Basil D'Oliveira Trophy - 3rd Test

England v South Africa

South Africa won by 5 wickets

50.1

Morkel to Bell, no run, outside off, lets it go through

50.2

Morkel to Bell, no run, more of the same

50.3

Morkel to Bell, no run, some swing away, and some width, down the channel. Left alone

50.4

Morkel to Bell, FOUR, on the legs, flicked away down the leg side and quickly to the rope. Morkel pauses to consider that delivery, Bell walking well into the shot

50.5

Morkel to Bell, no run, outside off, some swing away, the batsman shoulders arms

50.6

Morkel to Bell, no run, oh, a good yorker which nearly sneaks through. Bell stands agog, in retrospective puzzlement

End of over 51 (4 runs) England 158/4
IR Bell    45* (88b 8x4)      M Morkel    14-2-46-0
PD Collingwood    4* (21b 1x4)      JH Kallis    12-5-22-1

Kallis to Collingwood, OUT, oh, a thick edge and Collingwood goes! He was looking to turn that one to midwicket, and the ball takes a thick snick and it's snapped by the bucket hands at first slip

PD Collingwood c Smith b Kallis 4 (45m 22b 1x4 0x6) SR: 18.18

South Africa are in raptures, they have been having a good day in the field on what is a decent batting track. Collingwood takes the long, slow walk back to the pavilion, with the pressure on him in the second innings now sky high after this failure. In comes Flintoff

51.2

Kallis to Flintoff, no run, defended into the covers, the crowd cheer, just delighted to see Flintoff back

This, remember, is just his second Test in around 18 months

51.3

Kallis to Flintoff, 1 run, clipped off the legs down to fine leg

51.4

Kallis to Bell, no run, played on the front foot

A note on Collingwood: "96 runs in ten first-class innings this season," Andrew says. Nothing else needs to be added.

51.5

Kallis to Bell, 1 run, comes forward and clips a very full delivery off the legs down to fine leg

51.6

52.6

Morkel to Bell, no run, comes in off the seam and is crunched out to the covers on the front foot

Nel to Flintoff, no run, left alone outside off

53.2

Nel to Flintoff, no run, let this one go through on a good length

53.3

Nel to Flintoff, no run, hustled through outside off, Flintoff shoulders arms and lets it go through, then holds the pose for some considerable time

53.4

Nel to Flintoff, no run, some movement away off a good length, and some decent rise too, Nel follows through and follows up with a mock photo shot, then a menacing, yet cheeky, smile

53.5

Nel to Flintoff, 1 wide, big wide outside off and it gets carried further

53.5

Nel to Flintoff, no run, width outside off and carried even further away

53.6

IR Bell    50* (96b 9x4)      M Morkel    15-2-50-0

Ntini back into the attack now. A change of ends for him, he's returning at the Pavilion End and replaces Morkel

54.1

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, comes from wide of the crease, a tactic he favoured in the second Test, and fires it down past the outside edge, angling in tight in the end

54.2

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, on the front foot, defended out to the covers

54.3

Ntini to Flintoff, 1 leg bye, pushed off the legs down to fine leg, and that's ajudged to have come off the pads

54.4

Ntini to Bell, no run, on the back foot, pushed back down in line with off

54.5

Ntini to Bell, OUT, a feather of an edge and Bell goes now! The change (of ends and of bowler) has worked, as he slides the ball in from wide and Bell's tickle, pushing forward, goes through

IR Bell c †Boucher b Ntini 50 (129m 98b 9x4 0x6) SR: 51.02

Boucher throws it up with a broad smile

How South Africa are enjoying this excellent day for them. Big task for Ambrose now

54.6

Ntini to Ambrose, no run, jumps into the line of defence immediately

End of over 55 (1 run, wicket maiden) England 173/6

55.2

Nel to Flintoff, no run, some width and swing away, the batsman shoulders arms and lets it go through

55.3

Nel to Flintoff, no run, pushes it hard down the channel on a good length, the batsman lets it go on

55.4

Nel to Flintoff, no run, outside off, good length, again not much on offer so a leave is the best form of approach

55.5

Nel to Flintoff, no run, defended solidly on the front foot into the covers

55.6

Nel to Flintoff, no run, some zipping swing away from Flintoff who once again lets it go on through

Well then, that's tea on the first day with South Africa firmly in control on a good pitch

End of over 56 (maiden) England 173/6
A Flintoff    4* (18b)      A Nel    14-5-43-3
TR Ambrose    0* (1b)      M Ntini    11-4-41-1

A very warm welcome to you all. Will here, ready to take you through the next hour or so with England in a really sticky mess here. Still - maybe Flintoff can explode

56.1

Ntini to Ambrose, 1 run, short of a length and Ambrose confidently tucks it behind square for a single

56.2

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, Flintoff defends this straight delivery on the back foot

56.3

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, angling into Flintoff who shoulders arms

The big question - is there no other? - is when Flintoff will go big. Because, with tiny Tim Ambrose at the crease, there's not a lot else for him to work with

56.4

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, Flintoff's solid in defence

56.5

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, ooh, a good leave from Flintoff to a slightly fuller ball

