NatWest Series [India in England] - 7th ODI

England v India

England won by 7 wickets (with 82 balls remaining)

Welcome to the big day: the final at Lord's. England v India. There is bit of cloud cover around and Ravi Shastri believes it would be a good toss to lose.

Toss: Rahul Dravid has chosen to bat. "We got a couple of spinners, hopefully the pitch will help them later on," Dravid said after at the toss.

Stat: England has played 35 ODIs at Lord's so far and have been victorious in 17 of them. 16 were lost, one was tied and there was no result in the other.

India too possess a good record at Lord's. They have won four of five games that they have played here, the only blip being the inaugural match of the 1975 World Cup. For more stats, click here.

Team changes Andrew Flintoff replaces Alastair Cook while, for India, R P Singh comes in for Ajit Agarkar.

Nagraj Gollapudi, the assistant editor of Cricinfo magazine, is at the ground and is acting as if he were Hercule Poirot. Some time back, Atherton and Holding were exchanging betting notes. Nagraj hears a mention of hypotenuse. No, Athers and Mikey have not become mathematicians, we believe its a name of a horse.

Jenny Thompson too is at the ground. "Good day for the touts at Lord's. It's unbelievable - you couldn't move for them. They've quoted my colleagues and I everything from £300 to £500 - a ticket. Next stop for them will be up the road to Wembley, for England v Israel in the football: where tickets are going for face value. Then to Twickenham for The Police concert. Martin's brother bought a face-value ticket for the concert - but it was still £250. It's all going on in London today."

"But, of course, the best place to be is Lord's - although we would say that... though, walking towards the ground you could be forgiven you were in central Mumbai as a sea of light blue shirts - with millions of Tendulkars bobbing up and down - engulfed the occasional English shirt. Everyone is so up for it, it's great. Then, walking in to the ground itself was like being transported back in time: there's a Beatles tribute band out in full force. Expect plenty of fab fours and swinging sixes (that nearly works) out there today.

It's chilly today, but not too cold for swing... yet, the Kookaburra hasn't been swinging that much this season.

Martin Williamson - yes, he is also at the ground - spotted Andrew Flintoff striding to the nets earlier, a bit glum (that's Flintoff, not Martin who's always cheerful). Flintoff was batting - but not spotted bowling.

0.1

Anderson to Ganguly, no run, What a start! A screaming bouncer that almost had Ganguly. It leapt up at his throat, Ganguly took his eyes off the ball and fended it in an ungainly manner. The ball popped up, hung in the air for a while before dropping behind the stumps. The slips came rushing, the bowler charged after it but it landed safely

0.2

Anderson to Ganguly, no run, short in length, around the off stump, Ganguly eases it to the cover region

0.3

Anderson to Ganguly, 1 run, First runs of the day. On the hips, tucked away behind square leg for a single

0.4

Anderson to Tendulkar, 2 runs, full, straight, on the middle, Tendulkar goes right across to wrist it away past square leg

Siddhartha is also at the ground... but he hasn't quite woken up yet after a big night at last night's Cricket Writers' Club dinner, where Adil Rashid won the Young Player of the Year

Two slips, a gully, point, very wide and deep third man, cover, mid-on, midwicket and a very wide long leg.

0.5

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, Full and fast, just outside the off stump, Tendulkar covers the off stump before shouldering arms

0.6

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, slightly short in length, in the zone outside the off stump, left alone

Jenny points out that there are "plenty of empty seats still as people gradually make their way in." btw.. I am Sriram Veera and will be joined by Jamie Alter in a while.

End of over 1 (3 runs) India 3/0 (RR: 3.00)

SC Ganguly    1* (3b)

1.1

Broad to Ganguly, no run, Full and wide, Ganguly goes after it, gets a inside edge past the stumps. The two had a bit of go at each other at The Oval.

