NatWest Series [Pakistan in England] - 3rd match

England v Pakistan

Pakistan won by 2 wickets (with 7 balls remaining)

2.30pm Shoaib Akhtar to take first dart. He's just scratching out his run-up. Hairstyle alert: he's sporting a half-ponytail today.

Morning/afternoon/evening (delete as appropriate) everyone and welcome to the third one-dayer between England and Pakistan. I'm Jenny Thompson and, with Martin Williamson, I'll be bringing you coverage such as the following news: Pakistan have won the toss and put England in. England have made one change, bringing in Sajid Mahmood for the injured Darren Gough. Pakistan named an unchanged XI to the one which won at Lord's.

So the Pakistan team is: Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Inzamam-ulHaq (capt), Abdul Razzaq, Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal (wk), Naved-ul-Hasan, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asif.

And the England team: Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Strauss (capt), Ian Bell, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Jamie Dalrymple, Rikki Clarke, Chris Read (wk), Sajod Mahmood, Jon Lewis and Stuart Broad.

2.15pmBST Just gearing up for the start here now, so let's check on the weather and the pitch. There are beautiful conditions at The Rose Bowl, great light and there might be something in the wicket to interest the bowlers. "It feels cold," shouts Ian Botham, referring to the turf and not a nice glass of Chablis, "which might mean there's some moisture in the pitch and it could seam around early on." Pakistan's awesome pace attack will be licking their lips already.

0.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Trescothick, OUT, what a fantastic ball! An inswinging yorker which is far, far too good for Trescothick, swinging right into him. It comes off both pads and crashes right into the stumps. A beauty and Trescothick's walking off already. Thanks for coming

ME Trescothick b Shoaib Akhtar 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

0.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, 1 run, a misfield at a wideish mid-off and the batsmen scamper through a single to loud cheers from the packed house

0.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, well bowled, full, and the batsman just digs that out, showing the full face of his bat

0.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, FOUR, oooh, a good attempted yorker but that's well played - very well played - by Strauss who clips it off his toes and it races away through square. Then again that was bowled at 90mph and it's a good outfield so it's bound to fly

0.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, 1 run, tickled into the covers and the batsmen hasten a single

0.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, short and Bell pulls out of that one at the last minute as the ball bends away from his outside edge on the up

End of over 1 (6 runs) England 6/1 (RR: 6.00)
IR Bell    1* (2b)      Shoaib Akhtar    1-0-6-1
AJ Strauss    5* (3b 1x4)

1.1

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, Asif drifts into bowl, pitches that on a perfect length and Strauss is forced to play a forward defensive

1.2

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, 1 wide, very wide, although near the outside edge, but that's the right decision

1.2

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, 1 run, full but down the legside and that's played easily behind square

1.3

Mohammad Asif to Bell, no run, pitches on a length, nips back and there's a big shout for that one, but from the bowler only and the umpire's not interested

1.4

Mohammad Asif to Bell, no run, sails down the off-side channel, the batsman leaves it alone

1.5

Mohammad Asif to Bell, no run, a touch shorter, the batsman plays an unconvincing defensive off the back foot and that gets a thick inside edge which falls harmlessly in front of him

1.6

Mohammad Asif to Bell, no run, a forward defensive this time and that's another dot. A tidy over

End of over 2 (2 runs) England 8/1 (RR: 4.00)
IR Bell    1* (6b)      Mohammad Asif    1-0-2-0
AJ Strauss    6* (5b 1x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    1-0-6-1

2.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, 3 runs, short and down leg and that's whipped easily off the legs but Asif races round from long leg and slides on to that one, cannoning it back in

2.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, Shoaib comes wider of the crease and that's just left alone

2.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, left alone again

2.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, once more Bell shoulders arms as a ball on a good length sails wide of the off stump

2.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, FOUR, Bell reaches out to try to late cut a looser delivery at 90mph but the balls flies off the outside edge and races away down through the slips

2.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, full and that's cover-driven straight to... cover of course

