South Africa tour of England, 2008 / Commentary

2.30 pm: Ian Bell and Matt Prior are England's openers. Prior is attempting to re-establish his place in the team so there will be just a little bit of pressure on him. Owais Shah is padded up and will bat at No. 3.

Dale Steyn is opening the bowling for South Africa, running in from over the wicket.

2.03 pm: Kevin Pietersen has won the toss and England will bat.

"I've been on Steve's [Harmison] case for a while now," says Pietersen. "I met him the other day and he was positive about things. We rang him yesterday and said 'do you fancy' it and he said he'd come back."

"We would have batted too," says Smith, who is nursing a worsening tennis elbow. "Maybe it will skid on tonight. If we can bowl well we can put them under pressure."

We're about 15 minutes away from the start. You could spend the time checking out Cricinfo TV. It has Cricinfo Sportscenter and other exclusive videos.

1.40pm Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the first ODI between England and South Africa at Headingley. The recent wet weather has abated for at least a day which is great news after the Twenty20 was washed out at Chester-le-Street.

This match has been given some added spice with last night's late call-up for Steve Harmison, who has come out of one-day retirement. And he has made England's final XI for this game.

England 1 Ian Bell, 2 Matt Prior (wk), Owais Shah, 4 Kevin Pietersen (capt), 5 Andrew Flintoff, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Samit Patel, 8 Luke Wright, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Steve Harmison, 11 James Anderson.

Samit Patel keeps his place after making his debut against Scotland, preferred ahead of Graeme Swann as England's spin option.

We will bring you more news as we get it.

By the way, South Africa are the first team to officially pull out of the Champions Trophy. The decision by CSA, which has asked the ICC to reschedule the tournament, is the first such official statement from a participating nation and precedes the ICC board's teleconference on the issue on Sunday, where a final decision on staging the tournament is expected. Here's South Africa's starting line-up.

South Africa: 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Herschelle Gibbs, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Vernon Philander, 8 Johan Botha, 9 Andre Nel, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Makhaya Ntini.
