Rupesh Amin, the left-arm spinner who left Surrey at the end of the 2001 season, has signed a new one-year contract to return to The Oval. The county realised that they needed cover for their first-team spinners and Amin will fill that role.

The 24 year-old was born in Clapham and made his debut for Surrey in 1997 but has had few opportunities in the first team. He has played in just 14 first-class matches where his 25 wickets have cost over 42 runs each, while he has only bowled 11 overs in limited overs cricket.

It might be that Amin gets further chances this summer as Saqlain Mushtaq - Surrey's overseas player - will miss the end of the season when Pakistan go to Tangier for a triangular tournament and then on to the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka.