End of over 3 (7 runs) England 15/1 (RR: 5.00)
IR Bell    5* (11b 1x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    2-0-13-1
AJ Strauss    9* (6b 1x4)      Mohammad Asif    1-0-2-0

3.1

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, well bowled, just drops on a good length and that's defended on the front foot

3.2

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, stock delivery, hits the seam and nips away from the lefthander

3.3

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, 2 runs, Strauss comes down the pitch and squeezes that out behind point

Second slip moves wider

3.4

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, 1 run, short and on the legs and that's easily guided out to square where it's rushed back in

3.5

Mohammad Asif to Bell, 1 run, lovely shot, waited for that one which pitches wide outside the off stump and Bell crashes a lovely cut through point

3.6

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, 1 wide, Strauss thinks about chasing that one, pulls out of the shot and that's called wide to cheers from the England fans - they'll cheer any run right now, it seemds, although it's a little soon to be panicking of course... it's not such a bad start

3.6

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, FOUR, fuller and flicked away with consummate timing through square leg. Scorcher

End of over 4 (9 runs) England 24/1 (RR: 6.00)
AJ Strauss    16* (11b 2x4)      Mohammad Asif    2-0-11-0
IR Bell    6* (12b 1x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    2-0-13-1

4.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, 3 runs, banged in, short, wide and Bell plays a lovely backfoot cut. The outfield isn't that quick on reflection, it looks a little bit stodgy out there

4.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, 1 run, paddled right round to a wide long leg

4.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, short and wide again and Bell leans into a cover-drive but finds the fielder

4.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, slower ball, picked, and that's worked into midwicket where it's easily collected by the fielder who just bends down to meet it

4.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, hostile from Shoaib, coming wide of the crease again, and that's a good ball, pitching on off and nipping right back in off the seam at the righthander

4.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, 1 run, tries a similar delivery, but strays down leg this time and that's squirted into the legside for a quick single

Just one slip for Asif

End of over 5 (5 runs) England 29/1 (RR: 5.80)
IR Bell    10* (17b 1x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    3-0-18-1
AJ Strauss    17* (12b 2x4)      Mohammad Asif    2-0-11-0

5.1

Mohammad Asif to Bell, no run, forced on to the back foot to defend a tidy short ball

5.2

Mohammad Asif to Bell, 1 run, guided out into the cover region, the fielder hurries round to scoop it and wing it back in

5.3

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, full ball and that's defended on the front foot

5.4

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, FOUR, comes down the pitch, plants his front foot to the pitch of the ball and clips that through midwicket, watching the ball all the way through the legside. He's been playing some very elegant legside shots today and that one is right up there

Fine leg comes up into the circle and the square leg drops onto the boundary

5.5

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, 1 run, dabbed down behind square

5.6

Mohammad Asif to Bell, no run, hair flapping in the breeze and a determined expression on his face, Asif ganders in and plants the ball on a decent length, with the batsman defending that comfortably in the end

End of over 6 (6 runs) England 35/1 (RR: 5.83)
IR Bell    11* (20b 1x4)      Mohammad Asif    3-0-17-0
AJ Strauss    22* (15b 3x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    3-0-18-1

6.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, the batsmen look for a single as that drops a touch wide and it's half-driven into silly mid-off

6.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, ooh! Great delivery, squaring up Strauss a treat as that one rises and just to say misses his outside edge as it flies through to the keeper

6.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, 1 run, good area to bowl to Strauss, inviting the drive and a big outside edge flies a touch aerially off the bottom of the bat and on towards third man

6.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, Bell leaps on to his back foot, and gets into position early to play a defence with the full face - and he holds that pose

6.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run

6.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, no run, pings that one in on the off-stump line and that's solidly defended

End of over 7 (1 run) England 36/1 (RR: 5.14)
IR Bell    11* (23b 1x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    4-0-19-1
AJ Strauss    23* (18b 3x4)      Mohammad Asif    3-0-17-0

