Lewis Gregory, a seam bowling allrounder from Plymouth with an ability to swing the ball, arguably lacks the pace required to make the grade as an international allrounder, but he has developed into a useful member of Somerset's side in all formats. He came closest at the start of the 2015 season, as one of the lesser known names in England's weakened squad to face Ireland in Dublin - Peter Moores' last game in charge as coach - but the selectors have yet to look in his direction again.
Gregory's Somerset debut came against Pakistan in 2010 and he played most of the Clydesdale Bank 40 campaign the following season, taking 13 wickets at just 14.92. In 2011 he also made his first-class debut, against Worcestershire at Taunton, but he failed to kick on in 2012, although he did play a full part in the CB40 and took four wickets in the FLt20 quarter-final against Essex. 2013 saw him play six first-class matches, returning a career-best 5 for 38 against Middlesex at Lord's.
Gregory finished the 2014 season as one of the most improved players in county cricket. While his talent had never been in doubt - Gregory developed through the Devon age-group teams (primarily as a batsman) and is a former captain of England U19 - in 2014 he started to produce consistently impressive performances with the ball. Despite injury limiting him to nine Championship games, he claimed 43 wickets at 26.06 apiece as well as averaging a fraction below 30 with the bat. Highlights included an 11-wicket match against Northants and slamming a 70-ball century against Durham in a List A game.
After Gregory's trip to Ireland, England showed signs of interest at the end of 2015 by selecting him for an England Lions T20 series against Pakistan in Dubai only for him to have to withdraw because of a back injury.
