The Wisden Trophy - 1st Test

England v West Indies

Match drawn

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

Three slips, gully and short leg

0.1

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, inswing at the left hander first up and the batsman plays right inside the line

0.2

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, more swing, that one just cutting across the lefthander, Hoggard over the wicket, incidentally

0.3

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, the line's wrong from Hoggard, down leg to the left hander, but that's a good take from Prior

0.4

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, a better line, just on off stump and Gayle brings his bat down to defend fairly comfortably on the front foot

0.5

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, a touch more width outside off and Gayle nudges it down to gully who picks it up sharply

0.6

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, nips back off the seam from just outside of off and climbs a touch, forcing Gayle to defend down off his back foot

Harmison now from the Pavilion End. Cheers greet him and he's only just marked his run-up out. He's done well in county cricket already this year and he looks up for it.

End of over 1 (maiden) West Indies 0/0
CH Gayle    0* (6b)      MJ Hoggard    1-1-0-0
D Ganga    0* (0b)

1.1

Harmison to Ganga, no run, good start, nipping that off the seam back in at the right hander

1.2

Harmison to Ganga, no run, half-appeal for an inside edge. That one was at 89mph, and came back in at him, again off the seam

1.3

Harmison to Ganga, no run, hostile already, that one bouncing at him, straight, and Ganga does well to duck

The Sky team report Darren Gough says he's not faced anyone so quick as Harmison in a long while. I've seen Harmison a few times this year, too, and while I wasn't facing him (thank goodness), he was very sharp indeed

1.4

Harmison to Ganga, no run, shoots that one through down the off-side channel

1.5

Harmison to Ganga, no run, another one in the channel, Harmison's looking dangerous here already

1.6

Harmison to Ganga, no run, outside off, that one at 89.4mph, and that's well left

Good opening over from both Hoggard and Harmison, both of them into their groove very quickly

Some people are never satisfied. "What about entertaining the English public?" spits Angry from Surrey. "Why declare now? They should have batted on for an hour and piled on the runs."

End of over 2 (maiden) West Indies 0/0
D Ganga    0* (6b)      SJ Harmison    1-1-0-0
CH Gayle    0* (6b)      MJ Hoggard    1-1-0-0

2.1

Hoggard to Gayle, 2 runs, on leg and that's Gayle and West Indies off the mark, with a neat clip off the legs

2.2

Hoggard to Gayle, FOUR, off-stump half-volley and Gayle doesn't move his feet, hardly times it, and crunches it into the ground on his knees, reaching outside off stump, but such is his power that it races away

2.3

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, the outswinger to the left hander

2.4

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, outside off and Gayle shoulders arms

2.5

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, breezes that one through just outside off stump and that's left alone

2.6

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, outside off stump and that's driven to long-off

End of over 3 (6 runs) West Indies 6/0
CH Gayle    6* (12b 1x4)      MJ Hoggard    2-1-6-0
D Ganga    0* (6b)      SJ Harmison    1-1-0-0

3.1

Harmison to Ganga, no run, good attacking from Harmison, that trademark awkward bounce outside off which shoots past the shoulder

3.2

Harmison to Ganga, no run, nips back in at the right hander who defends down on it

3.3

Harmison to Ganga, 2 runs, on leg and that's turned off the hips behind square

3.4

Harmison to Ganga, no run, on middle and that's defended forward

3.5

Harmison to Ganga, no run, straight, short and that's defended down on the back foot

3.6

Harmison to Ganga, no run, down the channel, good bounce again and that's left alone. Several call "Good over" from the slips and you can't disagree

End of over 4 (2 runs) West Indies 8/0
D Ganga    2* (12b)      SJ Harmison    2-1-2-0
CH Gayle    6* (12b 1x4)      MJ Hoggard    2-1-6-0

They've brought a man in at a short mid-off, bringing one of the slips out - just the two in, now

4.1

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, left alone

4.2

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, sails that one innocuously enough down the off-side channel

4.3

Hoggard to Gayle, 1 run, up there, on middle and leg, and that's tapped into short midwicket for a quick single

The third slip's returned for Ganga

4.4

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, now that would have been a good ball to Gayle, the left hander, but that was to Ganga, the right hander, and it slipped down leg

4.5

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, nice curl in the air, scooping away from outside off, nearly drawing the batsman into the shot

4.6

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, that one's left easily, just a touch wider down the channel

An interesting snippo from Willo who tells us that Hoggard's baby's name, Ernest, is derived from Germanic eornost meaning "seriousness". Thanks to Willo who adds, lest there be any doubt, "I'm a geek."