1.2

Broad to Ganguly, no run, Full in length ,angling away from Ganguly who punches it on the up to left of backward point but Ian Bell dives to make a very good stop

1.3

Broad to Ganguly, 1 run, short in length, on the middle stump line, Ganguly jabs at it, another inside edge, and the ball runs off to the short fine leg region

1.4

Broad to Tendulkar, no run, full-pitched, on the off stump, Tendulkar stays back, and pushes it to point

1.5

Broad to Tendulkar, no run, on the middle and leg, not much movement, tickled to square leg.

There has not been much movement so far.

1.6

Broad to Tendulkar, 2 runs, Full-pitched again but this time it drifts on to the leg and middle region and Tendulkar flicks it past square leg

End of over 2 (3 runs) India 6/0 (RR: 3.00)
SR Tendulkar    4* (6b)      SCJ Broad    1-0-3-0
SC Ganguly    2* (6b)      JM Anderson    1-0-3-0

Tendulkar changes his gloves. Agarkar is the 12 th man. RP Singh has replaced him in the playing XI

2.1

Anderson to Ganguly, no run, Hello?! Ganguly seems rather edgy today. It was short in length, only slightly mind you, on the middle stump line and he went for a rather ambitious pull and missed it completely. The ball rammed into the thigh pad

2.2

Anderson to Ganguly, no run

2.3

Anderson to Ganguly, no run, Ouch. Ganguly is hit on the helmet. A sharp bouncer and Ganguly went for a pull but was beaten by the pace. The ball hits him on the side of the left temple. The helmet is off and he is in pain. Anderson is gunning for Ganguly today.

2.4

Anderson to Ganguly, no run, another one that climbs up nastily, this time, on the middle and leg line, Ganguly is about to duck, spots that the ball is chest-high and just stabs it away at the last minute.

2.5

Anderson to Ganguly, 1 run, Another bouncer, at the right shoulder, Ganguly pulls, gets a top edge and it balloons over square leg.

2.6

Anderson to Tendulkar, 2 runs, fullish, on the off stump line, Tendulkar leans forward to ease it through covers

End of over 3 (3 runs) India 9/0 (RR: 3.00)
SR Tendulkar    6* (7b)      JM Anderson    2-0-6-0
SC Ganguly    3* (11b)      SCJ Broad    1-0-3-0

3.1

Broad to Ganguly, no run, full and outside off, pushed to cover

It has been a frenetic start. There has been not much movement but the bowlers have managed to extract some bounce. Ganguly has looked rather edgy as if he wants to get off to real aggressive start and has ended up playing a few mistimed shots. Anderson has troubled him with the bouncer

3.2

Broad to Ganguly, FOUR, Full, on a length, on the stumps but Ganguly, as he does in ODIs, backs away to the leg side and knifed it on the up over extra cover

3.3

Broad to Ganguly, FOUR, Oh... he drifts down the leg side and Ganguly tickles it fine. Very fine. Four more. India on the go here.

3.4

Broad to Ganguly, no run

3.5

Broad to Ganguly, no run, beaten. It landed on a length, outside the off stump and went away, Ganguly didn't move his feet and had a wild waft at it.

3.6

Broad to Ganguly, no run, And again. Again the feet were struck adhesively to the crease - Fevicol should consider signing him up - and he had a wild flash. Jokes apart, Ganguly has been in pretty good form in the series. He has timed the ball rather well, only today, he is going too hard at them.

England scramble round to their places ready for the next over

End of over 4 (8 runs) India 17/0 (RR: 4.25)
SC Ganguly    11* (17b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    2-0-11-0
SR Tendulkar    6* (7b)      JM Anderson    2-0-6-0

4.1

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, lands on a length, around the middle stump line, shapes in and evades the intended clip shot to the leg side and thuds into the thigh pad

4.2

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, fuller, on the off stump line, driven to mid-off

There is a very square point in place for Tendulkar.

4.3

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, on the middle and leg line, on a length, worked to square leg

4.4

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, short in length, outside the off stump, Tendulkar goes back and across, puts his bat out, away from the body, gets an inside-edge onto his pads.

