On 11 February 1851, Robert McDowall became the first player to take a five-wicket haul in an Australian first-class match. The then thirty-year-old Tasmanian took the wickets of the top three batsmen, as well as the number five and number eight. Born in England in 1820, McDowall played cricket for three more years for Tasmania after the inaugural match took place. (Thomas Rose, June 2000)
