Pakistan tour of England and Scotland, 2006 / Commentary

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150  | Overs 151-200

Here come the umpires, followed by Andrew Strauss and Marcus Trescothick, skipping out. Still rather cloudy. Ooh it's all far too exciting.

Younis Khan is out of today's match with a knee problem, as is Shoaib Malik. Sorry for not mentioning it earlier - and thanks for the gazillion emails to keep us on our toes.

Don't forget to keep an eye on Andrew McGlashan's bulletin, updated throughout the day. Ah, Andrew Miller - our esteemed, venerable (etc) UK Editor - tells me Monty Panesar and Geraint Jones have wandered beneath the media centre, headed straight for the nets. Jones could do with a few runs, to say the least...especially with Chris Read, the man who he replaced in 2004, bashing runs like there's no tomorrow.

So, not long to go now. Although England have won the toss and chosen to bat, it's decidedly muggy and cloudy at Lord's. It'll be me, Will Luke and Jenny Thompson, taking you through proceedings which we hope you'll enjoy and find useful. Do send us an email with any comments, or even a "Well done, chaps!" message, if you so wish.

10.30 Inzamam-ul-Haq called heads and it came down tails. Andrew Strauss has chosen to bat. Here's the Pakistan team:

1 Salman Butt, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Faisal Iqbal, 4 Mohammad Yousuf, 5 Inzamam-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Shahid Afridi, 7 Abdul Razzaq 8 Kamran Akmal (wk), 9 Mohammad Sami, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Danish Kaneria

It's all getting very, very exciting. I've just taken one for the team and made the first cup of tea of the day. One down, nine to go. And lo! Jenny Thompson has arrived.

10.20 Hoggard's been passed fit - here is the England team. News of Pakistan to follow.

1 Marcus Trescothick, 2 Andrew Strauss (capt), 3 Alastair Cook, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Ian Bell, 7 Geraint Jones (wk), 8 Liam Plunkett, 9 Matthew Hoggard, 10 Steve Harmison, 11 Monty Panesar

10.05am It's looking like Hoggard will be playing. But, more excitingly, is the news that there was a bit of a stand-off between the two camps. Pakistan wanted to bowl on the same strip England's bowlers were practising on...and they were told to clear off, in no uncertain terms. No evidence of any fist-fights or Zidane moments yet.

9.55am With 65 minutes until the first ball is bowled, Hoggard's participation is still up in the air. He's in deep discussion with the assistant England coach Matthew Maynard, and Andrew Strauss, out in the middle. It seems to be his ability to take fierce return catches which is causing the most concern. If he can't play, it'll almost certainly be Gloucestershire's Jon Lewis (never knowingly underbowled) in his place.

9.45am Good morning and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the first Test at Lord's between England and Pakistan. It's rather cloudy here, and humid to boot, which may influence the toss (which we're expecting in about 30 minutes). So then, it's been a mixed build-up for both teams in recent weeks. Pakistan have done their utmost to match England in the injury stakes: Mohammad Asif is out of today's Test but Mohammad Sami has been passed fit. Matthew Hoggard, whose hand was trodden on by Tim Bresnan's spikes earlier in the week, is currently in the indoor school testing out his injured right hand. We'll have news on his participation shortly, we hope. In the meantime have a read of Andrew McGlashan's splendid preview of the Test. It's not quite a full house here at Cricinfo yet. We're still awaiting the arrival of Jenny Thompson, with whom I'll be sharing today's commentary. More news of the toss and anything else we can find shortly.

0.2

Mohammad Sami to Trescothick, no run, fuller, swung back prodigiously to Trescothick who left it well alone

0.5

Mohammad Sami to Trescothick, 1 no ball, swung back late to the left-hander, no ball

0.5

Mohammad Sami to Trescothick, FOUR, wider one from Sami, shorter too, and bounced onto Trescothick who cleverly got on top of it playing it down to third man for four.

