A report in the Sunday Telegraph claims that England's hunt for a new chairman of selectors is not going as smoothly as hoped. An appointment is now unlikely to be made in time for the new man to leave with the England side when they head to New Zealand on January 26.

Interviews took place at Lord's this week but the delay suggests that the ECB has yet to find the right candidate. David Graveney, the current chairman, is on the short list as are Tim Boon, the Leicestershire coach, and Chris Adams, Sussex's captain. John Emburey has also been mentioned, but his chequered success as a coach might count against him.

The role has until now been part time, but the new post is full time with a salary of £80,000. The incumbent will travel on tours with the England side.

The salary is a stumbling block, so the paper reports. One of the favourites, former Derbyshire and England offspinner Geoff Miller, is understood to earn far more as an after-dinner speaker.

Graveney has made no secret of his desire to continue in the role but rumours have been circulating that he is not the favourite within the ECB and that the committee who will appoint the new man, headed by Hugh Morris, may have to take that into consideration.

Graveney received some timely support yesterday from Michael Vaughan and Paul Collingwood, Vaughan telling the Daily Mail that he enjoyed working with Graveney and that "he does a good job".

"This is an uncertain time for all the candidates, but it is heartening that both the Test and one-day captains have indicated they would be comfortable with the present arrangement continuing," Graveney responded. "It has been an honour to be chairman of selectors, a role I never considered to be part-time as I never stop thinking about it. My commitment is as sincere as ever and I would love to continue the work."
