New Zealand tour of England and Scotland, 1st ODI: England v New Zealand at Chester-le-Street, Jun 15, 2008
England won by 114 runs
15 June 2008 (50-over match)

10.40am Just a few minutes away from the start, the players are making their way out. Bell and Wright to start things off for England, the surface looks good although there might be some early movement.

Good morning and welcome to the first one-day international between England and New Zealand at Chester-le-Street. I'm Andrew McGlashan and will be taking you through the first part of the day.

England took the honours in the Twenty20 with a crushing nine-wicket win, so carry momentum into this match. However, in their most recent ODI series against New Zealand they lost 3-1 in February.

We have some team news for you. Very exciting, I know. England have recalled Ryan Sidebottom in place of Dimitri Mascarenhas, Ian Bell will continue to open alongside Luke Wright and Andrew Strauss' long journey north looks like a waste of time.

For New Zealand, Tim Southee makes his ODI debut, Gareth Hopkins keeps wicket so Brendon McCullum plays as a batsman. They are missing Jacob Oram, who has a hamstring injury, which is a huge blow for them.

England 1 Ian Bell, 2 Luke Wright, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Ravi Bopara, 5 Paul Collingwood (capt), 6 Owais Shah, 7 Tim Ambrose (wk), 8 Graeme Swann, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Ryan Sidebottom, 11 James Anderson

New Zealand 1 Jamie How, 2 Brendon McCullum, 3 James Marshall, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Scott Styris, 6 Daniel Flynn, 7 Gareth Hopkins (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Michael Mason

Toss New Zealand have won the toss and put England into bat, so they must fancy chasing a target this afternoon.

0.1

Mills to Bell, 1 no ball, well, well, a beauty to start with, jags away off the seam past the edge of Bell's bat...but it's a no-ball. Mills will like the look of that movement. Actually it looks like it flicked the glove, what a left-off for Bell early on

Batsmen crossed so Tim Ambrose won't face a ball on his debut innings

That innings was all about Kevin Pietersen, a great effort from him as his 110 helped England added 109 off the final 10 overs. He had superb support from Paul Collingwood and Owais Shah, leaving New Zealand a tough chase in the second half of this game. Their bowlers struggled, and they really missed Jacob Oram. But everyone will enjoy their lunch savouring an outstanding knock from Pietersen. Join Jenny in around 45 minutes for the run chase.

End of over 50 (15 runs) England 307/5

    • KP Pietersen 110 (112b 8x4 3x6)