End of over 5 (1 run) West Indies 9/0
D Ganga    2* (15b)      MJ Hoggard    3-1-7-0
CH Gayle    7* (15b 1x4)      SJ Harmison    2-1-2-0

5.1

Harmison to Gayle, no run, stays over the wicket for his first ball to Gayle, and that's controlled past his shoulder - tight angles and awkward bounce

5.2

Harmison to Gayle, no run, that one's straighter, climbing again from short of a length, and Gayle gets over it, unruffled

5.3

Harmison to Gayle, 1 run, on leg and Gayle pulls it round, on one leg, and Monty Panesar does the work, his first piece of action in this Test so far. He gets a rousing reception

5.4

Harmison to Ganga, no run, outside off, and that's left alone

5.5

Harmison to Ganga, no run, left alone outside off, not tested there

Lots of woollens out there, it's quite nippy today

5.6

Harmison to Ganga, no run, huge appeal for a strangle down leg, Harmison was not interested, but Prior took that well down the leg side.

. "A bit of Stewart in that, the way he didn't let his elbows hit the ground." And he's dressed smartly, too, just like Stewart who, incidentally, is his manager.

End of over 6 (1 run) West Indies 10/0
D Ganga    2* (18b)      SJ Harmison    3-1-3-0
CH Gayle    8* (18b 1x4)      MJ Hoggard    3-1-7-0

6.1

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, outside off

6.2

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, up there and that's poke-prodded down, bouncing well in front of the slips

6.3

Hoggard to Gayle, FOUR, clipped away well off the legs, a mere flick of the wrist, and that races down the hill

Short leg now comes up to short midwicket

6.4

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, oh, ball of the day so far, Gayle not taking a stride forward but nevertheless drawn into the drive. I'd have liked him to have moved towards the ball, but instead he's swishing away from his body and it nearly costs him

6.5

Hoggard to Gayle, 1 run, oh (again), this one on middle-and-leg and he just brings his bat down on it to work it into mid-on

6.6

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, pushed up there and it's defended on the front foot

Harmison's just fine tuning his field

End of over 7 (5 runs) West Indies 15/0
D Ganga    2* (19b)      MJ Hoggard    4-1-12-0
CH Gayle    13* (23b 2x4)      SJ Harmison    3-1-3-0

7.1

Harmison to Gayle, 1 leg bye, on leg and that's mispulled - the timing's awry - down to square

7.2

Harmison to Ganga, no run, outside off and that's left alone

7.3

Harmison to Ganga, no run, outside off, left alone on the rise and Prior collects

7.4

Harmison to Ganga, no run

7.5

Harmison to Ganga, no run, right up there, a good line, easily defended down

7.6

Harmison to Ganga, 1 no ball, overstepped there, but Ganga comes forward and defends

7.6

Harmison to Ganga, no run, yorker length, well dug out and Ganga rehearses the shot just to make it fully sweet

End of over 8 (2 runs) West Indies 17/0
D Ganga    2* (25b)      SJ Harmison    4-1-4-0
CH Gayle    13* (24b 2x4)      MJ Hoggard    4-1-12-0

8.1

Hoggard to Gayle, 2 runs, the ball swung into his pads and he played it late, working it to leg

8.2

Hoggard to Gayle, 1 run, up there and that's driven out to extra cover where it's picked up easily

8.3

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, ooh, great delivery, shaping away after it hit the seam, and it kept low, but didn't carry

8.4

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, swung away again outside off

8.5

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, right up there and defended easily on the front foot

8.6

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, away swing and once again that's left easily enough

End of over 9 (3 runs) West Indies 20/0
D Ganga    2* (29b)      MJ Hoggard    5-1-15-0
CH Gayle    16* (26b 2x4)      SJ Harmison    4-1-4-0

9.1

Harmison to Gayle, no run, on leg, Gayle tries to swing round on to that, pulling it, but doesn't quite get hold of it

9.2

Harmison to Gayle, 1 wide, pushing that across, but it's a little too wide for him

9.2

Harmison to Gayle, 1 run, on leg, tucked well off the pads through to square

9.3

Harmison to Ganga, no run, over to that and driven to cover

9.4

Harmison to Ganga, no run, well bowled, pushing that one up the batsman who defends into the covers

9.5

Harmison to Ganga, no run, outside off, poked down into the packed slip cordon, safely enough

9.6

Harmison to Ganga, no run, Ganga once more repels the threat, on his back foot and defending it down into the cover region

That's the end of the first Powerplay.

