50.1

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, FOUR, banged in short, but the ball slowed a touch and Cook made no mistake in dispatching that to the square leg boundary.

50.2

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, no run

50.3

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, no run, looked for a quick single after steering to midwicket but settled for the dot.

50.4

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, no run, better ball: full, on the off-stick and forcing the defensive

50.5

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, no run, another good ball, good line; just a dot.

50.6

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, no run

A good over: Pakistan’s bowlers are still working hard as the pitch is flattening out a touch. Cook and Collingwood are making serene progress, though.

Speaking of different - Shahid Afridi is back into the attack.

And now for something completely different: a shameless plug.

It may be too late for Jon Lewis to make it into England’s team, but it’s not too late for you to take part in the England v Pakistan edition of the Cricinfo Fantasy League game. And, as if that were not excitement enough, my lovely colleague in marketing Andy Berks tells me to tell you that “you can win a whole host of great prizes”. Brilliant! The reassuring Mr Berks then adds: “Registration is open throughout the series so don't worry if you didn't manage to sign up before the start of play.” Phew. “Simply go to http://cricinfo.fantasyleague.com” Do it.

Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, no run

51.2

Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, no run, pitched on off, forced a forward defensive.

51.3

Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, no run, a touch more room on the off, but Collingwood can’t get enough purchse on his cut shot.

51.4

Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, no run, better from Afridi who darts that one in; no spin, but a bit of drift.

51.5

Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, no run, again Afridi gets the ball to pitch in an uncomfortable area and Collingwood jams his bat down

51.6

Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, 1 run, forced through midwicket.

Abdul Razzaq to Collingwood, no run

54.4

Abdul Razzaq to Collingwood, FOUR, Ugly but controlled hoick square, but Collingwood won’t care about how it looked; that's four

54.5

Abdul Razzaq to Collingwood, FOUR, slightly shorter, slightly quicker but more elegant from Collingwood, who was quickly on to that.

54.6

Abdul Razzaq to Collingwood, no run, huge appeal for an inside edge. A big noise, which turns out to be the pad – great decision from umpire Taufel; the Pakistan team were understandably appealing loudly for that one.

57.1

Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, 1 run, drifted in, guided behind square to bring up the 150-partnership for Collingwood and Cook. They shake hands. Bravo, chaps.

57.2

Shahid Afridi to Cook, 1 run, Cook nurdles that through midwicket, but it’s uppish, enough to generate an ‘Ooh’ or two. Finds space, though.

57.3

Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, no run

57.4

Shahid Afridi to Collingwood, 1 run, glided to square and the pressure England are exerting is building. An MCC member makes himself useful by moving the sightscreen for Cook. Good man.

It'll be Umar Gul to continue

OK, so we’re ready for the final session. Pakistan have a team huddle during which Inzamam is probably whispering the plan: “Take wickets; don’t drop catches.” It seems simple enough, but they failed to do just that during the afternoon session. Let’s see what they can do now.

Andrew McGlashan's bulletin will be up in just a few minutes, so check that out. And in the meantime, have a look at our photo index or send us an email.

A stifling over from Kaneria, but not posing too many problems just then. And that’s tea. Without doubt that was England’s session – they didn’t lose a wicket and moved to 242 for 3, with Cook and Collingwood bringing up their 150 partnership. More missed chances for Pakistan to think about during tea.

End of over 59 (maiden) England 242/3

    • PD Collingwood 77 (107b 10x4)
    • AN Cook 68 (157b 7x4)
    • Danish Kaneria 16-1-42-0
    • Shahid Afridi 5-0-16-0
59.1

Umar Gul to Cook, FOUR, oooh, first ball after tea and Cook edges it wide of second slip…where a third slip would have been. Good start by Gul; a moral victory, if nothing else

59.2

Umar Gul to Cook, 1 run

59.3

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, wide of off-stump, Collingwood shimmies across and defends on the back foot

59.4

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, even wider, and slower, batsman not interested

59.5

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, wider still, although not “officially” an umpire’s wide

59.6

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, fuller and straighter, a touch nippier too, and Collingwood jams his bat down on it

Here comes Kaneria

Thanks to Jenny for her fine stint in the commentary chair before tea. It'll be me for the next hour, and then back to the venerable Miss Thompson again.