7.1

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, that's rushed past the outside edge as Strauss shapes to defend on the back foot. He nods his head to acknowledge the ball, as if to say, "Fair enough"

7.2

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, on a decent length, Strauss looks to work that one into midwicket this time but without any real power

7.3

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, FOUR, top shot. Strauss shuffles down the pitch and merely swats that with the bottom of his blade away through gully. Nice

7.4

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, comes down the pitch again, thinking about looking for a single and sets off for a few steps before rushing back to his mark - there was never a run there

7.5

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, the bowler pushes that one right up and Strauss can only drive powerlessly to cover. Good bowling

7.6

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, right on the money and the batsman digs it out with a front-foot defensive

End of over 8 (4 runs) England 40/1 (RR: 5.00)
AJ Strauss    27* (24b 4x4)      Mohammad Asif    4-0-21-0
IR Bell    11* (23b 1x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    4-0-19-1

8.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, 1 run, squared up by a short one but lands bat on ball which flies down without danger into the slip region

8.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, looks to drive that through cover

8.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, no run, "waiting there," comes the call as Strauss helps that to the man at cover and so the batsmen duly wait there

8.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, FOUR, clipped strongly, and with good timing, off the legs and that runs through square

8.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, FOUR, full toss and that's dispatched with an unconvincing, though powerful, drive through third man, after the batsman opens the face. The ball beats the third man

8.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Strauss, 2 runs, helped off the legs this time.

That's a good over for England who have recovered after the desperately early loss of Trescothick

End of over 9 (11 runs) England 51/1 (RR: 5.66)
AJ Strauss    37* (29b 6x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    5-0-30-1
IR Bell    12* (24b 1x4)      Mohammad Asif    4-0-21-0

9.1

Mohammad Asif to Bell, no run, pitched right up there and that's solidly defended. Good ball

9.2

Mohammad Asif to Bell, no run, defended off the back foot this time

9.3

Mohammad Asif to Bell, 2 runs, not a proper bouncer and Bell was quickly on to that one, pulling it high and wide

9.4

Mohammad Asif to Bell, 1 run, played off his legs behind square

9.5

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, that's pushed up there and Strauss defends it

9.6

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, comes out to meet that one and he misses it completely but is back in his crease before Akmal can even think of a stumping opportunity

There's a change now, Abdul Razzaq coming into the attack. There's a change for us, too: Martin's been itching to get onto commentary, so here he is

End of over 10 (3 runs) England 54/1 (RR: 5.40)
AJ Strauss    37* (31b 6x4)      Mohammad Asif    5-0-24-0
IR Bell    15* (28b 1x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    5-0-30-1

10.1

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, no run, outside off, big swing and a miss

10.2

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, 3 runs, confidently driven through extra cover off the front foot, Yousuf caught the ball inches in from the rope

10.3

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, FOUR, again overpitched and driven through the same spot with more timing and this time the chase was to no avail

10.4

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, no run, better line and nothing that time

10.5

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, no run, short and on leg stump, swatted behind square but straight to the one man there

10.6

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, 2 runs, wide outside off and cut just to the right of a diving cover. A good over for England with nine coming off it

End of over 11 (9 runs) England 63/1 (RR: 5.72)
AJ Strauss    43* (35b 7x4)      Abdul Razzaq    1-0-9-0
IR Bell    18* (30b 1x4)      Mohammad Asif    5-0-24-0

11.1

Mohammad Asif to Bell, 1 run, dropped into the off side, no more than a couple of yards from the batsman, and a well-run and comfortable single

11.2

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, angled into Strauss and he was too cramped to be able to do anything other than defend

11.3

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, a stride down the track and hammered straight back from where it came ... into Bell's chest and he goes down like he has been struck by Mike Tyson. Strauss, good team man that he is, finds the whole thing amusing until he realises that Bell is in some distress

Bell getting treatment. He'll be fine but he's gone a bit red in the face!