4.5

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, again a touch short in length, outside the off stump, Tendulkar pushes it towards point

4.6

Anderson to Tendulkar, FOUR, Tendulkar breaks free with a pull shot. He swiveled nicely on the front foot to pull a bouncer to the long leg region. One bounce and over the ropes.

End of over 5 (4 runs) India 21/0 (RR: 4.20)
SR Tendulkar    10* (13b 1x4)      JM Anderson    3-0-10-0
SC Ganguly    11* (17b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    2-0-11-0

5.1

Broad to Ganguly, 1 run, tip and run. Ganguly leans forward to a length delivery and taps it gently to the off side and off they rush across for a quick single

5.2

Broad to Tendulkar, no run, climbs up from short of length, outside the off stump, Tendulkar stands tall to get on top of it and jabs it away to the off side

5.3

Broad to Tendulkar, 1 run, similar delivery and Tendulkar tries to upper cut it away and adjusts to place it to the point region

5.4

Broad to Ganguly, 2 runs, Another bouncer and Ganguly is in trouble again. Another weak pull shot, another edge - this time a top edge- and it flies over the 'keeper's head

5.5

Broad to Ganguly, no run

5.6

Broad to Ganguly, 1 run, Ganguly is having a lucky day. He should have tried his luck with betting on the horses. Another short one, over the middle stump, Ganguly backs away to the leg side, tries to upper cut it over the off side but only manages to lob it over backward point and some how, it lands safely

Cricinfo's wags are suggesting that Ganguly's batting suggests he thinks the Twenty20 has already started... and he's not even in the team.

End of over 6 (5 runs) India 26/0 (RR: 4.33)
SC Ganguly    15* (21b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    3-0-16-0
SR Tendulkar    11* (15b 1x4)      JM Anderson    3-0-10-0

6.1

Anderson to Ganguly, OUT, His luck runs out finally. Full in length, slanting away from him and he had a lame poke at it with an open-face of the bat and it went low to the second slip.

SC Ganguly c Flintoff b Anderson 15 (30m 22b 2x4 0x6) SR: 68.18

Gambhir is the new man in. Jenny chirps: "Sounded like "Gautam Gambia" when he was announced..."

6.2

Anderson to Gambhir, no run, in the zone outside the off stump, left alone

6.3

Anderson to Gambhir, 1 run, gets off the mark with a dab to third man

6.4

Anderson to Tendulkar, 2 runs, almost caught and bowled. Full-pitched, on the middle stump line, Tendulkar goes back, rather than forward, tries to wrist it away and ends up scooping it uppishly to the right of Anderson who can't reach it

6.5

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, beaten. Full and outside the off stump, Tendulkar goes down on his knee and tries to dispose it through the off side field. No contact though.

6.6

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, short in length, just outside the off stump, Tendulkar goes back and across, gets on top of the bounce and pushes it away to the off side.

End of over 7 (3 runs) India 29/1 (RR: 4.14)
SR Tendulkar    13* (18b 1x4)      JM Anderson    4-0-13-1
G Gambhir    1* (2b)      SCJ Broad    3-0-16-0

Jenny informs me that it's just been confirmed by the ICC that Anderson can indeed replace the injured Bopara in the Twenty20 in South Africa. Meanwhile, at the Lord's, the sun has poked through. India won't mind.

7.1

Broad to Gambhir, no run, Full in length, angling away from Gambhir who lets it go through to the 'keeper

7.2

Broad to Gambhir, no run, again a touch of extra bounce, outside the off stump, Gambhir tries to cut it but the ball bounces over the blade

7.3

Broad to Gambhir, 5 runs, Almost a run out. On the middle and leg, pushed to the on side, after a little hesitation he sets off for a single. Broad is quickly across, picks up and fires in a throw at the non-striker's end but misses. Gambhir would have been a goner had it hit. Instead, he gets four overthrows. Tendulkar called him over and Gambhir responded. Risky.

