Glamorgan were on top against Essex at Southend, thanks to a fine century by 23-year-old Michael Powell. Powell completed his hundred by tea in the County Championship Division Two match and went on to make 128 before he was finally dismissed by Peter Such at the score on 309. Powell hit 15 boundaries during the course of a patient 5-3/4 hour innings. The young Powell was awarded his county cap during the interval.
Joining Powell at 82 for 3, Mathew Maynard shared a partnership of 227 Powell for the fourth wicket. Maynard too made a century and was fifth out for 102 at the score of 312. Maynard had a slice of luck when on 10 he was dropped by wicketkeeper James Foster off medium-pacer Danny Law. Glamorgan finally ended the day at 360 for six, 68 runs ahead of Essex.
