Ravi Bopara, the Essex batsman, will return to cricket on Tuesday having been drafted into the England Lions squad to play Australia A at Old Trafford. He replaces James Taylor, who took Bopara's spot in the England side.

Bopara pulled out of the squad for the second Test against South Africa at Headingley for personal reasons. Taylor was called up in his place and made an impressive start, scoring a determined 34 and helping Kevin Pietersen add 147 for England's fifth wicket.

Bopara struggled on his return to the team in the first Test at The Oval. He made 0 and 22 before pulling out of the England squad and Essex's CB40 match against Worcestershire last Sunday.

England Lions and Australia A will contest two unofficial Tests, both played over four days. The second begins at Edgbaston on August 14, with the squad to be finalised once England's third Test squad is named. Eoin Morgan, another recent incumbent at No. 6 for England, will captain the side.

Huge blow for the Lions. Big gap in the middle order now, bigger than the one already filled with imports.

Feel sorry for Bopara. He probably has lost is position in the first string to JT. Personally, I feel Bopara had a rough deal. He is a much better player of Spin than the rest of English Team except for Cook. England will be touring India, they need Bopara there. He should play Third Test against SA and get his confidence.

@TeamSelector Apparently he had issues to sort with his partner and young child. If thats the case, its an understandable reason for pulling out and in my opinion, he should return for the 3rd Test if his problems are out of his head.

@TeamSelector - No. Personal reasons means that it is none of our business. Bopara has apparently moved on. Let's do the same.

Play him in place of JB please. Kieswetter to keep wicket.

Something is seriously wrong with Broad, his pace is way down and he is just not performing, Bresnan too to a lesser degree. Woakes is one for the future and won't be over looked for long. Really liked JT debut, it should of settled a few nerves, hope he gets an extended run.

Woakes is in and Taylor is playing in the Test side...

Woakes and Taylor should be in

Did anyone ever find out what those 'personal' reasons were ???

Any room for Woakes in that squad then? It's not so much the batting that needs bolstering; England's bowling is full of holes...
