Capable of genuine pace, Tom Mess caused a minor stir on the opening day of the 2001 season - the first summer with the six University Academies - when he took 6-67 for Oxford UCCE against Middlesex, bowling Andrew Strauss with his second ball in first-class cricket. As a student at Brookes, he remained ineligible for the traditional Varsity match, but he remained the UCCE's cutting edge until he left two summers later, by which time he had also turned out for British Universities. Jovial and approachable off the field, he signed with Warwickshire early in 2004.