End of over 60 (5 runs) England 247/3

60.1

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, good line, defended with ease

60.2

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, outside offstump, drifting into the batsman's pads and turning further still to the leg-side, defended soldily by Cook

60.3

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, same again from Kaneria, and Cook is up to it

60.4

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run

60.5

Danish Kaneria to Cook, 1 run, tickles one which didn’t turn quite so much onto the leg-side for a quick, and well-run, single

60.6

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, no run

End of over 61 (1 run) England 248/3

    • Danish Kaneria 17-1-43-0
    • Umar Gul 14-1-64-1
61.1

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, good pace from Gul, rising on Cook who got up on his toes to defend it into the covers

61.2

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, same line outside offstump from Gul, Cook doesn’t move his feet this time though, poking his bat rather ungainly (but effectively) at a short delivery

61.3

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, excellent length this time, again Cook refusing to take a big stride forward but nevertheless he clearly has an excellent eye – ala Trescothick – blocking the ball out into the off-side

61.4

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, defended off the back foot

61.5

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, half a shout, Cook inside edges onto his pads - almost squeezed through his legs and onto his stumps. Fine over so far

61.6

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, straying slightly down the leg side, nudged safely away

End of over 62 (maiden) England 248/3

    • AN Cook 74 (170b 8x4)

62.1

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, no run, defended without alarm, looks increasingly settled Collingwood

62.2

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, 1 run

62.3

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run

62.4

Danish Kaneria to Cook, 1 run, swept without any great power to deep midwicket, and that’s the 250 up for England

62.5

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, 1 run, 5 cuts hard into the deep, a quick single scampered as is Collingwood’s wont

62.6

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run

End of over 63 (3 runs) England 251/3

    • AN Cook 75 (173b 8x4)
    • PD Collingwood 79 (115b 10x4)

    • Umar Gul 15-2-64-1
63.1

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run

63.2

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, gone, out, no! Dropped! Leg-cutter, outside edge straight to Kamran Akmal – dreadful shot from Collingwood I might add – and, somehow, Akmal shelled it. Deafening silence from the captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, and not much more being said from the slips. Ooh, that’s a shocker

63.3

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, that’s better, a solid forward defence

63.4

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, dropped to the off-side

63.5

Umar Gul to Collingwood, 1 no ball, well timed by Collingwood, a no-ball too, but straight to the man at cover

63.5

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, kept a bit low, very low actually, almost trapped him between the knees

63.6

Umar Gul to Collingwood, 3 runs, intelligent cricket from Collingwood, waiting for the bad ball – which has been the story of the day, really, as far as Pakistan’s bowling goes – and he whips it through midwicket

End of over 64 (4 runs) England 255/3

    • PD Collingwood 82 (122b 10x4)
    • AN Cook 75 (173b 8x4)
    • Umar Gul 16-2-68-1
    • Danish Kaneria 18-1-46-0
64.1

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, no run, batsman comes forward, meets the ball and dampens the spin well

64.2

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, no run, straighter this time, perhaps the top-spinner, Collingwood again meets the ball with a solid bat

64.3

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, no run, big appeal from Kaneria and Akmal as Collingwood inside-edges onto his pad

64.4

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, no run

64.5

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, no run, on middle-and-off stump, turning away a touch, defended solidly. Five dot balls so far

64.6

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, 1 run, bah, again the maiden over is spoilt as Collingwood squirts one to the leg-side and Cook is quick to react and run through for a single

Pakistan are looking a bit flat now, a bit fed-up. Who can blame them, though, after that drop? It was a classic clanger

End of over 65 (1 run) England 256/3

    • PD Collingwood 83 (128b 10x4)
    • AN Cook 75 (173b 8x4)
    • Danish Kaneria 19-1-47-0
    • Umar Gul 16-2-68-1
65.1

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, outside off-stump, left well alone - no need to play at those

65.2

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, wider still, left alone

65.3

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, Gul straightens his line, forcing the batsman to defend

65.4

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, wider still, this is far from inspiring from Gul – but he did at least induce Collingwood, no doubt now fed up with the wide bowling, to flail at it

65.5

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, classically driven along the ground but straight to the cover fielder

65.6

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, and it’s a maiden. Gul’s clearly trying to get the ball to reverse but it’s not quite working for him yet

