NatWest Series [South Africa in England] - 2nd ODI

England v South Africa

England won by 10 wickets (with 215 balls remaining)

It'll be Graeme Smith to take strike against James Anderson. Two slips in place

2.30pm Just a few moments from the start, the players are making their way out. England will be aiming for some early breakthroughs to put pressure on South Africa's middle order again.

2.20pm It's overcast at the ground, but the weather is set fair which is great news for everyone. A full house is expected as people make the most of the last few days of summer.

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the second ODI between England and South Africa from Trent Bridge. I'm Andrew McGlashan and will be taking you through all the action with Will Luke. An excellent performance from the home side gave them a 20-run victory at Headingley, led by the efforts of Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff.

Here's the team news: one change for each side, Paul Collingwood replaces Ravi Bopara for England and Albie Morkel comes in for Vernon Philander for South Africa.

England 1 Ian Bell, 2 Matt Prior (wk), 3 Owais Shah, 4 Kevin Pietersen (capt), 5 Andrew Flintoff, 6 Paul Collingwood, 7 Samit Patel, 8 Luke Wright, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Steve Harmison, 11 James Anderson

South Africa 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Herschelle Gibbs, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Johan Botha, 9 Andre Nel, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Makhaya Ntini

Toss South Africa have won the toss and decided to bat, no surprise in that given it's a day/night match. "Hopefully we can put some pressure on England," says Smith, who also confirms that Albie Morkel isn't 100% fit but South Africa "are ready to push him."

Kevin Pietersen says he has no concerns about chasing under the impressive, permanent floodlights at Trent Bridge.

The decision to leave out Bopara has raised a few eyebrows, the general feeling was that Wright would miss out with Collingwood returning. For all his clear talent, Bopara is having a tough time nailing down his place in the one-day team.

0.1

Anderson to Smith, no run, good line first up, outside off, Smith takes a stride forward and defends to mid-off

0.2

Anderson to Smith, no run, this one nips back from outside off, Smith starts off to leave it then plays very late...half an appeal, but the ball didn't shape back enough

0.3

Anderson to Smith, 1 run, that would have been gone...Smith drops the ball into the off side and sprints off for a single, Bell runs in from cover but can't hit direct. Smith would have been gone by miles

0.4

Anderson to Gibbs, no run, on off stump, defended down to mid-off

0.5

Anderson to Gibbs, no run, angled into leg stump, takes the pad and bobbles behind the stumps...they decline a single after the earlier alarm

HH Gibbs    0* (3b)      JM Anderson    1-0-1-0

Broad to Smith, no run, back of a length, Smith is taken on the top of the leg...and he isn't happy about some movement behind the bowler

3.3

Broad to Gibbs, no run, nice carry outside off as Gibbs leaves this one through to Matt Prior

3.4

Broad to Gibbs, OUT, gone! first breakthrough for England, Gibbs advances down the pitch but Broad dragged his length back and it takes the inside through to Prior as Gibbs tries an ungainly swing

HH Gibbs c †Prior b Broad 10 (14m 15b 2x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

5.6

Broad to Smith, OUT, gone! brilliant catch from Prior, outside edge from Smith and Prior dives one handed in front of Owais Shah at first slip and snaffles a stunner. Sweet moment for Prior after all the talk about his keeping, there were no half measures in that effort.

GC Smith c †Prior b Broad 9 (25m 14b 1x4 0x6) SR: 64.28

South Africa in a spot of bother, both openers gone

7.3

Broad to Kallis, no run, comes half forward and drives up to mid-off

7.5

Broad to Kallis, no run, fuller on middle and off, punched back to Broad who then flicks the ball back to the wicketkeeper

7.6

Broad to Kallis, OUT, gone! Broad is on fire, and England are catching everything...touch of width outside off and Kallis flashes hard, the edge flying to Shah at first slip, taking it nonchalantly to his right

JH Kallis c Shah b Broad 6 (20m 15b 1x4 0x6) SR: 40.00

Anderson to de Villiers, 1 run, full and wide outside off, de Villiers leans into a flashing dive which flies just wide of Collingwood at backward point...he was at full stretch but couldn't quite haul it in

8.5

Anderson to Duminy, FOUR, another edge, this time from Duminy, but it falls short of the slips and splits the gap between Shah and Flintoff

8.6

Anderson to Duminy, FOUR, that's a top shot, a perfect cover drive as Anderson offers a hint of wide and it was a touch full as well...rifles it wide of mid-off to release some of the pressure

And here's Flintoff

A very good morning, afternoon or evening to you all, wherever you may be. And what a spell for Stuart Broad and England - with Steve Harmison and Andrew Flintoff lurking in the wings, too. While we swap over, have a look at our Cricinfo Widgets

10.1

Flintoff to de Villiers, no run, immediately he passes the outside edge, gaining a touch of bounce and movement away from the right hander. Flintoff gives de Villiers a glare

10.2

Flintoff to de Villiers, no run, left alone

10.3

Flintoff to de Villiers, 1 wide, a rare stray down the leg-side - and a wide, the first of the innings

10.3

Flintoff to de Villiers, no run, touch too wide...that could easily have been "called" by the umpire, but Flintoff gets away with it

10.4

Flintoff to de Villiers, no run, back of a length and defended on the back foot

10.5

Flintoff to de Villiers, no run, wide of the off stump, left alone once more

10.6

Flintoff to de Villiers, no run, excellent delivery, cutting back into de Villiers who shouldered arms, and that wasn't far away from his off stump

