Sachin Tendulkar will captain a team representing Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) against a Shane Warne-led Rest of the World in an exhibition match to celebrate the bicentenary of Lord's in July. The 50-over match is one of a number of specially arranged events to mark 200 years since the first game played on the ground.

MCC's current president Mike Gatting will be the manager of the team that also includes former India captain Rahul Dravid. Warne will oversee the Rest of the World XI alongside Shaun Pollock in the fixture, which will take place on July 5.

"It is an honour to be asked to captain MCC in such a prestigious fixture, and I am delighted to accept," Tendulkar said. "Lord's is such a special place to play cricket and I am very much looking forward to helping celebrate its bicentenary by taking part in this match. I was delighted to be presented with an MCC Honorary Life Membership in 2010, and it will be a privilege to play at the home of cricket once again."

Warne, who retired from international cricket in 2007 but continued to turn out in the Big Bash League until 2013, said: "I always enjoy playing at Lord's and as an Honorary Life Member of MCC I'm really excited about coming back. I'm sure the match will be a lot of fun and it will be a pleasure to be part of the bicentenary celebrations of the most famous cricket ground in the world."

An MCC women's team, captained by Charlotte Edwards, will play a Rest of the World XI on May 19. Claire Taylor, the former England batsman and only woman to be named Wisden Cricketer of the Year, will select the Rest of the World team, the first time such a side has been assembled in the women's game.

The Bicentenary Festival Weekend will take place over July 20-22 and includes a repeat of the first-ever match at Lord's, between MCC and Hertfordshire in 1814, as well as traditional fixtures between Oxford and Cambridge, and Eton and Harrow.

@ BRUTALANALYST , Sachin and Lara played in a beneficiary match in Cananda way back in 92 . They smashed Wasim and Waquar and had a 200+ run partnership. Yes but seing them bat together will be awesome .

  • on February 10, 2014, 3:18 GMT

Did I see someone put Danny Morrison in his team, thats a joke!

  • BRUTALANALYST on February 9, 2014, 14:24 GMT

How amazing would it be to see Lara and Sachin batting together . . .

  • dunger.bob on February 8, 2014, 9:54 GMT

What about Kallis. Only recently retired too. I don't expect to see 10 overs from Warnie. He'll be knackered after 3 and struggling to hit the pitch. Sachin probably still sees them like a beach ball so he should be all right. A lot of the other guys already mentioned would seriously struggle in a 50 over game I'd think. .. I'm not talking about playing to win, I mean just getting through the game without tearing muscle off bone. .. anyway, sounds like fun. I hope to catch it on TV.

If I was selecting the teams, they would be (ignoring the fact some of them have been out of the game for a while)

ROW XI - Jayasuriya, Hayden, Ponting, Lara, Kallis, Gilchrist, Pollock, W Akram, Warne, McGrath, Donald

MCC XI - Trescothick, Sehwag, Dravid, Tendulkar, Chanderpaul, Flintoff, Lee, Kumble, W Younis, Gough, Murali

And while I'm indulging myself, my 'current' players XI would be - Smith, Gayle, Sangakkara, Clarke, Pietersen, de Villiers, Afridi, Philander, Johnson, Steyn, Ajmal

plenty of other players I would like to have squeezed in, but unfortunately only 11 places per side... that's cricket!!!!

agreed to Hussain Kurawadala ,today's players performs only in home tracks. Miss those days when McGreth used to come to India and beat Indian batsmen in dust bowls with his skill ,Lara hammering Murali in Sri Lanka or SRT taming Aussie and English fast bowlers in their own backyard.

    ROW xi should be- 1.Gilchrist 2.Hayden 3.Ponting 4.Lara 5.S.Waugh 6.Flintoff 7.Klusener 8.W.Akram 9.S.Warne 10.Ambrose 11.McGreth

Its better to see these legends who made sure that they won or at least fought in overseas tours than to see today's players and teams getting whitewashed

  • on February 6, 2014, 18:45 GMT

I think it would be great to see such legends from 1990 s and 2000s in one match !!!.Definitely better than today's players who are all kings at home and are whitewashed abroad

  • on February 6, 2014, 18:18 GMT

I think Murali will also play for the rest of the world. Boy! how about Warne & Murali bowling in tandem against little master and the wall? But unfortunately we have to wait 4 months for that :(

  • on February 6, 2014, 15:40 GMT

is it going to come on tv?

  • Harmony111 on February 6, 2014, 15:29 GMT

I can assure you this match will generate HUGE TRPs. Sachin's presence will be the major reason but many ppl will watch it cos Warne would also be there. These two are the two most iconic players of the last 20-25 years and among the greatest masters of their respective arts. We might even see Sachin bowling Warne-like Leg Breaks to Warne himself. That would be an awesome sight.

  • TestOfTime on February 6, 2014, 14:44 GMT
