Profile

Greg Smith is a South African-born allrounder who has settled in England on a Kolpak deal. Part of South Africa's squad at the Under-19 World Cup in 2001-02, he was briefly courted by Griqualand West before heading north and squeezing into the Derbyshire second XI in the 2004 season. By 2007 he had become an established member of the first team, batting in the lower middle order and bowling both seam and offspin. Some like to decry Smith as the sort of player - neither English nor a crowd-puller - county cricket could do without, but his teammates would not have agreed. In 2012 he moved to Essex, where he acquired an instant seniority, although his second season was more productive. Smith also played as an overseas played in Zimbabwe in 2010-11 and took part in the 2013 Dhaka Premier League.
