The England Board XI today begins its campaign to try to win the European Championships, which this year are being played in Scotland. Alongside England, whose Board XI represents the highest achievement for an amateur cricketer in this country, the competition features Denmark, Ireland, Scotland, Italy and Holland, the reigning champions.
The England squad features five changes to the one which competed in the Triple Crown event in Wales at the beginning July. The squad is as follows:
Carl Amos Norfolk
Paul Bryson Cheshire
Steve Foster (Capt) Northumberland
Richard Howitt Lincolnshire
Chris Boroughs Herefordshire
Richard Halsall Sussex
Stuart Stoneman Cheshire
Chris Hall Cheshire
Chris Mole (wk) Sussex
Ian Parkin Derbyshire
David Pennett Cumbria
John Carruthers Yorkshire
Marcus Sharp Cumbria
Andy Pick (Coach)
The round-robin format sees each country play each other once in 50 overs-a-side games played to ICC regulations. The winner of each match receives two points and one point is awarded for a tie or no result. The country with the most points will be crowned European Champions. If two teams finish with equal points, the tournament winner is decided by the result of the game between those two teams.