Confident start by Trescothick and England. Here's Umar Gul

0.6

Mohammad Sami to Trescothick, FOUR, driven on the up through cover, confident shot that. In the air for a while, but perfectly safe. Good start for England.

End of over 1 (9 runs) England 9/0
ME Trescothick    8* (7b 2x4)      Mohammad Sami    1-0-9-0
AJ Strauss    0* (0b)

1.1

Umar Gul to Strauss, no run, useful start from Gul, ball cut away slightly from Strauss who just got his bat down on it. It’s moving around here

1.2

Umar Gul to Strauss, no run, defended watchfully

1.3

Umar Gul to Strauss, 5 wides, ooh dear, ball just about hit the cut trip, Kamran Akmal had no chance, down to third man for five runs

1.3

Umar Gul to Strauss, no run, better from Gul, fuller and straighter, ball bending in the air back to the left-handed Strauss who watched it sail pass to Akmal

1.4

Umar Gul to Strauss, no run, defended solidly with a pleasingly straight bat

1.5

Umar Gul to Strauss, no run, just short of a good length, outside off stump – surprising bounce, Strauss leaves well alone

1.6

Umar Gul to Strauss, no run, cut back sharply into, well, Strauss’ nether regions. Between the knees, shall we say. Oh dear, we’ve only had two overs and Strauss is already hunched over. Why is it so funny?

End of over 2 (5 runs) England 14/0
AJ Strauss    0* (6b)      Umar Gul    1-0-5-0
ME Trescothick    8* (7b 2x4)      Mohammad Sami    1-0-9-0

2.2

Mohammad Sami to Trescothick, no run, quicker, wider, left alone

2.3

Mohammad Sami to Trescothick, no run, defended off the back foot, solidly

2.4

Mohammad Sami to Trescothick, no run, prodigious swing back into Trescothick, well left

2.5

Mohammad Sami to Trescothick, no run, quicker ball into his pads

2.6

Mohammad Sami to Trescothick, no run, easily left alone - good over, the first maiden

End of over 3 (maiden) England 14/0
ME Trescothick    8* (13b 2x4)      Mohammad Sami    2-1-9-0
AJ Strauss    0* (6b)      Umar Gul    1-0-5-0

3.1

Umar Gul to Strauss, no run, off-cutter and swings further away from the batsman to the wicketkeeper

3.2

Umar Gul to Strauss, no run, that’s a cracker – off-cutter, played and missed. Nervous start for Strauss

3.3

Umar Gul to Strauss, FOUR, too short, Strauss paddles him off the back foot behind square for four

3.4

Umar Gul to Strauss, no run, better from Gul, straighter, attacking the batsman’s off-stump

3.5

Umar Gul to Strauss, no run, too wide, cut away prodigiously again but Strauss had no trouble leaving it well alone. Decent bounce, though, again

3.6

Umar Gul to Strauss, 1 no ball, better this time, fuller and straighter forcing Strauss to defend it carefully…but a no-ball

3.6

Umar Gul to Strauss, 3 runs, better length but drifting down leg-side, Strauss whips it through midwicket easily. Wayward over

End of over 4 (8 runs) England 22/0
AJ Strauss    7* (13b 1x4)      Umar Gul    2-0-13-0
ME Trescothick    8* (13b 2x4)      Mohammad Sami    2-1-9-0

4.1

Mohammad Sami to Strauss, no run, well wide of Strauss’ off-stump. Conditions suit the bowlers here, but they’re bowling too short

4.2

Mohammad Sami to Strauss, FOUR, ooh there we go, fuller, enticing Strauss into a drive and he edges it past a diving second slip. No chance for him – but where’s the third slip gone?

