One of a new generation of English umpires, Andy Hicks has worked his way up through the ranks, having started out in the Birmingham League in 2001, from where he graduated to county second XI fixtures in 2002. Following a stint on the Minor County circuit in 2007, he was appointed to the ECB's reserve list in 2008, and took charge of Surrey's season curtain-raiser against Loughborough UCCE at The Oval in April, before overseeing New Zealand's rain-affected draw against Kent at Canterbury.