11.4

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, no run, again driven, but straighter and with less power

11.5

Mohammad Asif to Strauss, 1 run, edged into his body and the ball plops inches from the crease and Bell calls Strauss for a quick single ...Mohammad Asif aims a kick and Bell would have been worried had he connected properly

11.6

Mohammad Asif to Bell, 2 runs, clipped through midwicket, well placed and two with no alarms

End of over 12 (4 runs) England 67/1 (RR: 5.58)
IR Bell    21* (32b 1x4)      Mohammad Asif    6-0-28-0
AJ Strauss    44* (39b 7x4)      Abdul Razzaq    1-0-9-0

12.1

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, no run, punched off the back foot straight to extra cover where Shahid Yousuf , on for Shoaib, fields

12.2

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, 1 run, Strauss opened the face and angled the ball down to third man

12.3

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, no run, mistimed drive into the pitch

12.4

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, 1 run, Onto the back foot and again a case of tip-and-run as the ball is dropped feet from the bat

12.5

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, FOUR, Strauss uses his feet and slams the ball square - Mailk catches it but cannot prevent it trickling over the boundary

12.6

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, no run

Six off the over and England are looking good for a change. The sharp running between the wickets means the bowlers and fielders cannot settle.

End of over 13 (6 runs) England 73/1 (RR: 5.61)
AJ Strauss    49* (43b 8x4)      Abdul Razzaq    2-0-15-0
IR Bell    22* (34b 1x4)      Mohammad Asif    6-0-28-0

13.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bell, no run, sound backfoot defensive shot to straight ball

13.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bell, no run, again a good line and length and Bell can only play it up to mid-on

13.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bell, 1 run, slightly short on leg stump and eased to deepish square leg where Afridi ambles in and fields. A run by consent and no-one really broke sweat

13.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Strauss, no run, widish and there to cut but Strauss misses

13.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Strauss, 1 run, Strauss angles the ball from just outside off stump to third man to bring up his 10th ODI fifty off 45 balls to a big cheer from the crowd

13.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bell, 3 runs, Naved-ul-Hasan loses his line and Bell clips him into the wide open spaces around deep midwicket

End of over 14 (5 runs) England 78/1 (RR: 5.57)
IR Bell    26* (38b 1x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    1-0-5-0
AJ Strauss    50* (45b 8x4)      Abdul Razzaq    2-0-15-0

14.1

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, no run, No room for Bell to do anything other than play it into the off

14.2

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, no run, another one on a line and length

14.3

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, no run, Bell tries to ease the ball to cover for a single but hits it too hard

14.4

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, 1 run, worked from middle stump behind square on the leg

14.5

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, OUT, Strauss comes down the track and aims to smack the ball over the top but gets an all-too-obvious edge and even Akmal can't muck that one up

AJ Strauss c †Kamran Akmal b Abdul Razzaq 50 (67m 46b 8x4 0x6) SR: 108.69

Razzaq has kept the pressure up with some tight bowling in this over, but runs were coming and Strauss didn't really need to play that shot.

14.6

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, 1 run, eased towards mid-off and Pietersen scampers throughto get off the mark straight away

Third Powerplay taken. Well, whatever next

End of over 15 (2 runs) England 80/2 (RR: 5.33)
KP Pietersen    1* (1b)      Abdul Razzaq    3-0-17-1
IR Bell    27* (42b 1x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    1-0-5-0

15.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Pietersen, FOUR, flicked off one leg behind square and falls a few feet short of a diving Razzaq at backward square-leg and through him to the boundary

15.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Pietersen, 2 runs, well placed on the leg side and despite huffing and puffing from the fielders it was a risk-free two

15.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Pietersen, no run, expansive leave by KP

Naved-ul-Hasan pulled up grimacing after that ball

15.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Pietersen, no run, exaggerated defensive shot

15.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Pietersen, no run, pushed defensive shot, comes off the toe of the bat and loops inches wide of Naved-ul-Hasan who dived well to his left

15.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Pietersen, no run

Typical Pietersen over, with drama, six runs and two less-than-controlled shots that could have gone to hand on another day

