Stephen Snell signed for Gloucestershire after moving through the youth ranks at Hampshire. He made his debut for Gloucestershire in 2005 against Bangladesh A, scoring an unbeaten 83 and made his one-day debut against his former club. His best season came in 2008 when he scored 944 runs in the Championship and made his career-best 127. However, after that the returns faded and he averaged under 20 during the next two seasons. He was released at the end of 2010 campaign and the following summer played Minor Counties cricket for Hertfordshire. However, in a remarkable turn of events he suddenly found himself on the way to the Champions League Twenty20 in India after being called into the Somerset squad. They were without Craig Kieswetter and Jos Buttler due to England duty and Snell, who had made two appearances for the county in late August, was drafted in for the trip.
