NatWest Series [Sri Lanka in England] - 5th match

England v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 8 wickets (with 75 balls remaining)

10.40am Still relatively quiet at Headingley, but the crowd are filtering through and it's expected to be a sell-out. To complement our ball-by-ball coverage, don't forget to keep an eye on our bulletin which is updated every 25 overs. Andrew Strauss, England's captain, played a straight bat when fielded questions at the toss - but the consensus is that today, perhaps, he should assert his authority and mark on the game. With Michael Vaughan almost certainly missing the Ashes, and Andrew Flintoff unlikely to make the first Test against Pakistan in a few weeks' time, Strauss has an opportunity to prove his credentials. No such problems for Sri Lanka. The match is about to get underway here, so it's goodbye from me, and time to hand over to my venerable colleague, Arun, who will keep you up-to-date with proceedings.

10.21am Andrew Strauss has called correctly and has chosen to bat first. England got off to a good start in the first 10 overs in the last one-dayer at Old Trafford last week, with Alastair Cook (who made his debut) and Marcus Trescothick putting on 77 for the first wicket. Sri Lanka, though, are a team bubbling with confidence and Lasith Malinga, who has impressed us here all summer, could be a handful on what looks like a hard pitch. It's time I got the bulletin up, but we'll have more news for you from the venerable Andrew McGlashan - our man on the ground - who is currently sheltering from the fierce Yorkshire sun inside the press box.

10.17am Still waiting for news of the toss, but we can give you some team news in the meantime. Russel Arnold - one of the few Sri Lankans not to have shone in this series - misses out today in place of Chamara Kapugedera. England are unchanged; a tactic to get the game over as quickly as possible in order to watch the football? We're far too cynical.

9.50am Andrew McGlashan, our man on the spot, confirms that Headingley is enjoying a lovely warm, sunny morning. The players are stretching, jogging and even batting and bowling on the outfield. We're expecting the toss between Mahela Jayawardene and Andrew Strauss in about 25 minutes, at 10.15.

9.23am
Good morning and welcome to our coverage of the fifth and final one-dayer between England and Sri Lanka at Headingley. Sri Lanka have utterly dominated the series, leading it 4-0, so let’s hope England can at last break their duck and make a game of it today. A few hundred miles away, England’s footballers are warming up for their quarter-final in the World Cup against Portugal. Fans of a nervous disposition might be better off watching the cricket – but then, we would say that.

The weather’s set fair, albeit rather hazy. So in the meantime, have a read of Andrew McGlashan’s preview and we’ll have more news for you about the toss, the weather, the pitch and anything else we can find as soon as we get it.

It's time I got back to the bulletin, before which I need a cup of tea. It's back to Arun and Sajan for live ball-by-ball commentary of Sri Lanka's reply. 322 they need - tough ask, but they're in form...

The players are out on the pitch with the umpires, with the flags at half-mast, as they stand to honour Fred Trueman in a minute's silence. The crowd now all clapping in appreciation of Trueman, as his face is shown on the big screen. Cheering and whistling now died down as the minute's silence takes ahold.

The Bulletin for England's innings can be found here should you have missed any of the live commentary. Our man at the ground, Andrew McGlashan, also reports that the players will return to the field wearing black armbands in honour of Trueman's death.

Despite the sunshine at Headingley, the day has a sad shadow cast over it with the news that Fred Trueman has died. A wonderful bowler and an engaging personality, on and off the field, he had been struggling with lung cancer for some time. Click here for tributes from his team-mates and friends.

A far improved performance by England. Every man and his dog (or uncle) has spoken of the importance of making big hundreds, and Marcus Trescothick's brilliant 121 laid the platform. Sri Lanka, having been so dominant all series, looked short of their best today; the fielding, in particular, left a lot to be desired and there were several clumsy mistakes in the outfield. Lasith Malinga, though, was brilliant throughout - as he has been all summer. His action might be verging on the extraordinary, but like many unorthodox bowlers he has a habit of landing the ball with unerring accuracy - a particular benefit at the end of the innings, as England's batsmen found out. A fine bowling performance from him.
