Pakistan tour of England and Scotland, 2006 / Commentary

2.25pm The two sides take to the middle as the remaining covers, which looked to be protecting others parts of the square, are removed. I feat we will see them again before the day is out. Shoaib Akhtar to open the bowling ... here we go

2.15pm Ian Botham has turned weatherman and says it shouldn't rain ... and then admits that the groundstaff reckon it will hit at around 5pm and be very heavy! He reports the pitch has grass, is firm although there is some moisture underneath. If right, that means Pakistan's bowlers can expect some help early on with accounts for Inzamam's decision.

2.05pm Welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the first ODI in the five-match series. After events of the last ten days it's a delight to be reporting on the game itself.

Inzamam-ul-Haq won the toss and made the slightly surprising decision to bowl first at Cardiff, meaning his team will have to chase a target under lights this evening. And rain is forecast to hit Wales sometime during the late afternoon and early evening.

England have made one change from the side that went down by five wickets in the Twenty20 at Bristol with Rikki Clarke replacing Michael Yardy, despite Yardy's promising performance on Saturday. This will be Clarke's first appearance for England since he played against West Indies, at Trent Bridge, in June 2004. He is seen as the closest option England have to cover for Andrew Flintoff.

2.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, slightly wide but Strauss smacks it straight to cover point

2.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Trescothick, 1 no ball, defended off the back foot but a no-ball anyhow

2.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Trescothick, FOUR, Trescothick turned square and the ball flew at catchable height through where third slip would have been - Inzamam only has two slips - for four. Shoaib could have had both openers in that over

3.1

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run

3.2

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, OUT, Strauss aimed a rather ambitious flick over square leg but the shot was indecisive and the ball lobbed high to Afridi who barely had to move. It wasn't really short enough for the stroke he played

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, a touch short outside off but the ball took off and was taken high above his head by Akmal

4.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, 1 run, unconvincing push into his pad and Trescothick called him for a quick single even though the ball barely went a yard. Good running. Shoaib appears to be limping.

4.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Trescothick, no run, off pads and dribbled down the leg where Akmal gathered. More distress signals from Shoaib

4.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Trescothick, no run, Trescothick leaves alone and then holds the pose for the photographers. Shoaib's limp gets worse ...

4.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Trescothick, no run, into Trescothick's body and jabbed into the leg. Shoaib's pace remains undiminished

4.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Trescothick, no run, lovely ball angled across the left-hander and Trescothick definitely played and missed. Shoaib walking to third man like he was aged 70. The physio is waiting for him at the rope, assuming he ever makes it that far

Thanks Martin. It's Will here. Excellent start for Pakistan, in particular by Mohammad Asif; he's been unplayable at times. England are in a right old pickle here. So, it's Razzaq to bowl from the River Taff end

Now it's Will Luke, refreshed by some chocolate biscuits and a quick fag behind the lifts. And he thinks we don't know he smokes ...

18.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, neatly timed off the back foot but straight to mid-off. He really does look

18.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, 1 no ball, yowzers! Shoaib's slower ball comes out all wrong (for once) and it balloons over Bell's head. That's a terrifying delivery - clearly not intentional from Shoaib - but the umpire rightly warns him nevertheless

18.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, lovely shot! He really climbed into that, driving it with a flourish on the front foot but again straight to a shortish mid-off

18.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, excellent line from Shoaib on middle-and-off with just a hint of away swing. Bell defends it with a straight bat off the back foot

18.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, FOUR, fabulous shot as Bell square cuts with immense power, timing it quite beautifully through cover point. That zinged across the outfield like a tracer

18.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, shorter delivery - slower, too (73mph) - and Bell jumps back into his crease, defending it on his toes. Well, not on his toes you understand...with his bat, obviously

22.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bell, 1 wide, Rana was probably hoping that would boom away from the right hander, but it was wide of his leg stump and called as such

22.3

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, no run, down the leg side, Bell misses out here. That was a gimme for four down to fine leg

23.5

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, no run, timed off the back foot to short midwicket, no run there

Just one needed for a very fine fifty from Bell

23.6

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, 1 leg bye, ooh superb ball angling back into the right hander who is beaten, the ball bobbling out into the covers. Super ball, that, and they run a leg-bye

23.6

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, 1 leg bye, ooh superb ball angling back into the right hander who is beaten, the ball bobbling out into the covers. Super ball, that, and they run a leg-bye

And that's drinks. Steady progress by England so far (well, one boundary in the last ten overs) amid very tidy bowling by Pakistan. Time for the final 15 overs and to see if England can boost their total - they need 240 on this pitch - or if Pakistan will keep the strangle on them... and Mohammad Asif, who's got three wickets so far, still has two overs left. Two slips for Gough

Andrew Strauss is fairly fuming. He really does not want to be out there - and I must admit, it does look very wet indeed.

Here come the England fielders but by all accounts they're not very happy to be out there. The tractor, with a rope trailed behind, raced across the outfield and the spray generated was quite alarming. Anyway...here come Pakistan.

20.10BST Good news! We have a start time of 20.31BST. Not long to wait now. Time for tea and I suggest you do the same. Pakistan's target is 159 from 32 overs.

7.55pmBST And the covers are coming off! The umpires are in the middle, nodding, and the players are on the balcony, shuffling with interest. We'll let you know what's going on as and when

7.40pmBST The rain is still coming down at Cardiff, and boy is it tipping down. The covers are very definitely on, and they won't be coming off for a while. There are a few groundstaff standing around by the covers, hands in pockets, apparently resigned to the fact there's not going to be any play any time soon.

There's a cut-off time of 9.21pm (BST); that's the latest they could start a 20-over innings and the match would stand. Obviously if they do come back on at any stage, Pakistan would then face a revised target, but we can't tell you what that would be yet, of course. But what we can tell you is that were they to play just the 20 overs, the target then would be 115.

We'll bring you more updates as we've got them, but until then you've got plenty of time to check out our features and news on the site.

19.32BST The umpires have wandered out to the middle, and just as quickly returned to the pavilion. It's still raining - heavily, now, too - and is looking increasingly gloomy. We'll have updates for you when we get it.

19.00BST Still no news I'm afraid, and it continues to rain...

Good evening, and welcome back. Sadly, the news is not good. The rain has been promoted from merely spitting to a brisk shower, and the covers remain on the pitch. Cardiff's hardiest are braving the elements, armed with a multicolour of umbrellas, but we could be in for a big delay. We'll have news as and when.

Innings break

Well, Pakistan have bowled well there to bowl out England for 202. Gough and Broad did well to boost England over the 200-mark but it's Pakistan who will be well confident of taking the early honours in this series. Join Will Luke after the break to see how they get on.