7.4

Broad to Tendulkar, 1 run, on a length, around the off stump, pushed to extra cover

7.5

Broad to Gambhir, no run

7.6

Broad to Gambhir, no run, full in length, slanting away from Gambhir who shoulders arms

End of over 8 (6 runs) India 35/1 (RR: 4.37)
G Gambhir    6* (7b)      SCJ Broad    4-0-22-0
SR Tendulkar    14* (19b 1x4)      JM Anderson    4-0-13-1

8.1

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, fullish, just outside the off stump, Tendulkar is rooted to the back foot - the length demanded he come forward but the extra bounce on this track is making him go back to nearly every ball - mistimes a drive to the leg side. He wanted to thrash it through the off

8.2

Anderson to Tendulkar, 1 run, on the middle, Tendulkar goes back and across to clip it to square leg

The all new fantasy league is here. Click here to play. Don't be shy, its free.

8.3

Anderson to Gambhir, no run, on the middle and off, defended to the off side

8.4

Anderson to Gambhir, 1 run, full in length, Gambhir is a touch late in moving forward and mistimes a cover drive.

8.5

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, short in length, outside the off stump, shapes in, Tendulkar shuffles across to defend but is beaten by the incoming delviery and the ball bounds off the flap of the pad to Prior. They appeal for a catch. It's not Christmas yet.

8.6

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run

End of over 9 (2 runs) India 37/1 (RR: 4.11)

9.2

Broad to Gambhir, no run, bouncer, on the off stump line, Gambhir drops his wrists, gets the bat off the line and sways away

9.3

Broad to Gambhir, no run, another bouncer, on the off stump line, Gambhir goes for a pull shot but can't connect

9.4

Broad to Gambhir, 1 run

9.5

Broad to Tendulkar, no run, short in length, outside the off stump line, slapped to point. Powerfully cut but straight to the fielder

9.6

Broad to Tendulkar, no run, short in length, pushed to cover

Over to Jamie Alter.

Thanks, Sriram. Hi, all.

10.1

Anderson to Gambhir, 2 runs, back of a length outside leg stump and he tucks that down to Monty at deep fine

10.2

Anderson to Gambhir, no run, back of a length, angled across off and he watchfully leaves well enough alone

10.3

Anderson to Gambhir, no run, this time its a touch fuller and Gambhir quickly pushes off the front foot, but finds the man at cover

10.4

Anderson to Gambhir, 1 run, good length, going across Gambhir, who hustles to jab the bat down on it as it passes and picks the gap backward of gully

10.5

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, full delivery, off stumpish, pushed back down the track

10.6

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, back of a length, good lift and carry as for the 'keeper as it swings in sharply, but Tendulkar's been around for some time and knows where his off stump is, leaving comfortably

Flintoff's just walked over vaguely near first slip and scratched out some run-up marks. Watch out for him at the Nursery End soon.

End of over 11 (3 runs) India 41/1 (RR: 3.72)

Well, whatdya know - here he is, around the stumps

11.1

Flintoff to Gambhir, 1 run, bangs it in short and Gambhir slaps it away for one backward of square, that ball was clocked at 87mph

11.2

Flintoff to Tendulkar, no run, good placement, getting it to kick off a good length and Tendulkar hops up in defence

11.3

Flintoff to Tendulkar, no run, back of a length, angling into Tendulkar, who hops and goes for the cute little shuffle-and-flick but the ball catches him high on the knee roll, a muted appeal from big Freddie

11.4

Flintoff to Tendulkar, FOUR, there we go! Tendulkar backs away to leg and slaps Flintoff' short delivery up and over backward square for four, wasnt in complete control of that shot

11.5

Flintoff to Tendulkar, FOUR, and again! Tendulkar makes room and goes just over cover's head, deciding to go for Flintoff's short-pitched stuff and picks up four more

Fielder got a hand to it, wouldve been a stunning catch

11.6

Flintoff to Tendulkar, 1 run, and this time he makes room to late-cut but the ball hurries onto him and he makes a mess of the attempted shot, the ball sneaking back past leg stump, edgy stuff here

