India in Scotland ODI Match

Scotland v India

India won by 7 wickets (with 37 balls remaining) (D/L method)

Right, a very loud tannoy drowns out all other noise as we get ready to start ... Fraser Watts to face the first ball ...

10.30am Siddhartha reports that there's a crowd of about 200 in the ground, and announcements are being made in English, Hindi and Punjabi. After disappointing World Cup campaigns this match represents a fresh start for both teams in one-day cricket, as the BBC's Jonathan Agnew is quick to remind Dravid.

Scotland 1 Fraser Watts, 2 Navdeep Poonia, 3 Ryan Watson (capt), 4 Gavin Hamilton, 5 Colin Smith, 6 Neil McCallum, 7 Craig Wright, 8 Majid Haq, 9 John Blain, 10 Paul Hoffmann, 11 Dewald Nel.

India 1 Robin Uthappa, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Rahul Dravid (capt), 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Dinesh Karthik, 6 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), 7 Piyush Chawla, 8 Ajit Agarkar, 9 Ramesh Powar, 10 RP Singh, 11 Munaf Patel.

10.15am India win the toss and bowl. Rahul Dravid says that the decision was influenced by the rain and the dampness in the wicket. Team news will follow as and when we get it. Sid adds that the sun is just starting to make an appearance. Happiness and rapture.

10.00am Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live ball-by-ball commentary of India's one-off ODI against Scotland in Glasgow. The Test series is done and dusted and now it's time to turn once again to coloured clothing. Seven one-day matches against England await next week, but for now it's a more peaceful outing for Rahul Dravid's men, and a chance to give an opportunity to one or two of the fringe members of the side.

The Scottish weather, however, hasn't been too kind to its cricketers in recent years. Their ODI against Pakistan in July was abandoned without a ball being bowled, as was their game against Australia in 2005. And the clouds are lurking menacingly today as well. Our man on the ground, Siddhartha Vaidayanathan, reports that there has been overnight rain and the sun hasn't yet broken through this morning. But let's wait and see. What could possibly go wrong?

For Dravid, of course, the match is a chance to return to some familiar old haunts. He was Scotland's overseas star in 2003, and made a lasting impression with 600 runs at 66.66 in 11 matches.

0.1

Agarkar to Watts, 1 wide, very gentle loosener, outside the off stump and it got wider

0.1

Agarkar to Watts, 1 wide, way down the leg side and India are up and running with a wide

0.1

Agarkar to Watts, no run, again outside off stump, left alone and the ball bounced twice before it reached Dhoni

The keeper will need to take a step or two closer ... or even to come up to the stumps

0.1

Agarkar to Watts, no run, that's better, brings Uthappa onto the front foot and he plays to mid-off

0.2

Agarkar to Watts, no run, fuller and straighter, a checked drive to mid-off

A massively disappointing crowd ... in the low hundreds

0.3

Agarkar to Watts, 1 wide, another very wide one, swinging away towards the slips as well which only served to make it look even worse

0.3

Agarkar to Watts, no run, that one just about stayed within the limits, Dhoni again forced to crouch to take it around his ankles

0.4

Agarkar to Watts, 1 wide, shorter, so it carried through to Dhoni at chest height, but very wide

This is going to be a long over ...

0.4

Agarkar to Watts, no run, much better, straighter, Watts plays and misses as the ball leaves him

0.5

Agarkar to Watts, no run, swinging away, too wide to start with, Watts forward and offers no shot

0.6

Agarkar to Watts, no run, Watts leaves that one as well ... he only had to play at two of the nine deliveries ...

"That's over chaps," calls the umpire ... and after one over it's back to Andrew Miller who had some urgent - and brief - business to attend to.

