Ravi Bopara has been named the Cricket Writers' Club Young Cricketer of the Year at their annual dinner in London.

He saw off competition from 2006 winner Stuart Broad, as well as Kent's Joe Denly and Hampshire's Liam Dawson.

Bopara, 23, made his Test debut for England in Sri Lanka last December and was recalled to the squad when Michael Vaughan quit as captain last month. In county cricket, he recorded Essex's first double hundred in one-day cricket, and only the eighth in history, in a Friends Provident Trophy quarter-final victory over Leicestershire at Grace Road.

Bopara, who was edged out in the voting last year by Yorkshire legspinner Adil Rashid, has won three Test caps and appeared in 28 one-day internationals. He has scored 1,046 runs and taken 25 wickets in 11 first-class matches this summer.