End of over 10 (2 runs) West Indies 22/0
D Ganga    2* (33b)      SJ Harmison    5-1-6-0
CH Gayle    17* (28b 2x4)      MJ Hoggard    5-1-15-0

10.1

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, stays over to the left hander, incidentally, and shoots one across him which bounces fairly sharply, only to be prodded back down without much fuss

10.2

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, shuffles that one down the channel, Gayle watchful in leaving that, though

10.3

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, on off, making Gayle play a nervous defensive, on the front foot and it's not very well played whatsoever

10.4

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, on middle-and-leg, shaping in at the left hander a little too quick for him, he stops on the pull, not getting over it, and nearly sends the ball to short midwicket

10.5

Hoggard to Gayle, no run, chases that one, which is going down leg, down leg

10.6

Hoggard to Gayle, FOUR, another display of Gayle's power - a thick inside edge skews through square and races away

The Powerplay comment was, I thought obviously enough, a joke regarding how long the World Cup went on. Nevermind.

End of over 11 (4 runs) West Indies 26/0
CH Gayle    21* (34b 3x4)      MJ Hoggard    6-1-19-0
D Ganga    2* (33b)      SJ Harmison    5-1-6-0

11.1

Harmison to Ganga, 1 run, nips back in off the seam, and that's defended down off the back foot

11.2

Harmison to Gayle, FOUR, outside off, Gayle's feet stay planted, but nevermind as he whips that one off the back foot in front of midwicket

11.3

Harmison to Gayle, no run, pushes that one across the left hander who stands tall in defence

11.4

Harmison to Gayle, FOUR, stands tall and drives that half-volley on the up through long-off

11.5

Harmison to Gayle, 1 run, across the left hander, who stands tall, again, and drives that back to mid-off

11.6

Harmison to Ganga, 1 run, tickled into the covers and will they take the single? "Yeahyeahyeah" and it's a quick one, too, very well taken

And that's (you'll like that one, CK) a change in the bowling - Liam Plunkett at the Nursery End

End of over 12 (11 runs) West Indies 37/0
D Ganga    4* (35b)      SJ Harmison    6-1-17-0
CH Gayle    30* (38b 5x4)      MJ Hoggard    6-1-19-0

12.1

Plunkett to Ganga, 1 run, worked into short midwicket off the back foot

12.2

Plunkett to Gayle, OUT, yorker, looping in, knocking back off stump and nudging middle, Gayle played all round that one

CH Gayle b Plunkett 30 (50m 39b 5x4 0x6) SR: 76.92

Gayle had looked uncomfortable at times today, not really getting his feet going, to his peril in these conditions.

"That's always a good delivery," notes Michael Holding, while Will says "You can't beat that sound, can you?" of the wooden mayhem

12.3

Plunkett to Smith, 1 run, Plunkett plants the ball on middle-and-leg and Smith's off the mark immediately, teasing it round through square

12.4

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, huge swing, far too much as it happens, way outside off - encouraging shape nonetheless

12.5

Plunkett to Ganga, FOUR, a huge edge wide of the diving gully Kevin Pietersen, who full-stretches in vain to his left

12.6

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, harmless enough channel fare

Peter Hartman from Loerrach in Germany emails. "The modern German word "ernst" means serious, and is also a (not very common nowadays) Christian name."

End of over 13 (6 runs) West Indies 43/1
D Ganga    9* (39b 1x4)      LE Plunkett    1-0-6-1
DS Smith    1* (1b)      SJ Harmison    6-1-17-0

13.1

Harmison to Smith, no run, outside off, left alone

13.2

Harmison to Smith, no run, what you'd call a good leave, judging that one well as it sailed through outside off

13.3

Harmison to Smith, no run, went across him and he shouldered arms

13.4

Harmison to Smith, no run, good line, across the left hander, and bounce

"Come on," calls a gum-chewing Strauss in the slips

13.5

Harmison to Smith, 1 run, squared up by one which pitches short and climbs into him; the resultant defensive prod into the covers is quickly hoovered up - not with a vacuum cleaner, obviously enough

13.6

Harmison to Ganga, no run, outside off and left alone by Ganga, who does think about playing it, but instantly changes his mind