End of over 1 (3 runs) Scotland 3/0 (RR: 3.00)
DF Watts    0* (6b)      AB Agarkar    1-0-3-0
NS Poonia    0* (0b)

Thanks Martin. Wretched credit card company chose the perfect time to call

1.1

Singh to Poonia, no run, full and straight, a hint of inswing. Decent start

1.2

Singh to Poonia, 1 run, full again but slightly wider, and that's shovelled with not much timing into the covers

1.3

Singh to Watts, no run, lovely line, tight and straight. Good leave outside off

1.4

Singh to Watts, no run, typical Singh double-whammy - the last one swung in, this one fizzed across. Watts was well beaten

1.5

Singh to Watts, 1 run, a fraction shorter but straight and swinging in. Defended off the back foot

1.6

Singh to Poonia, no run, good finish to the cover, booming across the right-hander, who flinches outside off

Tough conditions for the batsmen, and the fielders too. Dravid has just called for a third sweater ...

End of over 2 (2 runs) Scotland 5/0 (RR: 2.50)
NS Poonia    1* (3b)      RP Singh    1-0-2-0
DF Watts    1* (9b)      AB Agarkar    1-0-3-0

2.1

Agarkar to Watts, no run, measured pace, a fraction too wide of off stump, left well alone

2.2

Agarkar to Watts, no run, wide again, and swinging away

One of the chilliest looking supporters stands arms crossed in the stands in her Scotland shirt

2.3

Agarkar to Watts, no run, outside off again, a hint of away movement

2.4

Agarkar to Watts, 1 run, fuller length, and squirted safely down to third man. Watts doubles his tally

2.5

Agarkar to Poonia, no run, full length, tight to off stump, defended solidly out to cover

2.6

Agarkar to Poonia, no run, beaten by a good ball outside off, although it was a slightly iffy half-drive, half-defensive shot from Poonia

Here's another fan. Ginger hair, tartan tamoshanter ... and an Indian flag around the shoulders ...

End of over 3 (1 run) Scotland 6/0 (RR: 2.00)
NS Poonia    1* (5b)      AB Agarkar    2-0-4-0
DF Watts    2* (13b)      RP Singh    1-0-2-0

3.1

Singh to Watts, 2 runs, low full toss, and Watts misses out on a gimme. Picks up a couple with a mistimed drive

3.2

Singh to Watts, no run, a loud appeal as Watts flings himself into a drive, but nothing doing from umpire Howell.

3.3

Singh to Watts, no run, wide outside off again, Watts isn't tempted this time

3.4

Singh to Watts, no run, outside off again, left alone again. Plenty movement again, but a little misdirected at present

3.5

Singh to Watts, no run, that's a better ball, fuller length, tighter line. It's there for the drive but somehow isn't ...

3.6

Singh to Watts, no run, left alone again. Watts is playing with a lot of caution, and the occasional expansive intent

End of over 4 (2 runs) Scotland 8/0 (RR: 2.00)
DF Watts    4* (19b)      RP Singh    2-0-4-0
NS Poonia    1* (5b)      AB Agarkar    2-0-4-0

4.1

Agarkar to Poonia, 1 wide, a bouncer that's more of a fizzer. Hardly gets up and slips down the leg side too

4.1

Agarkar to Poonia, no run, fuller length and swinging from the hand. A very loose waft from Poonia who plays outside the line

4.2

Agarkar to Poonia, OUT, nailed with the straight one. Well, that was the wicket that had been threatening. It's the first ball that would have hit the stumps, and was delivered from wide of the crease, landed on a good length, and Poonia was stone-dead in front of middle as he attempted to clip through the leg side

NS Poonia lbw b Agarkar 1 (19m 7b 0x4 0x6) SR: 14.28

4.3

Agarkar to Watson, no run, Watson's first delivery starts outside off and swings away again. A nice sighter

4.4

Agarkar to Watson, no run, better from Agarkar, starts on middle and off and swings away. Defended watchfully off the back foot

4.5

Agarkar to Watson, 3 runs, good shot from Watson, nicely timed through the leg side, although the outfield is very sluggish and Ramesh Powar pulls it up inside the midwicket boundary

4.6

Agarkar to Watts, no run, end of a successful over. Scotland are being made to struggle in this conditions

End of over 5 (4 runs) Scotland 12/1 (RR: 2.40)
DF Watts    4* (20b)      AB Agarkar    3-0-8-1
RR Watson    3* (3b)      RP Singh    2-0-4-0