End of over 16 (6 runs) England 86/2 (RR: 5.37)
KP Pietersen    7* (7b 1x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    2-0-11-0

16.2

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, FOUR, lovely clip through the gap at wide midwicket, all along the ground to the boundary

16.4

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, no run, another ball that offers nothing

16.5

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, no run, overpitched and driven straight, Shoaib fields but there was a run there as it was to his left hand and he was deep

16.6

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, no run, angled behind square on the off but quickly pounced on

End of over 17 (4 runs) England 90/2 (RR: 5.29)
IR Bell    31* (48b 2x4)      Abdul Razzaq    4-0-21-1
KP Pietersen    7* (7b 1x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    2-0-11-0

17.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Pietersen, no run, played into the covers but straight to a man. Pietersen wants to get on with this, you can see it

17.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Pietersen, FOUR, all wrists as he flicks it from outside off stump wide of mid-on and never anything other than a four. The kind of shot that makes we mortals envious

17.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Pietersen, no run, sublime to the ridiculous as he aims a wild heave

17.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Pietersen, no run, driven hard and Inzamam ... yes, Inzamam, dives like an Italian centre foward in the penalty box to field and sits up with a slight grin on his face

17.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Pietersen, 1 run, firmly driven down the ground

17.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bell, no run, attempted to work the ball to third man but got in a bit of a muddle and it ended up trickling to Akmal

End of over 18 (5 runs) England 95/2 (RR: 5.27)
IR Bell    31* (49b 2x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    3-0-16-0
KP Pietersen    12* (12b 2x4)      Abdul Razzaq    4-0-21-1

18.1

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, 1 run, dug out of the blockhole and turned out to be an easy run to mid-off who has dropped back a yard or two to compensate for Pietersen's power

18.2

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, 1 run, this time Bell's attempt to work the ball to third man is successful

18.3

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, (no ball) 1 run, played to midwicket and the optimistic shy at the stumps misses by some way but almost floors Pietersen as he makes his ground

18.3

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, 1 run, Angled to third man ... Bell likes that shot!

18.4

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, no run, good line and defended for the photographers

18.5

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, no run

18.6

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, no run, turned to leg but never a chance of a single

End of over 19 (5 runs) England 100/2 (RR: 5.26)
KP Pietersen    14* (17b 2x4)      Abdul Razzaq    5-0-26-1
IR Bell    33* (51b 2x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    3-0-16-0

19.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bell, no run, pitched up and driven to mid-off

19.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bell, no run, better line and Bell can only block it

19.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bell, no run, forced onto the back foot, Pietersen started coming but quickly yelled "no, no, no" and retreated to safety

19.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bell, no run, pushed to the right of a tumbling bowler but he needn't have bothered as mid-on was ambling round to cut it off

19.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bell, no run, driven with no power to extra cover. A maiden from Naved-ul-Hasan

Jenny is back from powdering her nose (and, trust me, that needs more powder than the gunpowder plot) and will take you through the next 10 overs.

Oi! There was no powdering, just plenty of stitching up, from what I can see. Hello!

End of over 20 (maiden) England 100/2 (RR: 5.00)
IR Bell    33* (57b 2x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    4-1-16-0
KP Pietersen    14* (17b 2x4)      Abdul Razzaq    5-0-26-1

20.1

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, 1 run, on-drives that quickly down to long-on, where it rolls and is picked up

20.2

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, 1 run

20.3

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, no run, Pietersen drives that straight back at the bowler who misses it, which is a good job as Bell was way out of his crease at the non-striker's end when the ball crashed into the stumps there

20.4

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, 1 run, squeezed out to mid-on

20.5

Abdul Razzaq to Bell, 1 run, deliciously cheeky late cut

20.6

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, FOUR, strayed down leg and that's a very strong flick through midwicket and it runs away; that's Pietersen's third four

End of over 21 (8 runs) England 108/2 (RR: 5.14)
KP Pietersen    20* (21b 3x4)      Abdul Razzaq    6-0-34-1