End of over 66 (maiden) England 256/3

    • PD Collingwood 83 (134b 10x4)
    • AN Cook 75 (173b 8x4)
    • Umar Gul 17-3-68-1
    • Danish Kaneria 19-1-47-0
66.1

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run

66.2

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, ooh, so close! Around the wicket, Kaneria induces Cook into driving at a fiercely spun legbreak and it nearly fizzles its way onto his stumps

66.3

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, defended with greater confidence this time, as Cook gets a good stride in

66.4

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, and again, Kaneria toying with Cook here but he’s up to the challenge, planting his right foot down the pitch

66.5

Danish Kaneria to Cook, 1 run, slightly quicker and the batsman whips it past the bowler, whose acrobatic dive can’t quite stop them from nicking a single. Smart cricket from Cook

66.6

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, no run, Collingwood hammers it back to Kaneria who, this time, stops it

End of over 67 (1 run) England 257/3

    • PD Collingwood 83 (135b 10x4)
    • AN Cook 76 (178b 8x4)
    • Danish Kaneria 20-1-48-0
    • Umar Gul 17-3-68-1
67.1

Umar Gul to Cook, 1 run, too easy for Cook who, despite his youthful air, will whip leg-side gifts all day

67.2

Umar Gul to Collingwood, 1 run, wide, again, and Collingwood times it to backward point who fumbles it ungraciously. Collingwood not moving his feet, though, to the short ball

67.3

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, batsman pokes at one outside offstump

67.4

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, much better from Gul, fuller and straighter, forcing Cook to decide whether to leave it well alone or, as he did, defend it with care

67.5

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, generates a touch more bounce, with one rising on Cook but he uses his height to good effect to ride the bounce and play it competently into the covers

67.6

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, ah, touch of reverse-swing there to end the over

Run-rate has dipped, Pakistan keeping it tight - although aided by some wide bowling

End of over 68 (2 runs) England 259/3

    • AN Cook 77 (183b 8x4)
    • PD Collingwood 84 (136b 10x4)
    • Umar Gul 18-3-70-1
    • Danish Kaneria 20-1-48-0

Kaneria around the wicket to the right-hander

68.1

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, 1 run, neat clip off his legs to long-on

68.2

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, chips it confidently down the ground

68.3

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, again punch-drives it without much power

68.4

Danish Kaneria to Cook, 2 runs, better shot from Cook who drives with a greater flourish and follow-through, earning a quick single

68.5

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, good thinking from Kaneria, tossing it high and wide of Cook’s off-stump who plays and misses off the back foot, attempting to cut it. Probably lucky he did miss that, as first slip would have been interested

68.6

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run

End of over 69 (3 runs) England 262/3

    • AN Cook 79 (188b 8x4)
    • PD Collingwood 85 (137b 10x4)
    • Danish Kaneria 21-1-51-0
    • Umar Gul 18-3-70-1
69.1

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, moved away slightly from the batsman, Collingwood still refusing to move his feet – perhaps wary of the nip-backer from Gul

69.2

Umar Gul to Collingwood, FOUR, Gul drops it short and Collingwood was remarkably quick to pounce on it, pulling it well in front of square with tremendous power for a fine four

69.3

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, fuller and quicker ball by Gul, one which just – at the last second – threatened to move away from Collingwood who jams his bat down effectively, albeit ungainly

69.4

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, an ugly jammer-downer again from Collingwood, but he kept it out and that’s all that matters

69.5

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, full toss, smeared straight to extra cover

Short extra cover moved in

69.6

Umar Gul to Collingwood, 2 runs, yet again it’s simply too short from Gul and Collingwood, who is so well set now, simply rocks back and cuts it past extra cover for two

End of over 70 (6 runs) England 268/3

    • PD Collingwood 91 (143b 11x4)
    • AN Cook 79 (188b 8x4)
    • Umar Gul 19-3-76-1
    • Danish Kaneria 21-1-51-0
70.1

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, flatter and quicker, Cook up to the challenge meeting the ball and knocking it down

70.2

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, huge appeal from Kaneria, a slower-ball, well flighted, but the ball hit Cook’s pad

70.3

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, googly! This is great entertainment (for us, if no one else). Kaneria mixing it up – he’s clearly a little rattled, and Cook read it very well.

