Tony Greig, the former England captain, has been diagnosed with a form of lung cancer and will undergo a biopsy later this week to determine at what stage the disease is at and what the required course of action would be.

"I have had a few scrapes in my life and this is another one," Greig told the Sunday Telegraph. "[His wife] Vivian and I are going to put the boxing gloves on and fight this like we've never fought anything before."

Greig, who is currently a well-known television commentator, was initially diagnosed with bronchitis in May. His condition did not improve and tests following the World Twenty20 revealed that he has a lesion on his right lung. On his return to Australia from the tournament, he had "a lot of fluid" drained from the lung, and further testing revealed he had cancer.

Greig said he was unsure if he will be working over the Australian summer, as commentator, with Channel Nine: "At this stage, the summer is totally up in the air. My priority, 100%, is my family. They will come first."

Tony Greig alongside Ian Chappell and Geoff Boycott has been the guy worth listening to who appreciates the modern cricket. As a South African-born England all-rounder, he had five tough years 1972-77 and it was the distraction of Kerry Packer's World Series that finished him as a worthy all-rounder. His Test figures carry more weight compared to Ian Botham, who struggled to match his early spark and was a burden to English cricket after the 1986-87 winter. Best wishes and speedy recovery to Tony Greig for he excelled both as a cricketer and a commentator and would be welcomed all around the world for his enthusiastic tone.

afs_talyarkhan my experience similar except it was at Port of spain 1974 that this blonde giraffe along with a few others opened my eyes to cricket . like many of my peer group AWG was the personality of our cricketing infancy . Lack of Tv coverage overseas and later the packer affair meant that this fighting smiling freak of nature gladiator (who chris martin jenkins once wondered if his next move would be to walk on water ) is less revered than his exploits merited . the sadness i felt in reading this news is perhaps the realisation that the superhuman giant of my innocent years was simply a mere mortal .

Tony Greig, born in South Africa, went to England and captained it's National cricket team, now an Australian citizen and I know you are a staunch supporter of Sri Lankan cricket. This news comes to me with shock and disbelief, You are a popular person here in Sri Lanka and we pray for your speedy recovery from whatever ailment you are in. God bless you Tony Greig, we love you very much. A Sri Lankan Cricket fan and a big fan of the man himself Tony Greig.

Tony - I watched in awe as you cracked 100 at the Gabba, battling a dodgy wicket and the express fire crackers of Lillee & Thommo. You fought against the odds then and came out on top & I'm sure you will come out ahead in this fight too. All the best to you & your family and thank you for helping to change world cricket via your involvement with WSC in the 70s. Hang in there mate, don't let the mongrel get you...

Posted by afs_talyarkhan on (October 21, 2012, 18:32 GMT)

Tony I first became interested in cricket because of your exploits in India in 1972-3. You captured my imagination with the bravado of your batting, bowling and fielding and the obvious rapport you shared with the then test match loving crowds of India. I even supported England as a 10 year old in India because of you. Your exploits, and those of Keith Fletcher, on that tour cemented my love affair with cricket. I will never forget the way you cradled Gundappa Vishwanth in your arms after he made a hundred - after that you could do no wrong as far as the India crowds (myself included) were concerned. I would avidly wait for the paper boy to chuck the daily copy of "The Times of India" to the balcony of our fifth floor flat in Bombay to exult at your exploits against New Zealand, West Indies and Australia. You were also brash, aggressive, outspoken and unabashedly commercial but you were always yourself and, at the end of the day, a true sportsman and cricket lover. Speedy recovery!

Hi wish you will read this post, you are the one of the greatest and for me the greatest voice of the game alive i am not saying that your voice is great only, you and the rest of the channel nine test cricket commentators have changed my life long approach to the game. I cant explain by only listening to you guys how different i view the game i loved the most. My views and understanding of the game changed to a much more maturer level i am only 28 but my love for the longer version is crazy like hell and is only because of your team at channel 9. I love watching Australia play more than even my home team Pakistan. Its only because i heard you guys season after season and i loved listening to you people more than anything in cricket even. If its an ashes match or a world cup final if i can ear you guys comment on the game i would only switch the video off and listen to you all to fulfill my appetite for the game. get well soon and love you ****

All modern cricketers owe this man a debt for improving their rewards from the game. Agree with him or not he has immense passion for our beautiful game & brings lively commentary & debate to the table. This is horrible news & I hope his character will stand him in good stead to see this off, as cricket would be much poorer for his absence. All the best Tony in this fight & I know you'll face it head on. Hope you're in the commentary box for years to come.

Hello Tony

No need to give up - one wrong diagnosis. This sounds like COP* a recently discovered disease that resembles pneumonia/cancer and can be beaten with high doses of steroids tapering off after 6 months. * look this up - cryptogenic organising pneumonia.

I hope that you get the best treatment after your biopsy and and that the surgeon is brave enough to look at the alternatives. My right lung showed white on the X ray. My surgeon took five days to change his mind from inoperable lung cancer to cryptogenic organizing pneumonia * and I am pretty well now and am told that my ' COP' is in remission.

Thanks for all the wonderful enjoyment when you played in England and led our team!

The very best of LUCK.

This is Sad news, I've admired your courage and determination when you captained Sussex & England. Your straight talk, honesty and fair play are hallmark of a champion. 1. Your visionary "Spirit of Cricket lecture at Lord's" early this year was an eye opener. You bring charm and tenacity to the game of cricket, listening to your commentary is like reading the cricket encyclopedia . I will always remember you are the soldier who stood his ground in the 70's against the mighty West Indians. Get well soon mite.