End of over 12 (10 runs) India 51/1 (RR: 4.25)
SR Tendulkar    24* (32b 3x4)      A Flintoff    1-0-10-0

12.2

Anderson to Tendulkar, 1 run, back of a length, hops up and gently places it wide of Collingwood this time for one down towards third man

12.3

Anderson to Gambhir, no run, length ball on about leg stump, going away and Gambhir hurries to tap it to point, 'NO' is the call

12.4

Anderson to Gambhir, OUT, oh superb catch from Wright! Gambhir swivels uneasily, latching onto a short of a length delivery just outside off stump, the ball comes off the bottom of the bat and flies low and fast to Wright at square leg, who times his dive forward brilliantly and plucks it inches off the ground!

G Gambhir c Wright b Anderson 12 (30m 20b 0x4 0x6) SR: 60.00

Wicket for Anderson and the choice to send Gambhir at No.3 doesnt work for India. Here's Rahul Dravid, ahead of Yuvraj Singh.

12.5

Anderson to Dravid, no run, good length well outside off stump, he leaves along easily

12.6

Anderson to Dravid, no run, back of a length outside off, Dravid shoulders arms and thats the end of a successful over for Anderson

13.1

Flintoff to Tendulkar, no run, short delivery going down leg sharply, forcing Tendulkar up and he mistimes his attempted nudge as the ball hurries onto him, popping up off the pad for a second and dropping on the pitch

13.2

Flintoff to Tendulkar, 1 run, back of a length again, he hops up and taps it towards point

Flintoff operating with a short of a length method here

13.3

Flintoff to Dravid, OUT, and it works! That ball was quick, pitching back of a length outside off stump and jagging in, Dravid hops up and tries to drop the bat out of harms way but theres a noise as ball passes him, it deviates sharply and Prior collects moving to his left, they all go up in appeal and Aleem Dar nods his head and raises the finger! Dravid isnt happy at all, the ball bounced well and he seems to say the bat flicked his pad...

R Dravid c †Prior b Flintoff 0 (5m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Boos and more boos ring out after replays on the big screen. Looks like bat did hit the pad. Dravid is not happy.

13.4

Flintoff to Yuvraj Singh, no run, and hes welcomed with a short-pitched delivery that kicks up sharply and has him hopping

13.5

Excellent bolwing from Flintoff

14.5

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, short and wide, he cracks it hard but on the bounce to the man at cover

14.6

Anderson to Tendulkar, no run, full this time, Tendulkar gets well forward and defends to cover

Another fine over from Anderson as England have rocked India in the last 15 minutes or so

Flintoff to Tendulkar, 1 no ball, good length on middle and off, turned to midwicket

15.2

Flintoff to Tendulkar, no run, sharp delivery on off stump, Tendulkar gets up quickly and does well to turn that into the ground in front of square leg, he wants one but Yuvraj loudly turns down the run

15.3

Flintoff to Tendulkar, FOUR, streaky! Flintoff pitches it up, Tendulkar waits for movement but there isnt any and the ball takes the thick outside edge and screams away down to third man

15.4

Flintoff to Tendulkar, OUT, gone, but how! Flintoff pitches full again, outside off stump, Tendulkar drives loosely, bat misses ball completely, instead the bat clips the pad as he goes through with the shot, they appeal for the catch from Prior and Aleem Dar pulls off a shocking dismissal! Wow, there was no bat on ball whatsoever and Tendulkar is livid. Another bad dismissal in this long summer of competitive cricket.

15.5

Flintoff to Uthappa, no run, back of a length down leg stump, he shuffles and plays it down

15.6

MS Dhoni c Anderson b Flintoff 50 (98m 72b 4x4 1x6) SR: 69.44

Flintoff gets a third, on return to the side, to dismiss India's top-scorer by some margin. India won the toss and failed to put up much of a fight - notice they didnt even play out their 50 overs - and find themselves defending just 187. England will be confident of knocking this off. Packed house at Lord's.

Do join me, Jamie Alter, and Sriram Veera for England's chase in a while.
