg side

End of over 4 (5 runs) West Indies 18/1 (RR: 4.50)

    • DR Smith 12 (14b 2x4)
    • LMP Simmons 1 (2b)
    • JW Dernbach 2-0-10-0
    • ST Finn 2-0-8-1

Finn to Smith, no run, touch short but still a decent length, fizzes through off the pitch and over the stumps as Smith swivels to pull but misses

Finn to Smith, 1 run, full and straight, dug out back down the pitch, hitting the stumps at the non-striker's end and running to mid-off

Two slips in place for Simmons

Finn to Simmons, FOUR, they won't be needed this time, though, as Simmons steps away to dispatch a full-length ball through - literally - Ravi Bopara at cover

Finn to Simmons, 1 run, length ball, nudged to mid-on

Finn to Smith, no run, short and does Smith for pace, cutting him in half as he tries to hook

Finn to Smith, no run, length ball, on the stumps, Smith swings, the ball deflects off something and is caught by Kieswetter - must have been the thigh pad

Another good over from Finn, who's been difficult to get away

End of over 5 (6 runs) West Indies 24/1 (RR: 4.80)

    • DR Smith 13 (18b 2x4)
    • LMP Simmons 6 (4b 1x4)
    • ST Finn 3-0-14-1
    • JW Dernbach 2-0-10-0

Time for a spell from the captain, Broad

Broad to Simmons, OUT, touch short and scooped away on the leg side - again Bairstow is underneath the ball and this time he takes a fantastic catch, diving at full length! The ball probably wasn't there to pull and it was an ugly smear from Simmons, Bairstow running round and in from deep square leg to complete the dismissal

LMP Simmons c Bairstow b Broad 6 (12m 5b 1x4 0x6) SR: 120.00

Broad to Smith, no run, length ball, rolls the fingers over it and Smith misses out

Broad to Smith, 1 run, touch shorter, pulled through square leg

Marlon Samuels to face his first ball

Broad to Samuels, no run, length outside off, driven to extra-cover

Broad to Samuels, FOUR, overpitched and in the slot for such a languid driver as Samuels, who chauffeurs the ball to the deep cover boundary

Broad to Samuels, no run, length ball, wide of the stumps and with the pace taken off a touch, Samuels fails to connect with an airy swipe

That's the end of the Powerplay overs - and England are squarely on top

End of over 6 (5 runs) West Indies 29/2 (RR: 4.83)

    • MN Samuels 4 (3b 1x4)

Graeme Swann on for a twirl ...

Swann to Smith, 1 run, tossed up outside off and pushed to point

Swann to Samuels, OUT, flighted, spinning back and gone! Samuels stayed deep in his crease, was beaten by the turn and there was a scrape of bat or glove and Kieswetter clung on behind the stumps. For the umpteenth time, Swann claims a wicket in his opening over

MN Samuels c †Kieswetter b Swann 4 (6m 4b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

DJ Bravo the new man in

Swann to Bravo, no run, defended playing back in front of off

Swann to Smith, 1 run, full and flighted, pushed for one to long-off

Swann to Bravo, 1 run, on the stumps, goes back and across to nudge through midwicket

Here's Geoff Stimson: "So if Alex Hales, Jos Buttler and Jade Dernbach play Twenty20 cricket for England but aren't in the One Day side - why can't Kevin Petersen do the same?" The key thing, Geoff, is that they haven't made themselves unavailable for ODIs

End of over 7 (4 runs) West Indies 33/3 (RR: 4.71)

Swann to Smith, 1 run, pushed through a bit quicker and flatter, squeezed towards point

Patel to Smith, 1 run, clipped to long-off for one

And with that, here's Alex Winter ...

Well there's your 10...

Dernbach to Pollard, 2 wides, another wide outside off

Not been Dernbach's day...

What a comeback from West Indies, that is a fine score...some excellent hitting first of all from Dwayne Smith and then Kieron Pollard took over with Dwayne Bravo's half-century in between. The power on show was tremendous, some fantastic shots, real entertainment and England were chasing leather in those last five or so overs, 63 from the last four in fact, and they will have to go some to try and win this...Monty's back with you in 10...