5.1

Singh to Watson, no run, full length, almost yorker length. Watson digs it out dramatically

5.2

Singh to Watson, no run, a big appeal as Watson is rapped on the front pad. Looked very tight on the replay, as Watson wasn't quite playing a shot

5.3

Singh to Watson, 1 wide, outside off stump. Doing too much

5.3

Singh to Watson, no run, pushed firmly through the covers

5.4

Singh to Watson, no run, lovely delivery, pitches on middle-and-leg and bends back in. Watson not sure how best to combat this swing

5.5

Singh to Watson, 1 run, getting off strike is a good start, and Watts hustles through for a quick single as Watson squirts this one off an inside-edge

5.6

Singh to Watts, 1 run, a more forceful stroke to finish, on the front foot and driven behind square. A loud cheer from the sparce but partisan crowd

End of over 6 (3 runs) Scotland 15/1 (RR: 2.50)
DF Watts    5* (21b)      RP Singh    3-0-7-0
RR Watson    4* (8b)      AB Agarkar    3-0-8-1

6.1

Agarkar to Watts, no run, drawn onto the front foot again and pushed out to cover

RP Singh takes a moment on the boundary to sign some autographs

6.2

Agarkar to Watts, 1 run, Singh is back in action as Watts plays flashily through the gap at gully. A little chancy, but every run counts

6.3

Agarkar to Watson, no run, defended on the front foot

6.4

Agarkar to Watson, no run, better line and length now from Agarkar

6.5

Agarkar to Watson, no run, drawn forward again and determinedly defended

6.6

Agarkar to Watson, 3 runs, lovely shot, Watson gives himself room and smears Agarkar up and over the covers. But somehow the ball gets bogged down on the way to the boundary, and is easily overhauled. Very tough going for the batsmen

End of over 7 (4 runs) Scotland 19/1 (RR: 2.71)
RR Watson    7* (12b)      AB Agarkar    4-0-12-1
DF Watts    6* (23b)      RP Singh    3-0-7-0

7.1

Singh to Watson, 3 runs, another lovely strike, but this one too can't quite reach the boundary. A full-blooded drive stops about a metre short

7.2

Singh to Watts, no run

7.3

Singh to Watts, no run, defended off the front foot, and Singh fields and shies in his follow-through. A bit of aggression

7.4

Singh to Watts, no run, a massive yahoo outside off stump. A bit of width this time for Watts to cash in on. But he doesn't

7.5

Singh to Watts, no run, fuller length, almost a low full toss, and Singh fields again in his followthrough

7.6

Singh to Watts, OUT, a big appeal and that's gone. Big nip off the wicket and the thinnest of grazes as Singh finds enough movement to confound Watts. A dogged effort, but that's both openers gone now

DF Watts c †Dhoni b Singh 6 (34m 28b 0x4 0x6) SR: 21.42

End of over 8 (3 runs) Scotland 22/2 (RR: 2.75)

8.1

Agarkar to Watson, 1 wide

8.1

Agarkar to Watson, 1 run, full and straight. Drawn onto the front foot and nudged along the ground through the gully

8.2

Agarkar to Haq, no run, perfect line and length, just outside off stump and bending back. Majid comes within a whisker of being both bowled and caught-behind

8.3

Agarkar to Haq, no run, defended

8.4

Agarkar to Haq, FOUR, and at last, there's Scotland's first boundary and it was a beauty. Just a fraction too wide, but Majid was onto in a trice and square-drove it elegantly past point

8.5

Agarkar to Haq, no run, another forceful stroke through the covers, but this one isn't timed

8.6

Agarkar to Haq, 1 run, steered safely down to third man with an open face. A better over this for Scotland

End of over 9 (7 runs) Scotland 29/2 (RR: 3.22)
RM Haq    5* (5b 1x4)      AB Agarkar    5-0-19-1
RR Watson    11* (14b)      RP Singh    4-0-10-1

9.1

Singh to Haq, 1 run, full length and that's a genuine edge as Singh finds some trademark late movement. But it flies low and safely through the gap at gully

9.2

Singh to Watson, no run, massive appeal and that looked tight. Watson had a half stride in, it pitched in line, straightened up and hit him on the kneeroll. But possibly too high