56.6

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, again left alone but closer to his off stump this time

End of over 57 (1 run) England 174/6
A Flintoff    4* (23b)      M Ntini    12-4-42-1

57.2

Harris to Ambrose, no run, flighted on the off stump, and Ambrose smothers it

57.3

Harris to Ambrose, no run, ooh that's well bowled, just shorter of a length but Ambrose plays it nicely with soft hands

Fairy soft

57.4

Harris to Ambrose, 1 run, Harris throws his arms up in the air, as he does to every delivery he bowls, as Ambrose clips this leg-side stray through to square leg

Harris v Flintoff

57.5

57.6

Harris to Flintoff, no run, nudged to short-leg

58.2

Ntini to Ambrose, 1 run, nudged around the corner

58.3

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, left alone outside off

58.4

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, that's a very good line, just holding up on Flintoff but, to his credit, he is right behind it and defending it surely

Incidentally, if you need to pop out, stick this in your phone's browser and I can bore you wherever you are in the world. You can't escape cricket's magnetic lure

58.5

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, wide of the crease, Flintoff leaves alone

58.6

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, and it's ignored once more

End of over 59 (1 run) England 176/6

Harris to Ambrose, no run, smothered by tiny Tim

59.5

Harris to Ambrose, no run, blocked on the front foot

59.6

Harris to Ambrose, no run, and it's once again smothered to end a fairly innocuous over

End of over 60 (maiden) England 176/6
TR Ambrose    3* (14b)      PL Harris    5-1-8-0
A Flintoff    4* (29b)      M Ntini    13-4-43-1

60.1

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, neat stroke, powered to mid-on but straight to the fielder. A fuller length from Ntini, but the line wasn't quite right

60.2

Ntini to Flintoff, 3 runs, pulled with reasonable power through midwicket but Nel gives chase and he has legs longer than a motorway, hauling it down in about 10 giant steps to prevent four

I think Nel must be one of my favourite cricketers to watch

60.3

Ntini to Ambrose, no run, angled into Ambrose who blocks off the back foot

60.4

Ntini to Ambrose, no run, Ambrose shuffles across to the off side and tries to flick this to leg but can't get any power in the stroke

60.5

Ntini to Ambrose, no run, blocked off the back foot

60.6

Ntini to Ambrose, no run, a little too wide to trouble Ambrose. Left alone

End of over 61 (3 runs) England 179/6

62.1

Ntini to Ambrose, no run, too wide. Ignored

62.2

Ntini to Ambrose, 2 runs, down the leg side, so Ambrose just tucks it off his hip, the ball flying past the helmetted-and-hirsute Amla at short-leg

62.3

Ntini to Ambrose, no run, a lifter outside off, but Ambrose won't be tempted

62.4

Ntini to Ambrose, no run, too wide and left alone

62.5

Ntini to Ambrose, no run, angling into his legs, Ambrose walks into a straight drive but gets a thick inside edge into his pads. Ntini appeals, demandingly

62.6

Ntini to Ambrose, FOUR, four! An actual boundary, as my mate Dan would say. Short of a length and pulled around the corner

First boundary for 10 overs

End of over 63 (6 runs) England 187/6
TR Ambrose    10* (29b 1x4)      M Ntini    15-4-52-1

63.1

Harris to Flintoff, no run, a quicker one which hurries Flintoff into a defensive

63.2

Here comes Harris. Oh no he doesn't! He couldn't quite get his arm over, so to speak. Here he comes again

63.3

Harris to Flintoff, FOUR, bosh! Take that. Tossed up wider and Flintoff cover-drives this with authority

63.4

Harris to Flintoff, no run, solidly defended

63.5

Harris to Flintoff, no run, defended on the front foot

63.6

Harris to Flintoff, 1 run, turned around the corner

64.3

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, very firmly blocked on the back foot

64.5

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, and Flintoff is forward and defending

64.6

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, nudged out to the off side

End of over 65 (maiden) England 192/6

At last: here's Gunther from the Pavilion End

66.1

Nel to Flintoff, no run, Flintoff stands tall and glides it out to the off side

66.2

Nel to Flintoff, no run, ignored and left alone. Too wide from the bowler

66.3

Nel to Flintoff, no run, left alone outside off

66.4

Nel to Flintoff, no run, excellent delivery which holds its line and beats Flintoff's drive

66.5

Nel to Flintoff, no run, squeezed out to the off side

Nel punches himself on the head in annoyance. Not sure why, but it was the most entertaining thing to happen this session

66.6

Nel to Flintoff, no run, too wide, Flintoff is happy to leave that alone

End of over 67 (maiden) England 196/6
A Flintoff    13* (50b 1x4)      A Nel    15-6-43-3
TR Ambrose    14* (35b 2x4)      PL Harris    8-1-19-0

67.1

Harris to Ambrose, no run, fired into his legs

We have been speculating all day as to why the crowd is so poor and whether it's because of the Wednesday start. Well, Harvey Brant says that isn't so. "The cheapest ticket for this game was an outrageous £55 per day! This subject has been discussed at length for months, and large numbers of regular England fans (including myself) are boycotting this game."