70.4

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, legbreak this time, Cook defends it with a pleasing solidity.

70.5

Danish Kaneria to Cook, no run, wider of the crease, doesn’t turn much this time and Cook blocks it out

70.6

Danish Kaneria to Cook, 1 run, he really ripped that one, a fizzer turning out of the rough but the batsman rocked back and cut it confidently

It's Mohammad Sami into the attack, replacing Umar Gul

Mohammad Sami to Cook, no run, left alone

71.2

Mohammad Sami to Cook, 1 run, wide delivery, Cook thick-edges it to third man

71.3

Mohammad Sami to Collingwood, no run, that’s better from Sami, straighter and quicker forcing Collingwood into playing a shot

71.4

Mohammad Sami to Collingwood, 1 run, cut to third man, bowler lets himself down

71.5

Mohammad Sami to Cook, no run, fine shot for no run, Cook driving authoritatively to mid-off

71.6

Mohammad Sami to Cook, no run, DROPPED, oh dear oh dear this is atrocious and rather inexplicable. Sami found a touch of movement which Cook feasted his eyes upon, edging him hard straight to Imran Farhat, the lone slip. Quite why Inzamam-ul-Haq isn’t there, we can’t tell you. That was yet another poor miss, and Cook again benefits (dropped on 0, in the 40s and now in the 80s)

73.2

Mohammad Sami to Cook, no run, on the off-stump, moving back a touch into the left-handed Cook who pushes hard at it

73.3

Mohammad Sami to Cook, no run, super ball forces a poor shot from Cook who nervously hangs his bat out to dry at a quick awayswinger from Sami

73.4

Mohammad Sami to Cook, no run, he nearly left it, but decided to half-cut it (tricky one to describe)

Poor old Imran Farhat is chuntering away to himself about his dropped catch in the previous over. Shaking his head, rubbing his nose and generally looking rather peeved at his lot

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, no run, absolute ripper, a classical legbreak dipping into Collingwood and fizzing away. Beautiful bowling

Here we go. Players are out on the pitch, and England are very well set. Mohammad Sami, currently wicketless, to open the bowling.

10.40BST The early morning clouds have all but been blown away by a strong westerly breeze, and we’re all set for another rain-free and sunny day. Danish Kaneria was getting prodigious turn yesterday, and the pitch this morning – on what is only the second day – is already showing signs of wear. But it remains a good, evenly balanced pitch; a little bit of movement for the bowlers but a true surface for the batsmen to feel confident enough to play their shots. 20 minutes to go, and the site is slowly creaking its way back from the dead, so we’re nearly ready. Enough of my musings though; read Andrew McGlashan’s preview of the second day’s play and join us shortly for live commentary. Do email us your thoughts, too.

09.40BST Good morning and welcome to our coverage of the second day's play. We’ve had a major problem with the site which no doubt you’ve noticed, but our technical staff are manically trying to sort it out and it should all be updated shortly. The homepage isn’t working properly yet, but the series page is – so check that out. You may not have seen Andrew Miller’s or Osman Samiuddun’s verdicts – and you might have missed Andrew McGlashan’s bulletin too, so check those out too in the meantime. Aside from the gremlins on the internet, the weather here is fine and sunny although cooler and much breezier than yesterday, and decidedly less muggy. Play will be starting on time and we’ll have news from the ground shortly.

And that’s stumps. This has been, without doubt, England’s day. After losing three quick wickets, Collingwood and Cook survived a couple of dropped catches to lift them past 300 with a century each. Pakistan’s depleted bowling attack have done well, and bowled tight lines in the evening in particular, but they will be rueing some misses in the field. Thanks for joining us today and do tune in tomorrow. If you’re keen to read about the whole day’s play then do tune in around 18.30BST when Andrew McGlashan’s take on events will be ready to roll. And as ever, email us your thoughts. We'll be back tomorrow at 10.00BST and hope you'll join us then.

91.3

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, batsman flirts with the idea of cutting this wide delivery before shouldering arms. A useful sighter. No swing or seam movement for Gul yet

91.4

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, Collingwood gets on top of this and, with a high left elbow, punches it straight to cover without any timing

91.5

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, useful delivery, the leg-cutter, passing by Collingwood’s outside edge shaping away

Mohammad Sami to Cook, FOUR, lovely, elegant drive from Cook – fuller and wider from Sami, and Cook pushes it confidently past gully for the first four of the day. Disappointingly wide from Sami.