9.3

Singh to Watson, no run, very wide of off stump but not called, strangely

9.4

Singh to Watson, FOUR, and the floodgates have opened ... sort of. An excellent cut shot whistles past point. And Watson has his first boundary

9.5

Singh to Watson, no run, lots of shouting and a bit of indecision about this one, but all safe in the end

9.6

Singh to Watson, no run, full and driven again, but picked up in the covers. And that's the end of the over

Right, time for a change. Here's Andrew McGlashan to talk you through the next ten

Hello everyone, Scotland battling hard in tough conditions...the Powerplay has been taken

10.1

Agarkar to Haq, no run, outside off stump, Haq lets it go to Dhoni

10.2

Agarkar to Haq, no run, slower ball, Haq plays a limp prod and the ball bounces twice through to the keeper

10.3

Agarkar to Haq, no run, on off stump, shapes to come back into the left-hander who defends back down the pitch

10.4

Agarkar to Haq, 1 run, hint of width this time, Haq opens the face and guides the ball down to third man

10.5

Agarkar to Watson, no run, sign of aggression from Watson, takes a couple of steps down the track but Agarkar follows him and fires the ball at the pads

10.6

Agarkar to Watson, no run, on off stump, Watson covers the movement and plays down to gully

End of over 11 (1 run) Scotland 35/2 (RR: 3.18)

11.1

11.2

Patel to Haq, no run, nice delivery, in the channel outside off stump and Haq is very close to getting the edge

11.3

Patel to Haq, no run, driven firmly to extra cover, still help for the bowlers even though the pitch is slow

11.4

Patel to Haq, no run, nips back at Haq, who defends down to Patel in his follow through

11.5

Patel to Haq, no run, close, another top delivery, extra bounce outside off stump and Haq plays a flat-footed drive without making contact

11.6

Patel to Haq, no run, makes contact with somewhere roughly near the middle of the bat, but goes straight to cover...a good start from Patel

End of over 12 (1 run) Scotland 36/2 (RR: 3.00)
RM Haq    7* (16b 1x4)      MM Patel    1-0-1-0

12.1

Agarkar to Watson, no run, on leg stump and nicely timed by Watson, but straight to the man at midwicket

12.2

Agarkar to Watson, no run, again Watson tries to get down the pitch to Agarkar, but the bowler pulls his length back and the ball thuds into the thigh pad

12.3

Agarkar to Watson, no run, that's the width Watson is looking for, but his expansive drive takes the toe-end of the bat and bobbles towards second slip

12.4

Agarkar to Watson, FOUR, shot of the day, on leg stump and elegantly flicked over square leg, one bounce over the boundary...Watson showing his power and placement

12.5

Agarkar to Watson, 1 run, nudged off the hip, wide of square leg who completes the fielding

12.6

Agarkar to Haq, FOUR, width from Agarkar and Haq throws the bat at it, edging high and wide over the slips down to third man...useful over for Scotland, some off the middle and some not

End of over 13 (9 runs) Scotland 45/2 (RR: 3.46)
RM Haq    11* (17b 2x4)      AB Agarkar    7-0-29-1

13.1

Patel to Watson, no run, behind the line, defended back to the bowler

13.2

Patel to Watson, FOUR, on middle and leg, flicked very fine and long leg can't get around to stop it, boundaries starting to flow now for Scotland as the bowlers lose their line

13.3

Patel to Watson, no run, hint of controversy in the middle, Watson drives on the up towards mid-off and RP Singh dives forward and claims the catch...Watson isn't happy and lingers on the outfield as the umpires come together and eventually Watson is called back as replays suggest the ball has bounced...it's been a season for calling batsmen back

13.4

Patel to Watson, no run, flicked towards mid-on...Watson needs to calm himself

13.5

Patel to Watson, no run, pushed into the covers, a bit of spice to this contest now

13.6

Patel to Watson, OUT, he's gone this time, his concentration clearly wasn't right and he flicks a ball off leg stump straight to square leg, Piyush Chawla comes forward and takes a fine low catch, no doubt about this one