67.2

Harris to Ambrose, 1 run, swept to Ntini at fine-leg

67.3

Harris to Flintoff, no run, Flintoff lunges forward and smothers this good-length delivery on the off stump

67.4

Harris to Flintoff, no run, down the leg side

67.5

Harris to Flintoff, 1 run, on-driven through mid-on who dives over the top of it. McKenzie, I think it was

67.6

Harris to Ambrose, no run, firmly blocked

End of over 68 (2 runs) England 198/6
TR Ambrose    15* (38b 2x4)      PL Harris    9-1-21-0
A Flintoff    14* (53b 1x4)      A Nel    15-6-43-3

Nel to Flintoff, no run, wide of the off stump

68.3

Nel to Flintoff, no run, wide of the off stump and left alone

68.4

Nel to Flintoff, no run, ignored once more by Flintoff

This is real cat-and-mouse stuff out there

68.5

Nel to Flintoff, FOUR, stroked through the off side without great power, but he managed to thread it just past McKenzie who gave up the chase (he seems to be limping with a groin problem, apparently)

68.6

Nel to Flintoff, no run, left alone outside off

End of over 69 (4 runs) England 202/6
A Flintoff    18* (59b 2x4)      A Nel    16-6-47-3

70.1

Nel to Ambrose, no run, solidly blocked off the back foot out to the off side

70.2

Nel to Ambrose, no run, wide of the off stump - no need to touch those

"You mentioned that the cheapest tickets at Edgbaston for a day's cricket were 55 pounds," Luke mentions. "Last year when I attended a day's cricket at Newlands Cape Town we paid less, in Rand! R50 for the day which is about 15 times cheaper with the current exchange rate."

70.3

Nel to Ambrose, no run, a touch tighter this time and Ambrose defends off the back foot

70.4

Nel to Ambrose, no run, defended once more

70.5

Nel to Ambrose, no run, beautifully driven but straight to mid-off

70.6

Nel to Ambrose, no run, beaten by a cracker! An absolute beauty which cuts away from Ambrose at the last minute, and he fished for it a little desperately

End of over 71 (maiden) England 205/6
TR Ambrose    18* (48b 2x4)      A Nel    17-7-47-3

71.6

Harris to Ambrose, no run, blocked

End of over 72 (1 run) England 206/6

72.2

Ntini to Flintoff, no run, defended once more down the line

Kallis back into the attack

73.1

73.3

Kallis to Ambrose, no run, moves away from the batsman, again on a good length

73.4

Kallis to Ambrose, no run, good line and length, left alone on the rise

73.5

Kallis to Ambrose, FOUR, bangs it down with some width outside off, and wristed hard off the back foot past the two slips and gully

Ambrose likes anything with a bit of width

73.6

Kallis to Ambrose, OUT, Kallis has gone right through the defences now, Ambrose squaring behind it and as the ball is planted on a good length, he drives a fat edge back on to the stumps which rattle sickeningly

TR Ambrose b Kallis 22 (73m 59b 3x4 0x6) SR: 37.28

South Africa's day just gets better and better and Kallis is delighted

74.2

Ntini to Flintoff, 1 run, outside off, driven into the covers on the front foot

74.4

Ntini to Sidebottom, no run, back round the wicket, up there on off, defended back down on the front foot

74.5

Ntini to Sidebottom, no run, width outside off, the ball sits up and the batsman lets it go on through

74.6

Ntini to Sidebottom, OUT, Ntini strikes now! Sidebottom didn't hang around long, the swing taking the ball away and the edge carrying on to Boucher behind the stumps

RJ Sidebottom c †Boucher b Ntini 2 (6m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

So, England's woes continue, penny for Flintoff's thoughts right now

76.1

Ntini to Flintoff, SIX, short ball on off and Flintoff that lifts that one away over midwicket bringing some much-needed cheer

Real stand-and-deliver stuff from Flintoff

76.2

Ntini to Flintoff, FOUR, on the front foot now, drills it hard back past the bowler who has to take evasive action as the ball was travelling towards his head

The crowd is loving this mini-flurry, now

76.3

Ntini to Flintoff, 1 run, on the legs now, tucked down to fine leg

76.4

Ntini to Anderson, 1 run, on the legs again, pressed down behind square

76.5

Ntini to Flintoff, OUT, pushed forward and this was always a tight run, Flintoff calling Anderson through and a direct throw runs him out

JM Anderson run out 1 (10m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

A poor call, really, and Anderson, who is more than handy with the bat, is on his way

Ntini to Panesar, 1 run, OUT, on the legs, squeezed down to deep backward square leg and that's really inexcusable - two run-outs in two balls, Paensar not getting back as the throw comes in and Boucher takes the bails off, Panesar failing to ground his bat as he tried to keep Flintoff on strike for the next over

MS Panesar run out 1 (2m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Well, that was pretty average from England at the end, but clinical stuff from South Africa and some great fielding to make the most of their opportunities at the death. As for their bowlers, they have plugged away well on a surface that doesn't look to hold many terrors, and they have used the swing well. England will be kicking themselves for the way they have subsided but all credit to South Africa. An interesting passage of play now before stumps - who would have thought South Africa would be batting today?
