He became the 237th player to make a Test appearance for West Indies.Adam Gilchrist captained Australia for the first time. He became the 41st player to captain Australia in a Test. He also became the 13th youngest player to captain Australia in a Test.Gilchrist became only the fourth wicket keeper to lead Australia after Jack Blackham (8), Barry Jarman (1) and Bill Murdoch (1) and the 20th wicketkeeper in Test annals to take on both jobs.Brian Lara, on 167, in first innings, completed his 6000 runs in Test cricket in his 73rd Test and 126th innings. He became the 30th batsman in Test annals and seventh West Indian to do so. Others to do so for West Indies are Viv Richards (8540 in 121 Tests), Gary Sobers (8032 in 93), Gordon Greenidge (7558 in 108), Clive Lloyd (7515 in 110), Desmond Haynes (7487 in 116) and Rohan Kanhai (6227 in 79). Lara is the second quickest for West Indies in terms of least matches and innings taken to accomplish this feat behind Gary Sobers who took 65 Tests and 111 innings to do so. The Test record is held by Don Bradman. Bradman completed his 6000 runs in his only 45th Test and 68th innings.Lara also completed his 15000 runs in first class cricket in 313 innings during his three figure knock.Lara's innings (182) is the highest by a West Indian in an overseas Test since Sydney Test against Australia in 1992-93. Lara himself had made 277 in that Test.Lara's innings is the highest for West Indies for a losing cause. The previous highest was Clive Lloyd's 178 also against Australia at Georgetown in 1972-73. The 156 run-partnership between Mike Slater and Matthew Hayden is Australia's second best for the opening wicket against West Indies in Australia after the 172 run (unbroken) stand between Archie Jackson and Bill Ponsford also at Adelaide in 1930-31.Mark Waugh, when reached 39 in first innings, completed 4000 runs in 'won' matches. He became the third Australian and sixth batsman to do so. Incidentally Don Bradman with 4813 runs in 30 Tests heads the table of batsmen with most runs in matches won by their respective sides.Courtney Walsh and Nixon McLean each bagged a pair of spectacles in the match. Walsh, infact, narrowly missed the ignominy of bagging a 'King Pair' (first ball dismissal in both innings) when he managed to stay at the crease for two balls after being out off the first in the first innings. Incidentally it was his third consecutive duck.It was only the third time that two West Indian batsmen bagged a pair each in same Test. Everton Weekes and Garry Alexander (against England at The Oval in 1957) and Ramnaresh Sarwan and Mervyn Dillon (against Australia at Brisbane in November this year) are the others to do so for West Indies.Walsh has now bagged a pair on three occasions. He thus equalled Curtly Ambrose's record of most pair for West Indies.The duck in the second innings was Walsh's fourth duck in six innings in the series. He now shares the record of most ducks for West Indies alongwith Sonny Ramadhin (v England in 1957), Joel Garner (v Pakistan in 1976-77) and Ian Bishop (v Australia in 1996-97).Brian Lara top scored in both innings of the Test. He provided the 19th such instance by a West Indian - fifth against Australia.Lara has now top scored in both innings of a Test on four occasions - most by a West Indian. He was earlier at level with Gary Sobers, Desmond Haynes and Viv Richards with three such instances. Lara is now behind India's Sunil Gavaskar and Zimbabwean Andy Flower's Test record of twice top scoring in a Test on most occasions. Gavaskar and Flower have achieved this distinction on five separate occasions for India and Zimbabwe respectively. Lara is now at level with two Englishmen David Gower and Mike Atherton.Lara, has now aggregated 1004 runs in 13 matches against Australia in Australia. He became the fifth West Indian after Viv Richards (1760 in 22), Clive Lloyd (1616 in 20), Desmond Haynes (1171 in 21) and Richie Richardson (1144 in 15) and 20th batsman to do so.Colin Miller (10-113) became the 42nd Australian to capture 10 wickets in a match. He also provided the 80th such occasion by an Australian.Glenn McGrath has now taken 90 wickets in 16 Tests against West Indies which makes him the bowler with most wickets against West Indies. McGrath surpassed India's Kapil Dev's tally of 89 wickets (from 25 Tests).Courtney Walsh has now taken 131 wickets in 36 Tests against Australia, which takes him past the tally of New Zealander Richard Hadlee (130 in 23) and former compatriot Curtly Ambrose (128 in 27). Only Englishman Ian Botham with 148 wickets in 36 Tests is ahead of Walsh.Gilchrist became the 17th Australian to win a Test on captaincy debut.Australia has now improved upon its own record of winning most consecutive Tests making it 13 out of 13.The victory was Australia's 10th in as many matches at home. This equals the record of most consecutive Test wins in home matches. India (from 1988-89 to 1994-95) and South Africa (from 1997-98 to 1999-00) had won 10 matches on a trot.West Indies has now lost 16 Tests out of last 18 it has played overseas.
