Matthew Hoggard, the England fast bowler, will miss the second Test against India starting on July 27 at Trent Bridge as he is still recovering from a back injury. Hoggard didn't play the series opener at Lord's after suffering from back spasms. The squad for the second Test remains unchanged.
"We did not consider Matthew Hoggard for this [second] Test match on cricketing grounds," said David Graveney, England's chairman of selectors. "He is making progress in his recovery from a back injury and came through a preliminary fitness test at the ECB National Cricket Centre today [Monday].
Graveney said Hoggard will be reassessed on Tuesday and indicated that no decision had been made if he will be available for domestic cricket.
The inexperienced English bowling attack of James Anderson, Ryan Sidebottom and Chris Tremlett was praised by Graveney. "There were many positive aspects to our performance in the first Test and we were particularly impressed by the efforts of our inexperienced bowling attack against high-quality opposition.
"They bowled well as a unit and the challenge now will be for them to maintain the same levels of consistency at Nottingham."
England though were unlucky not to take a lead in the series, with rain denying them a chance to wrap up India's second innings after they were nine down.
England squad: Michael Vaughan (capt), Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell, Matt Prior (wk), Ryan Sidebottom, Chris Tremlett, Monty Panesar, James Anderson, Stuart Broad.
