Matthew Fisher named in England U-19 squad

Matthew Fisher, the 15-year-old Yorkshire bowler who recently became the youngest player to feature in a competitive county match, has been included in the England Under-19 squad for the triangular series against Bangladesh and Pakistan next month.

Fisher, a medium-pacer, made his Yorkshire debut in the YB40 against Leicestershire in June and claimed 1 for 40. He has since played another 40-over match while also featuring regularly for the 2nd XI.

David Graveney, the ECB's national performance manager, who chairs the U-19 selection panel, said: "We welcome Matthew Fisher into the squad for the first time along with a number of other new players who have impressed in County second XI and first team cricket this summer. Matthew's selection reflects both the selectors' and Yorkshire's view that he is ready to step up to the challenge of playing international age-group cricket."

Yorkshire provide four other players in the 14-man squad - Karl Carver, Will Rhodes, Josh Shaw and Jonny Tattersall - while Northamptonshire's Ben Duckett will captain the side which is building towards next year's Under-19 World Cup in the UAE.

As with the England Lions, it was a disappointing 2012-13 overseas season for the U-19 side where they lost the one-day series against South Africa 5-0 although did share the Test matches 1-1.

Graveney said: "Ben Duckett has considerable experience at this level after playing in last year's U-19 World Cup and captaining England in the ODIs on their tour of South Africa earlier this year. He continues to develop as a player and has gained further valuable experience by playing for Northamptonshire's first team this summer.

"This tri-series will enable our best young players to test themselves against opposition who are well versed in both playing and bowling spin, and will also provide important preparation for the squad ahead of next winter's World Cup in the UAE."