21.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bell, FOUR, top shot, goes aerial for a two-bounce four. Really early on to that one and it's just chipped over mid-on

Asif goes back to long-on

21.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bell, 1 run, squeezed out to midwicket off the off stump

21.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Pietersen, OUT, Pietersen tried to work that one out to the leg side but a thick outside edge flies up for a gentle catch at backward point and that's the dangerman gone. A bit of a waste of a shot, there, it probably goes without saying and Pietersen knows it: he shakes his head as he watches the replay of his demise on the big screen

KP Pietersen c Mohammad Hafeez b Naved-ul-Hasan 20 (26m 22b 3x4 0x6) SR: 90.90

Collingwood strides in

21.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Collingwood, FOUR, off the mark immediately, guiding that away through fine leg as the ball just strays down leg. Inzamam dropped to his knees in despair at that one and Naved scratches his head, annoyed

21.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Collingwood, no run, strongly defended on the front foot

21.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Collingwood, no run, worked off the back foot into cover

22.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Collingwood, no run, shuffles over to meet that one and it's defended firmly on the front foot

22.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Collingwood, 1 run, bangs that one in just in front of the toes, a touch short of yorker length and that's driven calmly to mid-on for one

24.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Bell, OUT, drives a sharp catch to point on the up. Full of length and that was a thick outside edge. Great decision from Inzamam to bring Shoaib back - it's already paid dividends, dismissing Bell just when he was showing real touch there

24.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Dalrymple, no run, ooooh, attempted yorker swings back in and misses the off stump by that much and the first an astonished, worried Dalrymple knows of it is when he hears the thud in Akmal's gloves. That was hostile and the ball's reversing nicely here. Expect more fireworks

24.4

24.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Dalrymple, no run, the batsman plays it late, jamming his bat on it just in time

Possible bowling change now... Afridi maybe for a change of pace? Ah yes, here he comes. Let's see how he skids them through today

26.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Dalrymple, no run, comes forward with a very deliberate full face of the bat and Dalrymple defends yet again

Slip and a gully in

26.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Dalrymple, FOUR, more sloppiness in the outfield and Rana Naved fails to stop that cleanly. He looks to have hurt his shoulder in the process. Inzamam and Shoaib both lean over onto their knees in frustration before realising that Rana Naved is injured. Thanks Martin. So England have set themselves up nicely for a last ten-over charge. But Pakistan could always peg them back quickly with a few quick wickets.

Mez is one man hoping for some wickets, if only to see the chicken dance. He thinks he's nailed the official steps. "Shape a chicken beak with your hands!" he commands, like a wannabe children's entertainer. "Open and close it four times. Make chicken wings with your arms and flap your wings four times." That's not the end of it, kids, but unfortunately it's time to get back to the cricket. We'll keep you in the loop if we see any chicken-dancing action out there.

CMW Read    2* (8b)      Naved-ul-Hasan    8-1-42-2
PD Collingwood    50* (55b 4x4)      Abdul Razzaq    8-0-44-2

46.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Collingwood, 3 runs, short and that's lashed out to the cover boundary where the sweeper, Shoaib Malik, fluffs it. Not Pakistan's finest hour in the field, it's fair to say

46.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Read, 1 run

46.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Collingwood, FOUR, lays bat on a wide yorker and a huge outside edge whisks on its merry way down through third man

46.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Collingwood, no run, ooh, not far from chopping on there as a top edge jumps over the stumps

46.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Collingwood, 2 runs, quickly on to that one and rushes it out to the off-side boundary, just in front of point

46.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Collingwood, 1 run, rubbish full toss but Shoaib gets away with it as a firmly struck pull is tidily collected on the square boundary

End of over 47 (11 runs) England 244/6 (RR: 5.19)
PD Collingwood    60* (60b 5x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    9-1-47-2
CMW Read    3* (9b)      Naved-ul-Hasan    8-1-42-2

