Profile

A South African of Italian and Namibian extraction, Pepler Sandri made a name for himself on the opening day of Australia's first fixture of their Ashes tour in 2009, when he claimed three wickets in nine overs on debut for Sussex's first XI. An energetic seamer with a lively run-up, Sandri studied law at University in South Africa before playing the bulk of his first-class cricket for Boland. Seeking to make the most of his EU passport, he had trials with Yorkshire in 2008, but missed out on a call-up when the county opted to retain the services of Deon Kruis. Instead he moved to the South Coast, where he plays in the Sussex Premier League with Hastings. Sandri's father emigrated from the town of Piedmont as a 19-year-old on an Italian government scheme.