4.3

Mohammad Sami to Strauss, no run, defended off the back foot

4.4

Mohammad Sami to Strauss, no run

4.5

Mohammad Sami to Strauss, FOUR, driven elegantly to the extra-cover boundary, lovely shot – super, in fact. The first authoritative boundary of the morning

4.6

Mohammad Sami to Strauss, no run

End of over 5 (8 runs) England 30/0
AJ Strauss    15* (19b 3x4)      Mohammad Sami    3-1-17-0

5.2

Umar Gul to Trescothick, 1 run, drifting down leg, flicked to fine-leg for a single

5.3

Umar Gul to Strauss, 4 byes, left alone by Strauss, ball swung prodigiously after it pitched. Poor old Akmal had no chance

5.4

Umar Gul to Strauss, FOUR, poor ball, he’s all over the shop at the moment is Gul, flicked confidently by Strauss through midwicket

Things are going Strauss's way this morning, in his first Test as England captain

5.5

Umar Gul to Strauss, FOUR, more dross from Gul, this is poor bowling. Short, wide of off-stump and Strauss has oodles of time to pull him powerfully for four

5.6

Umar Gul to Strauss, 1 run, well, better line and length, but the batteries of Gul’s radar need replacing. He’s not sure of his length; when he does find it, he generates a lot of bounce, but he looks nervous and tense here

End of over 6 (14 runs) England 44/0
AJ Strauss    24* (23b 5x4)      Umar Gul    3-0-23-0
ME Trescothick    9* (15b 2x4)      Mohammad Sami    3-1-17-0

6.3

Mohammad Sami to Strauss, no run

6.4

Mohammad Sami to Strauss, 3 runs

6.5

Mohammad Sami to Trescothick, 1 run, confidently nudged into the deep by Strauss

6.6

Mohammad Sami to Strauss, no run, rather wasted bouncer, sails over Strauss’s head

48 runs in 30 minutes – not bad going from England. Seven fours, too, which rather sums up the bowling thus far. In fact, this beats anything England did in the one-dayers!

End of over 7 (4 runs) England 48/0
AJ Strauss    27* (28b 5x4)      Mohammad Sami    4-1-21-0

7.4

7.5

Umar Gul to Trescothick, 1 run, flicked off his legs for a single

AJ Strauss    27* (29b 5x4)      Umar Gul    4-0-24-0
ME Trescothick    11* (21b 2x4)      Mohammad Sami    4-1-21-0

8.1

Mohammad Sami to Trescothick, 3 runs, off the back foot, punches this in true Trescothick style although without any real power. 50 partnership from just 51 balls

Round the wicket now

8.2

8.4

Mohammad Sami to Strauss, no run, defended off the back foot

8.5

Mohammad Sami to Strauss, no run, well wide, a little drifter – a teaser – but Strauss isn’t interested. I’m dying for another cup of tea

8.6

Mohammad Sami to Strauss, 2 no balls, wide of off-stump for the previous ball, and now he drifts down the leg-side. The Lord’s slope’s playing tricks again for these bowlers

8.6

Mohammad Sami to Trescothick, 1 run, last ball sharp single, nudged to the off side

End of over 9 (6 runs) England 55/0
ME Trescothick    15* (23b 2x4)      Mohammad Sami    5-1-27-0
AJ Strauss    27* (34b 5x4)      Umar Gul    4-0-24-0

9.1

Umar Gul to Trescothick, no run, hit with power off the back foot (again) straight to cover point

9.3

Umar Gul to Trescothick, no run, punched straight to cover

9.5

Umar Gul to Trescothick, 1 no ball

9.5

Umar Gul to Trescothick, no run, good bouncer, good pace – well left alone by Trescothick who weaved out of the way like the boxer that he isn’t

9.6

Umar Gul to Trescothick, no run

Abdul Razzaq into the attack now replacing Sami

End of over 10 (1 run) England 56/0
ME Trescothick    15* (30b 2x4)      Umar Gul    5-0-25-0
AJ Strauss    27* (34b 5x4)      Mohammad Sami    5-1-27-0

10.1

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, 2 runs, he starts with a leg-side drifter which Strauss punches through midwicket. Oh dear, bit of a fumble there&