47.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Collingwood, 1 run, clipped away off the legs for a single

47.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Read, 1 run, full toss swatted straight back past the bowler

47.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Read, 2 runs, slower ball sits up and the batsmen just about make their two runs as the ball flies out to cover

47.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Read, 1 run, right up in the blockhole and that's scrambled out by Read

47.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Collingwood, OUT, slower ball, tried to work it round the corner, but got a top edge. Now, that's a smart catch by Shoaib Akhtar, running forward to cling on to that one held over his shoulder at square leg. A useful innings comes to an end and it will be up to the tail to continue the swinging now

PD Collingwood c Shoaib Akhtar b Naved-ul-Hasan 61 (104m 62b 5x4 0x6) SR: 98.38

Here come Sajid Mahmood, but it's Read to face as the batsmen crossed

47.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Read, 1 run, full toss crashed out to mid-on

End of over 48 (6 runs) England 250/7 (RR: 5.20)
CMW Read    8* (13b)      Naved-ul-Hasan    9-1-48-3
SI Mahmood    0* (0b)      Shoaib Akhtar    9-1-47-2

48.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Read, no run, yorker, dug out

48.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Read, FOUR, the batsman gives himself a bit of room, waits, and helps it off the toe-end of the bat right over through cover with some sumptuous timing. Glorious

48.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Read, 1 run, OUT, worked out to mid-on and the batsmen look for a suicidal two. That's a good throw back in and Shoaib stands calm, at the bowler's end, whipping off the bails to leave the batsman some vital inches short. Mahmood is gone without facing a delivery

SI Mahmood run out 0 (3m 0b 0x4 0x6) SR: -

In strides Jon Lewis

48.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Read, 1 wide, strays down leg with that one

48.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Read, 1 run, pulled high in the air right over the bowler's head who can't make it despite a frantic chase

48.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Lewis, 1 run, interesting cricket. Lewis waits and dinks that back behind point but Hafeez shells a very difficult chance indeed, wide to his left. Good work to stop the runs, all the same

48.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Read, FOUR, top shot! Have some of that! The batsman rushes that back over Shoaib's head and way, way over to long-off for a one-bounce four. A full bloodied swing and gets the reward

End of over 49 (12 runs) England 262/8 (RR: 5.34)
CMW Read    18* (18b 2x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    10-1-59-2
J Lewis    1* (1b)      Naved-ul-Hasan    9-1-48-3

49.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Lewis, 2 runs, played off the back foot into cover

49.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Lewis, FOUR, lovely stuff from the batsman, dire stuff from the fielder. Lewis square drives that with some force but Afridi tries to stop the ball with his foot - not in the textbook, of course - and though he gets a toe to it, it runs over the rope

49.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Lewis, OUT, much better fielding and takes the catch at long-on, sliced away by Lewis and that's well held after an initial misjudgement, which has Shoaib Malik scrambling backwards to take that over his head

J Lewis c Shoaib Malik b Naved-ul-Hasan 7 (7m 4b 1x4 0x6) SR: 175.00

Broad in, but Read will face as the batsmen crossed

49.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Read, 2 runs, whipped out on the on-side

49.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Read, 1 run, driven uppishly but safely to the long-on region

49.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Broad, no run, comes down the wicket and has a whoosh, but misses that completely

England have had their huddle and the batsmen are on their way to the middle and Jon Lewis has been tossed the new ball.

6.10pm So that's that then. England have reached 271 for 9, which they'll be happy with as they set about trying to bring the series level. Now Pakistan have the task of batting under the floodlights - the shadows are lengthening on the pitch already. Stay with us to find out if they can hunt down that score. After the break it will be Martin to kick off proceedings. Ooh, but before he does, a quick Naved update - after hurting his hip crashing into the boundary, he's just confirmed he feels much better.

End of over 50 (9 runs) England 271/9
SCJ Broad    0* (1b)      Naved-ul-Hasan    10-1-57-4
CMW Read    21* (20b 2x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    10-1-59-2
