Profile

Ron Hooker was a hard-hitting batsman and lively medium-pace bowler who played exactly 300 matches for Middlesex before ending his career with Buckinghamshire. His allround ability made him particularly effective in one-day cricket, although that format was in its infancy for much of his career. In one of his last appearances in 1970 he took 6 for 6 off eight overs against Surrey in the John Player League. He passed 1000 runs in a season twice, his best summer coming in 1958 when he made 1449 runs, with 12 fifties but only one hundred. In 1965 he took 90 wickets, a return which led many to consider him a probable call-up for that winter's Ashes ... but that call never came. Fittingly, his final big day out was at Lord's when Buckinghamshire met Middlesex in the first round of the Gillette Cup. There was no fairytale ending, however, as Hooker made 0.