10.2

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, no run, tighter line, left alone

10.3

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, 1 run, guess what? Another drifter down the leg-side and another easily-run single

10.4

Abdul Razzaq to Trescothick, 1 run, neat awareness from Trescothick. Less aware were Pakistan who look a little shell shocked – good quick single

10.5

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, no run, cuts back sharply into Strauss, half a shout from the bowler

10.6

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, no run, wide of off-stump

No consistency from Pakistan's bowlers this morning. And still no refreshments for Will, either

End of over 11 (4 runs) England 60/0
AJ Strauss    30* (39b 5x4)      Abdul Razzaq    1-0-4-0
ME Trescothick    16* (31b 2x4)      Umar Gul    5-0-25-0

11.1

Umar Gul to Trescothick, no run

11.2

Umar Gul to Trescothick, no run

11.3

Umar Gul to Trescothick, no run, cuts back sharply, bounces on Trescothick too, huge shout from Akmal and the bowler. Looks like it his shirt or trousers, or both, but nowhere near the bat. Good ball though. Great decision from Steve Bucknor

11.4

Umar Gul to Trescothick, no run

Fine ball from Gul, though, whose radar's batteries have clearly been replaced

11.5

Umar Gul to Trescothick, OUT, but he’s gone now, plays away from his body – a willy, wally waft outside off-stump, gets a thin outside edge straight to Akmal. Pakistan strike

ME Trescothick c †Kamran Akmal b Umar Gul 16 (53m 36b 2x4 0x6) SR: 44.44

Here comes Alastair Cook. More importantly, Jenny's taken one for the team and is making us tea - which makes a change, frankly, as it's usually me on tea duty.

11.6

Umar Gul to Cook, no run

End of over 12 (wicket maiden) England 60/1
AN Cook    0* (1b)      Umar Gul    6-1-25-1
AJ Strauss    30* (39b 5x4)      Abdul Razzaq    1-0-4-0

12.1

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, no run, moves away from the left-hander. Razzaq ought to know Lord’s well having played for Middlesex here in the past

12.2

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, no run, ooh, well, Strauss was in control of that but it falls just short of gully

12.3

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, no run

12.4

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, no run, this is good from Razzaq, bowling full and swinging it away from Strauss who is carefully, watchfully, banging his bat down on the ball.

12.5

Abdul Razzaq to Strauss, OUT, GONE! Hello, massive, etc. He was done by the previous ball. This one held its line, clever bit of bowling, traps him in front. Double strike for Pakistan: “one brings two” as so often happens, particularly when Pakistan are playing

AJ Strauss lbw b Abdul Razzaq 30 (60m 44b 5x4 0x6) SR: 68.18

Here comes KP

Now then now then now then, it's all gone Pete Tong for England. Well not quite, but they were racing along. Two new batsmen at the crease

12.6

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, no run

That's all from me, it's time to hand over to Jenny Thompson who will take over for the next hour. Rock on - over to you, Jen

End of over 13 (wicket maiden) England 60/2
KP Pietersen    0* (1b)      Abdul Razzaq    2-1-4-1

13.1

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, full-faced defensive

13.2

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, strayed down leg

13.3

Umar Gul to Cook, 1 run, dropped. Imran Farhat missed an easy chance at second slip after Cook was squared up. It was straight to Inzamam at first slip but an eager Imran dived across and it popped out of his hands. He shakes his finger and his head – that’s the second one he’s put down.

13.4

Umar Gul to Pietersen, 1 run

13.5

Umar Gul to Cook, no run

13.6

Umar Gul to Cook, no run

Great over by Gul there, who should have had a second wicket to his name.

14.2

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, no run, too wide down the off-side to tempt Cook to explore

14.3

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, no run, edge, but no danger; the ball bounces low into the slip region

14.4

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, no run

14.5

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, no run, great delivery moving away from the left-handed Cook, who swings and misses. A good line, there.