New ball taken

92.5

Mohammad Sami to Cook, no run, not interested in that, far too wide

92.6

Mohammad Sami to Cook, no run, and again, no need to even think about playing those

93.2

Umar Gul to Collingwood, FOUR, takes the splice of Collingwood’s bat, playing it with soft hands to edge the ball between third slip and gully. No third man

Out comes third slip, and moves down to third man

93.3

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, straight, on middle-and-off, Collingwood jams down on it and defends

93.4

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, ah, good one from Gul, holds its line and Collingwood doesn’t quite move his feet. Bit of a wishy washy waft there, passes his outside edge

93.5

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, big shout from Gul, less so from Akmal, as the ball jags back sharply at Collingwood to rap him on his pads. Umpire Steve Bucknor shakes his head

93.6

Umar Gul to Collingwood, FOUR, and Gul lets himself down here, overpitching and drifting down the leg-side, Collingwood flicks it confidently past long-on for an easy boundary. Super shot, that.

94.2

Mohammad Sami to Cook, no run, just short of a good length and wide enough to allow Cook a sighter

94.3

Mohammad Sami to Cook, no run, still too wide; Sami’s intention is clear enough, but Cook so far refuses to be enticed into playing at these

94.4

Mohammad Sami to Cook, no run, much better – fuller, attacking the stumps and forcing Cook to defend them. That’s more like it from Sami.

94.5

Mohammad Sami to Cook, OUT, GONE! Crackerjack from Sami, full, straight and quick, swung back into the left-handed Cook who was too late on it. Cook gone for 105 – terrific start for Pakistan

AN Cook b Mohammad Sami 105 (327m 279b 10x4 0x6) SR: 37.63

Now then, this opens things up. Here comes Ian Bell, England's No. 6. England still handily placed, but this new ball has started to bend markedly.

94.6

Mohammad Sami to Bell, FOUR, ooh dear oh dear, that was a shade lucky. Bell’s iron feet fail to move, and an uncertain poke at the ball sends it wide of the slip cordon down to the vacant third man boundary

95.3

Umar Gul to Collingwood, FOUR, rubbish from Gul, too full and drifting down leg-side. You can’t bowl there. Collingwood’s bread-and-butter, milking it through midwicket and timing it superbly. Lovely shot that.

95.5

Umar Gul to Collingwood, no run, yikes, moves down the slope and almost cuts Collingwood in half, raps him on the pads

96.2

Mohammad Sami to Bell, no run, too short – no need for Pakistan to get over-excited here, they must pitch the ball up and look for the outside edge

96.3

Mohammad Sami to Bell, FOUR, and there we go, drifts down leg and Bell whips him away. Far too easy, no pressure for the new batsman&

96.4

Mohammad Sami to Bell, no run, Bell swings and misses to a fuller ball. That’s more like it, Sami; ball swings away a touch

96.5

Mohammad Sami to Bell, no run, quicker (87mph) but, yet again, too short, too wide and Bell watches it zip past

96.6

97.1

Umar Gul to Bell, FOUR, poor cricket from Pakistan. Collingwood tucks one off his legs to deep midwicket and Danish Kaneria, not the quickest in the outfield, gets his feet in a tangle and knocks it in the back of the net for four

And the ball, after going over the boundary "rope" has now got lost in what can only be described as a piece of trunking. Part of Lord's plumbing, I suppose. And they're now wiggling the tube, desperately trying to find a red cricket ball. Surely it can't be that hard, it must be in there somewhere. Ah! There it is.

97.2

Umar Gul to Bell, 1 run, on Bell’s middle stump, as it were, and he whips it down to fine leg for an easy single

97.6

98.2

Mohammad Sami to Bell, 2 runs, shorter ball, punched off the back foot and that’s England’s 350 up. Marvellous effort, that

98.3

Mohammad Sami to Bell, FOUR, ahh, that’s a crowd-pleaser. And a Cricinfo pleaser too. Cries of “ahhh” as Bell cover-drives with consummate elegance. Lovely shot – shot of the day, in fact

98.4
