On another day of rain interruptions and run-rate calculations, Surrey - the defending National League champions - lost out to Northants, a defeat that condemned them to relegation. At the other end of the table Glamorgan, the new champions, fell to a last-ball defeat against Kent, despite Alex Wharf celebrating his call-up to the England one-day squad with amazing figures of 6 for 5. But it wasn't Wharf bowling the fateful final over but Adrian Dale, and with Kent's last pair at the crease Ian Butler, the New Zealand fast bowler, smashed the last ball of the match for the six Kent needed to win - and keep alive their own hopes of avoiding the big drop.

Yorkshire maintained their faint hopes of promotion from Division Two with a win at Derby, while Durham took 15 off the last over to pull off a unlikely victory over Sussex. The only game where even Messrs Duckworth and Lewis couldn't engineer a result was at Grace Road, were no play was possible after Somerset's innings.