14.6

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, no run, a more convincing shot from Cook, who defends solidly.

End of over 15 (1 run) England 63/2
AN Cook    1* (11b)      Abdul Razzaq    3-1-5-1
KP Pietersen    2* (3b)      Umar Gul    7-1-27-1

15.1

Umar Gul to Pietersen, FOUR, Pietersen goes down on one knee and offers a mere flick of a cover-drive which races away

15.2

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, good response. The ball cuts down the hill, tucks Pietersen up and just fails to shave his inside edge on its way through.

15.3

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run

15.4

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, looks to work the ball through mid-wicket, but it just trickles there as he checks the shot.

15.5

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run

15.6

Umar Gul to Pietersen, 2 runs, squeezed to mid-on and forced the misfield. Sami came in quickly from mid-on but failed to pick it up.

16.2

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, FOUR, a deliberate press down through the unguarded third-man area, slicing through between slips and gully.

16.3

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, 1 run, short ball; the batsman fails to connect fully with a pull which bounces over to deep backward square leg.

16.4

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, no run

16.5

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, FOUR, Razzaq strays slightly down leg and Pietersen whips that one off his legs with a trademark roll of his wrists

16.6

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, no run, checked cover-drive heading straight to the fielder.

Sami is back for another spell. Let’s see what he can do now, with two new faces to have a dart at.

AN Cook    6* (14b 1x4)      Umar Gul    8-1-33-1

17.1

Mohammad Sami to Cook, 1 run, tries the short one, but Cook has plenty of time to control his pull shot.

17.2

Mohammad Sami to Pietersen, no run, a big theatrical leave from Pietersen as a good-length, but too wide, ball darts through.

17.3

Mohammad Sami to Pietersen, no run, looks to work the ball through mid-wicket, but stops on the shot.

17.4

Mohammad Sami to Pietersen, no run, good length ball, Pietersen just eases it down with a backfoot defensive.

17.5

Mohammad Sami to Pietersen, FOUR, wow. Pietersen lamps a straight drive down into the ground – the ball bounces and clears the bowler. Evidence, if it were needed, of just how firmly KP strikes the ball.

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, no run, beautiful delivery. Moves off the seam on a perfect length; Pietersen was caught in two minds – in the end the ball just misses as it leaves him

18.2

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, FOUR, stands tall and walks forward into an on-drive. Difficult shot made to look easy. Lovely.

18.3

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, no run

18.4

Abdul Razzaq to Pietersen, OUT, the ball came back up the hill and looked to have just shaved off stump - although replays showed it was a good five or six inches too high. Pietersen shouldered arms, while Razzaq tucked into some high-fives. Razzaq had been probing around the off-stump for a while.

18.6

Abdul Razzaq to Cook, 1 run, finds space at extra cover for a comfortable single.

Pakistan will, of course, be delighted with that huge wicket of Pietersen, who walked off shaking his head and may continue to do so when he sees the replays. After a riproaring start, England now have some work to do, with three wickets down before lunch.

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, 2 runs, launched, a tad unconvincingly, over mid-on. Doesn’t quite get hold of it, but clears the fielder easily.

23.5

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, no run, asking the question, there, with wone which darted in, but Collingwood smothers any threat.

23.6

Danish Kaneria to Collingwood, no run, all kinds of things going here. Did Collingwood edge it through to a clasping Akmal? (It looked like it hit his thigh) Was he stumped? (No, his foot was still in the crease) Either way he’s still here as Bucknor is uninterested.

A spicy first over from Kaneria, who is usually a good bet to produce some interest and mix things up a bit.

Danish Kaneria to open the bowling after lunch.

Welcome back. Pakistan are out on the field, and here come the two England batsmen. Don't forget to check out our photo index.

As an interesting first session of the first day at Lord's draws to a close both teams have something to chew on; England got off to a great start but then lost three quick wickets, Pakistan's depleted bowling attack did well and used the swinging conditions, but their fielders spilled too many chances.