RR Watson c Chawla b Patel 24 (48m 32b 3x4 0x6) SR: 75.00

Change of ends for RP Singh

14.1

Singh to Haq, OUT, and he breaks through straight away, bangs the ball and Haq goes for the pull. But it takes the splice and loops into the leg side, square leg skips around a few paces to take an easy catch...Scotland wobbling badly now

RM Haq c Chawla b Singh 11 (33m 18b 2x4 0x6) SR: 61.11

19.3

Patel to McCallum, no run, on off stump, comes forward and defends to mid-off

19.4

Patel to McCallum, 1 no ball, another no-ball, a firm drive to mid-off where Dravid pulls off a fine save to save a few runs

19.4

Patel to McCallum, no run, that's more like it, outside off stump and moves away off the seam to beat McCallum's push...still plenty on offer for the seamers if they hit the right spot

19.5

Patel to McCallum, no run, solid from McCallum, onto the front foot and played to point

19.6

Patel to McCallum, no run, what a beauty, leapt off a length and seamed away from the right-hander...that would have been too good for many better players than McCallum

So with Scotland trying to fight back, it's over to Andrew Miller - who is very happy to talk of his Scottish roots when it suits him - for the next 10 overs.

And that coming from a ginge with "Mc" in his name. He claims to hail from the Isle of Man though ...

Chawla to McCallum, no run, a bit of a long-hop, but McCallum can't quite time his thump through the off side

20.4

Chawla to McCallum, no run, quicker and fuller, and that hustles onto the bat. McCallum defends hastily off the back foot

20.5

Chawla to McCallum, no run, down on the sweep and well nudged behind square

20.6

Chawla to McCallum, no run, the end of a very tidy first over

12.55pm The match has been reduced to 49 overs a side, but play will be resuming shortly. Here come the players in something resembling sunshine - India go into a huddle as Gavin Hamilton and Neil McCallum stride out to the middle.

12.40pm The rain has stopped and the umpires are taking a look. Watch this space

Rain stops play again Here come the players ... but here comes the rain! Dravid stops in his tracks and off they go again ...

"It's horizontal rain," says Graham Gooch in the commentary box. This time its much heavier, and the groundstaff are in full action now.

The pitch has been covered by a damp soggy tarpaulin, which has Gooch in something approaching apoplexy as he muses on how that will affect the surface. But this is pretty nasty now. We could be stuck for a while. In the meantime, why not read Jamie Alter's bulletin.

Rain stops play The weather has been threatening all morning, and here it comes now. The covers are coming out but this won't last for too long. Won't help the outfield quicken up though

In fact, it's more or less stopped already. The umpires are in the middle and a resumption won't be far away

CM Wright run out 37 (36m 34b 2x4 1x6) SR: 108.82

The end of a fine cameo, and a measure of redemption for Agarkar too. There's more rain in the air ... can we finish the innings?

45.2

Patel to Hoffmann, no run, full and straight, and driven back to the bowler

45.3

Patel to Hoffmann, 1 run, smeared down to third man where Agarkar fields on the bounce

45.4

Patel to Blain, OUT, a big smear from Blain and Chawla gathers well with a tumble at mid-on

JAR Blain c Chawla b Patel 4 (15m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

45.5

Patel to Hoffmann, 2 runs, a buccaneering strike from Hoffmann, through the covers

45.6

Patel to Hoffmann, 2 runs, more of the same, and that's the end of a very impressive recovery from the Scots.

Here come the players, Scotland out first followed by Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa. It's Andrew McGlashan to take you through the first 10 overs of the chase and Paul Hoffmann will open the bowling

India will be chasing a revised total of 209 in 46 overs

The conditions were tough and there were lots of stops and starts in the innings, but Scotland kept their composure well. There will be a Duckworth-Lewis adjustment to take account of the lost overs, so India will be chasing a total in excess of 205. We'll let you know as soon as possible.

End of over 46 (5 runs) Scotland 203/9
PJC Hoffmann    5* (4b)      MM Patel    9-0-36-2
JD Nel    0* (0b)      AB Agarkar    9-0-54-2
