Former Warwickshire allrounder Graham Wagg has signed a one-year contract with Derbyshire. Wagg was banned for a year after testing positive for cocaine in September 2004, but his suspension ends in January.
"I am delighted to have signed for Derbyshire and been given the chance to get my career back on track," Wagg said. "I made a big mistake and admitted it straight away. I have taken my punishment and used the time to think long and hard about what I want to do with my life and my cricket career. I am determined to make the most of my second chance."
Wagg, 22, represented England throughout the age groups, culminating in his inclusion on the A tour to Malaysia and India in 2003-04. He has spent the last year coaching in South Africa and Holland.
Despite his ban, a number of counties are thought to have expressed an interest in signing him.
"Throughout our discussions Graham has been very honest about the mistake he made, something he regrets a great deal," Tom Sears, Derbyshire's chief executive, explained. "He has a real hunger and determination to get his career back on track and fulfill his potential. I am sure he has learnt a great deal from what he has been through and he deserves credit for the way he has conducted himself since the incident."
