West Indies tour of England, 1st ODI: England v West Indies at Southampton, Jun 16, 2012
England won by 114 runs (D/L method)
16 June 2012 (50-over match)

Here we go then, Jerusalem is playing, quite apt in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, marvellous views from West End. Here come the England openers, Alastair Cook and Ian Bell, they'll be facing a pitch with a hint of green on a breezy morning...and Ravi Rampaul top open up from the Pavilion End...

England team: Cook, Bell, Trott, Bopara, Morgan, Kieswetter, Bresnan, Broad, Swann, Anderson, Finn
West Indies: Smith,Simmons, Bravo, Samuels, Pollard, Bravo, Ramdin, Russell, Sammy, Rampaul, Narine

Excellent tweet from the Sunday Times' Simon Wilde: ‏@swildecricket: "No Gayle or Pietersen - just when 50-overs cricket needed a lift, the bling count will be very low". Certainly agree.

News of the toss...West Indies have won it and have decided to bowl first. Confirming the team news, England play four seamers, so no Samit Patel. Chris Gayle has a stress injury in his foot and could potentially be ruled out of the series but Darren Sammy says he hopes he will be fit for The Oval.

Major blow for West Indies, with Chris Gayle ruled out of this opening ODI, reportedly with a foot injury, such a blow for them and the supporters, who surged to buy tickets for this game on the back of Gayle's return, resulting in a near-sell out 14,000 crowd at West End. For England, Ian Bell is fit and will take his place at the top of the order...

A very good morning and welcome to the start of the ODI series between England and West Indies. The three lions victories in retaining the Wisden Trophy but can the tourists respond in the one-day arena and take something back over the Atlantic with them? Three matches coming up, starting today at West End down on the south coast in Southampton. Toss and team news, the crucial piece being whether Ian Bell is fit or not, coming up shortly...a major bit of news, unconfirmed at the moment, is that Chris Gayle is out of this match with a foot injury, more as soon as I get it...he is not warming up

0.1

Rampaul to Cook, no run, length just outside off and left alone

0.2

Rampaul to Cook, no run, another ball just outside off and left again

0.3

Rampaul to Cook, OUT, now forced to play and caught behind! For the third time in a row a ball in the channel just outside off, this time Cook decided to come forward to play and got a thin edge through to Ramdin. I reckon in a Test match, Cook leaves that but one-dayers wants bat on ball, pushed at it and nicked off for a third-ball duck. Great start from Rampaul

AN Cook c †Ramdin b Rampaul 0 (5m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

0.4

Rampaul to Trott, 1 wide, well wide of off stump and left alone, called wide so England underway

0.4

Rampaul to Trott, no run, angled in to the pads, an appeal but angling down leg, given not out but referred there's only one per innings in ODIs. Is this sliding down? Just enough for Trott because it's only clipping leg stump. Denesh Ramdin coaxed Darren Sammy into that called and it proved a waste

0.5

Rampaul to Trott, no run, length just outside off stump and left

0.6

Rampaul to Trott, no run, left again outside off

First time we've seen any real intent from both players so far...

5.1

Russell to Bell, SIX, big hit, straight down the ground for six, superbly timed, taken off a length and it flies over long off, lovely strike after a little stride down

5.2

Russell to Bell, FOUR, this is a bad ball though, short and wide and hammered away over point to the backward square fence

5.3

Russell to Bell, no run, another straight drive, this time on the ground from a full delivery, well saved by the bowler down low

5.4

Russell to Bell, FOUR, four more, this time pulled around the corner, just dropped in short and Bell crisply timing a pull fine of the deep square leg

5.5

Russell to Bell, FOUR, four more! This time through extra cover, length outside off and Bell reaches out and times it, in the air briefly, away to the boundary

5.6

Russell to Bell, no run, slip comes out and Bell blocks a length ball to point

England in their new one-day kit today, it's got lighter and now back to the older style, more of a royal blue shade, rather than the navy of the last few seasons...here's a change and Sunil Narine... for an early go...

England will be pretty pleased with this total, I think. Here's Dwayne Bravo to bowl the final over ...

49.1

DJ Bravo to Kieswetter, no run, slower ball outside off, Kieswetter goes for the old heave-ho and misses completely

49.2

DJ Bravo to Kieswetter, 2 runs, rolls his fingers over it again, Kieswetter premeditatedly comes across and tries to scoop behind square on the leg side but doesn't properly connect

49.3

DJ Bravo to Kieswetter, 1 run, genuine leg-stump yorker this time and squeezed out on the leg side

49.4

DJ Bravo to Broad, FOUR, round the wicket to Broad, low full toss and slapped behind point for four

49.5

DJ Bravo to Broad, 2 runs, full and straight, lifted over midwicket for a couple

49.6

DJ Bravo to Broad, 2 runs, pitched up wide of the stumps, opens the face and deflects the ball fine, good running brings them another two

2.25pm: So, some useful lower-order nurdling means England have set West Indies 289 to win. That total is England's joint highest batting first in ODIs at the Rose Bowl. End of over 50 (11 runs) England 288/6