End of over 11 (1 run) South Africa 37/4 (RR: 3.36)
AB de Villiers    2* (15b)      A Flintoff    1-0-1-0
MV Boucher    0* (4b)      SCJ Broad    5-1-9-4

11.1

Broad to Boucher, no run, ooh that's cut back nastily on Boucher who gets a leading edge out to cover, but it falls safely

Excellent length from Broad

11.2

Broad to Boucher, no run, what a cracker! Lift, bounce, movement - it snapped away from Boucher at the last moment. Good pace, too

11.3

Broad to Boucher, no run, a touch wider this time and Boucher can leave this alone more comfortably

11.4

Broad to Boucher, no run, good line on the off stump, forcing Boucher forward this time. Firmly defended

11.5

Broad to Boucher, no run, onto the front foot and defended, though the ball bobbles backwards indicating he was a little late on it

11.6

Broad to Boucher, no run, blocked out on the back foot

End of over 12 (maiden) South Africa 37/4 (RR: 3.08)
MV Boucher    0* (10b)      SCJ Broad    6-2-9-4
AB de Villiers    2* (15b)      A Flintoff    1-0-1-0

12.1

Flintoff to de Villiers, no run, my word that's close, Flintoff's rapped him on the pads and Taufel gives it a long, hard look, but it's perhaps just shaping down the leg side. A very good shout though, and encouraging movement off the pitch for Flintoff

12.2

Flintoff to de Villiers, 3 runs, clipped smartly through midwicket, and Broad makes a good diving save on the boundary edge

12.3

Flintoff to Boucher, 2 runs, down the leg side, and nudged behind square - Broad, again, has to run around and he makes another good save

Amazing, isn't it. Take a few wickets and suddenly your confidence lifts

12.4

Flintoff to Boucher, 1 run, another off-cutter but it hurries de Villiers into a nudgy poke to leg

12.5

Flintoff to de Villiers, no run, firmly defended on the front foot

13.1

Broad to Boucher, 1 run, turned to leg with a neat flick

Flintoff's receiving treatment - some padding, specifically - to one of his ankles, or feet. We're thinking it's his toenail - which he's had trouble with this summer

13.2

Broad to de Villiers, no run, nudged out to the offside

13.3

Broad to de Villiers, no run, squared up a touch out to the off side

13.4

Fine over indeed

14.3

Flintoff to Boucher, no run, very good line just outside the off stump. Boucher's cautious in defence

14.4

Flintoff to Boucher, 1 run, flicked down to fine leg for a single. Broad does the fielding and fires in a rocket throw which nearly decapitates de Villiers

14.5

Flintoff to de Villiers, OUT, got him! A fuller delivery that cuts back sharply on de Villiers, hurrying him, and he's rapped on the pads. Taufel raises his finger, and South Africa are in a sorry state here

AB de Villiers lbw b Flintoff 5 (39m 25b 0x4 0x6) SR: 20.00

15.2

South Africa are in danger of their lowest score against England, previously 107 at Lord's in 2003. And six of that South Africa side are playing today

16.1

Flintoff to Boucher, no run, a nasty, awkward lifter outside off! That's very nearly unplayable

Boucher's having a word with himself, demanding concentration

16.2

Flintoff to Boucher, no run, that's kept low this time! An off-cutter that jagged back with doom and only just missed his off stump

Suffice to say, batting is hazardous out there

16.3

Flintoff to Boucher, FOUR, beaten for pace and he top-edges this over the slips for four. Another seriously quick ball heading for Boucher's helmet, and he did well to get something on it at all

16.4

Flintoff to Boucher, OUT, got him this time! A touch fuller, Boucher is stuck on the back foot and edges it behind

MV Boucher c †Prior b Flintoff 10 (33m 23b 1x4 0x6) SR: 43.47

16.6

Another great over by Flintoff. Now then - time for Hamison? No, it'll be Broad once more

17.1

Broad to Botha, no run, good length just outside the off stump. It's defended with a roar of "no" by the right-hander

17.2

Broad to Botha, no run, defended on the back foot, angled down to gully

17.3

Broad to Botha, no run, defended on the back foot this time

17.4

Broad to Botha, no run, a little too wide from Broad, and it's comfortably left alone

17.5

Broad to Botha, no run, again it's a bit too wide and he can leave it well alone

17.6

Broad to Botha, no run, he shuffles across to the off side to defend

Well, this is a remarkable spell of bowling by England. Can South Africa eke out a competitive total

Harmison to Morkel, FOUR, swung away hard through the leg side, wide of mid-on, just an uncomplicated swing from Morkel, that's what he needs to do now

21.5

Harmison to Morkel, OUT, and another bites the dust! Morkel plays a weak cut outside off and sends a simple edge low to Matt Prior, six in the innings for him now, great effort

JA Morkel c †Prior b Harmison 6 (30m 13b 1x4 0x6) SR: 46.15

It's almost all over for the South Africans, we probably won't even need the floodlights

21.6

Harmison to Ntini, no run, goes full and straight first up, big inside edge into the pads otherwise that was out as well

End of over 22 (4 runs) South Africa 72/9 (RR: 3.27)

DW Steyn    0* (0b)      A Flintoff    6-0-18-2

22.5

DW Steyn b Flintoff 6 (11m 6b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

What a display from England, South Africa all out for 83. Stuart Broad leads them off the field, and rightly so, he did the damage to the top order. Matt Prior equals the England record of six catches, and pretty much everything went perfectly.

This is also South Africa's shortest, completed, ODI innings. A day they'll want to forget, unless they can produce a miracle with the ball. Join us in a few minutes for England's chase.

End of over 23 (11 runs) South Africa 83/10 (RR: 3.60)