End of over 14 (1 run) West Indies 44/1
D Ganga    9* (40b 1x4)      SJ Harmison    7-1-18-0
DS Smith    2* (6b)      LE Plunkett    1-0-6-1

14.1

Plunkett to Smith, 1 leg bye, on leg and turned around off the pads, literally, through the 45

14.2

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, up there, on a good length and a sixpence, all at once, and the batsman just defends on the front foot

14.3

Plunkett to Ganga, 5 wides, another wide, this one swinging well away and on its way across a fast pitch, down the hill and up the slope

"Harmy would have been proud of that," chirps Gnasher

14.3

Plunkett to Ganga, 3 runs, outside off, driven through the covers easily enough and there's some good, hard running

14.4

Plunkett to Smith, no run, Plunkett still trying to fine his line here, to the left hander, straying onto leg; Smith drives, without good timing, into midwicket

14.5

Plunkett to Smith, 2 runs, now then, now then, as Jimmy Saville may say; nearly inside-edged right on, but got away with the trickle down through fine

14.6

Plunkett to Smith, no run, left alone outside off

While it's drinks, there's a terrific piece from Brian Viner in The Independent all about Lord's and what makes it so unique: less about the cricket, more about the people. Then mad-keen, and just mad, it will be Will Luke.

End of over 15 (11 runs) West Indies 55/1
DS Smith    4* (10b)      LE Plunkett    2-0-16-1
D Ganga    12* (42b 1x4)      SJ Harmison    7-1-18-0

Thanks Jen and hello everyone. Madman Will here. Great to be with you this afternoon - isn't it great watching a Test after all those interminable one-dayers? Well I think so. Cracking ball from Plunkett to "do" Gayle a few overs ago

15.1

Harmison to Ganga, 1 run, too short from Harmison, and a little bit of a leg-side drifter which is easily plucked off his hip down to fine-leg

15.2

Harmison to Smith, no run, on the left-hander's leg stump - a would-be perfect line to the right-hander - which is blocked out by Smith who is concreted in his crease

15.3

Harmison to Smith, 1 run, too wide of the leg stump, Smith waits in his crease and turns it with a flick of his wrists down to fine-leg

15.4

Harmison to Ganga, no run, terrific line, coming down the hill to Ganga - just outside off and he shouldered arms to one which cut back into him down the slope

Wicketkeeper and slips all roar their approval

15.5

Harmison to Ganga, no run, very, very well bowled, finding one to hold its line up the slope; Ganga came forward, poking at it injudiciously and it was mere inches from taking the outside edge

15.6

Harmison to Ganga, no run, Ganga sensibly leaves this lifter outside off well alone. As well he might

End of over 16 (2 runs) West Indies 57/1
D Ganga    13* (46b 1x4)      SJ Harmison    8-1-20-0
DS Smith    5* (12b)      LE Plunkett    2-0-16-1

16.1

Plunkett to Smith, no run, good line, jagging back markedly onto Smith who leaves this alone. Excellent delivery though

16.2

Plunkett to Smith, no run, left alone outside off

16.3

Plunkett to Smith, no run, ooh and a huge shout from Plunkett - in fact, from everyone, including us three in the office, as Plunkett swings this into the left-hander who, stuck in the crease, is rapped on the pads. Inside edge perhaps? The umpire doesn't strike back, and replays suggest that, yes, it was pad first.

In fairness to the poor belittled umpire, the prodigious inswing might have sent that over and beyond the leg stump. Anyway, it's not out

16.4

Plunkett to Smith, no run, left alone outside off

16.5

Plunkett to Smith, FOUR, ooh, he climbs into this with fervour and aggression, cover-driving with excellent timing

16.6

Plunkett to Smith, no run, smudged to mid-on with a closed face of the bat

End of over 17 (4 runs) West Indies 61/1
DS Smith    9* (18b 1x4)      LE Plunkett    3-0-20-1
D Ganga    13* (46b 1x4)      SJ Harmison    8-1-20-0

Hoggard's back on strike. Matthew, not Ernie, replacing Harmison from the pavilion end

17.1

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, but he starts with a poor leg-side drifter

Prior collects well, stooping forward. He's been very impressive so far this morning; Lord's is not an easy place to 'keep

17.2

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, nicely bowled, Hoggard, right in the channel and Ganga came forward without much conviction, getting a thick outside edge which fell short of the slips. Played with soft hands, though

17.3

Hoggard to Ganga, 1 run, too short, too straight and it's turned away with ease

17.4

Hoggard to Smith, no run, better line this time, on the left-hander's off stump and he's back, across and defending with a straight blade

"ellitfprotrotreerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrtffff" says Raja. No, I have no idea either...

17.5

Hoggard to Smith, no run, excellent ball, the perfect length - Smith really ought to have come forward there but he just poked his bat at it, and got an inside edge

Hoggard yelps a strangled appeal

17.6

Hoggard to Smith, no run, ah Hoggard's on the money now, swinging this into his pads; Smith's head falls over (in a semi-literal sense) and he's rapped on the pads, but it's outside leg

Encouraging over

End of over 18 (1 run) West Indies 62/1
DS Smith    9* (21b 1x4)      MJ Hoggard    7-1-20-0
D Ganga    14* (49b 1x4)      LE Plunkett    3-0-20-1

Gnasher's in a "combative" mood today. His words

18.1

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, down the leg side to start the over

18.2

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, in the channel, but in fact a little too wide to trouble Ganga who left it alone

18.3

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, driven on the front foot

18.4

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, and it's left alone outside off

18.5

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, ah, lovely delivery on middle-and-off, just shaping away at the very last moment. Ganga is crouched and watchful in defence, almost being squared up too

18.6

Plunkett to Ganga, 1 run, just a bit too straight this time, Ganga nudges it to leg for a single

End of over 19 (1 run) West Indies 63/1
D Ganga    15* (55b 1x4)      LE Plunkett    4-0-21-1
DS Smith    9* (21b 1x4)      MJ Hoggard    7-1-20-0

19.1

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, nice, banana-swinging looper outside off which is comfortably left alone by Ganga

19.2

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, big swing this time but it was pitched too wide of the off stump, swinging further away from Ganga who rightly shouldered arms like a winner

19.3

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, Ganga is back and across, defending this off the back foot. More of a fend than a defend, in fact

19.4

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, very well bowled - a straighter ball which causes yelps of anxiety from those behind the stumps as Ganga, at the very last moment, nicks it to leg

19.5

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, and this one swings away from Ganga but he's up to the task and leaves it well alone

19.6

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, nudged to leg to finish the over

End of over 20 (maiden) West Indies 63/1
D Ganga    15* (61b 1x4)      MJ Hoggard    8-2-20-0
DS Smith    9* (21b 1x4)      LE Plunkett    4-0-21-1

"Bring on Colly," roars Gnasher. But it'll be KerPlunkett to continue

20.1

Plunkett to Smith, no run, Smith gets into a bit of a tangle here, nudging it to leg off his pads. Or he tried to, anyway

20.2

Plunkett to Smith, no run, an ugly, wide delivery which Smith couldn't have reached even with two bats sellotaped together

20.3

Plunkett to Smith, no run, on off stump, driven without timing straight back to the batsman

20.4

Plunkett to Smith, no run, swinging into the left-hander's pads who tries to whip it through midwicket but whips it nowhere, in fact

Man at square leg has gone back onto the boundary. There are also two slips, in case I'd forgotten to tell you, which I had

20.5

Plunkett to Smith, no run, a bit too wide of the off stump, left well alone

20.6

Plunkett to Smith, 4 leg byes, poor, wasted delivery, swinging down the leg side. Disappointing

End of over 21 (maiden) West Indies 67/1
DS Smith    9* (27b 1x4)      LE Plunkett    5-1-21-1
D Ganga    15* (61b 1x4)      MJ Hoggard    8-2-20-0

21.1

Hoggard to Ganga, 1 run, ooh, well it's nicely played in the end - a whip on the front foot, turning it to midwicket at the very last moment

Time for the Montster I reckon

21.2

Hoggard to Smith, no run, too wide and left alone

21.3

Hoggard to Smith, no run, oh that's a catch, is it? No, but it was pushed back to Hoggard, falling short. In fact it was off the pad, too

21.4

Hoggard to Smith, FOUR, magnificently driven - shot of the day. Half-volley outside off and he flayed his hands at it, stroking it beautifully along the ground for four. No need to run, and he doesn't

We like that. Emphatically hit

21.5

Hoggard to Smith, FOUR, oh even better. Smith took a greater stride down the pitch this time, driving it on the up through extra cover. Elegantly played - quite audaciously hit

21.6

Hoggard to Smith, no run, Hoggard sends this wider and it's ignored

End of over 22 (9 runs) West Indies 76/1
DS Smith    17* (32b 3x4)      MJ Hoggard    9-2-29-0
D Ganga    16* (62b 1x4)      LE Plunkett    5-1-21-1

22.1

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, nicely bowled - yorker length, almost nutmegging the batsman, but the line was poor and down the leg side

The ever enthusiastic slips ask the umpire nevertheless

22.2

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, outside off, no swing from Plunkett this time and it's ignored

Ah, there's a huge banner flying over the ground. "Lord's: the home of cricket" it reads. This is Keith Bradshaw's idea - the newly installed secretary of MCC

22.3

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, left alone outside off

22.4

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, good lift off a decent length but it's too wide, and easily left alone

Nasser Hussain is critical of England's lines, and I have to agree with him. They've been fine this morning, but just not tight enough on off stump

22.5

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, and in fact that's the exact line Plunkett should be targetting, just on off stump and it's squirted rather edgily to gully who dives forward to field

22.6

Plunkett to Ganga, 3 runs, but he loses his line, down the leg side and it's worked down to Monty Panesar at deep midwicket

The crowd cheer the Montster as is their wont

23.1

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, good line from Hoggard, on off stump and keeping Ganga back in his crease who blocks it out off the back foot

Five more of those please Hoggard

23.2

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, good thinking: a bouncer which is evaded. Not particularly threatening, but he's keeping Ganga back in his crease

23.3

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, again a shorter delivery, misdirected and Ganga tries to pull it but misses

Time for the yorker

23.4

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, well it's not a yorker, instead a nice little awayswinger which forces him forward and he solidly blocks it out to cover

23.5

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, bit of a smudging drive, getting a thick inside edge which sends the ball to mid-on, not mid-off as intended

23.6

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, darts this one into Ganga who misreads it and is rapped on the pads. Or thigh. Or somewhere, but definitely not the bat

Pretty good, tight, intelligent over from Hoggard

Now then, who's up next? More Plunkett

24.1

Plunkett to Smith, no run, too short, Smith pulls with Caribbean flair ala Des Haynes but smacks it straight to mid-on

24.2

Plunkett to Smith, no run, far too wide for Smith to be bothered, and he really isn't bothered, leaving it well alone

24.3

Plunkett to Smith, no run, slightly tighter line, but still not enough to trouble the batsman who skips back and shoulders arms

24.4

Plunkett to Smith, no run, defended on the front foot

My boss, Martin, who should be on a day off in Esher and who is pretending to be ill, has just compared me to Henry Blofeld. Well done everyone. I don't even talk about pigeons but I'm tempted to now...

24.5

Plunkett to Smith, FOUR, cracked on the front foot - flayed, in fact, stroking it through cover for four. Super effort

24.6

Plunkett to Smith, no run, too wide, left alone

Right, KerPlunkett needs a rest now. I've decided. It's time for Monty

25.1

Hoggard to Ganga, no run, half a shout for lbw as Hoggard raps Ganga on the pads, but it's just sliding down the leg side. Not a bad shout...just needs to pitch it on middle-and-off though

Collingwood to finish the over and Eoin Morgan is on as 12th man

Hoggard's calling on the physio it looks like. Hamstring or groin, we don't yet know. Oh dear, this is not very good at all and he's going off. Appears to be his hamstring and, as Atherton says, Hoggard isn't one to go off unless he really needs to. Tough nut these Yorkies. That is bad news

25.2

Collingwood to Ganga, no run, Collingwood starts with one just outside off, swinging away and it barely carries to Prior

25.3

Collingwood to Ganga, no run, better delivery, cut off the back foot but straight to gully

So then. No Hoggard for the time being. Monty's in for a long afternoon by all accounts...and possibly Collingwood too. And possibly Shah also.

25.4

Collingwood to Ganga, no run, neatly defended to cover off the back foot

25.5

Collingwood to Ganga, no run, ooh close, very close to pushing that straight back into Collingwood's left mitt but it falls just short

Monty over the wicket

Ian Bell, aka The Sherminator, is the victim under the helmet at short leg. Hence the delay

And a big cheer goes up for Monty who's into the attack. Strauss gives him a bit of advice, or perhaps just discussing the state of the world at the moment

26.1

Panesar to Smith, OUT, bowled him! What a brilliant delivery. Smith completely missed it, expecting it to turn more than it did; a tentative forward defence and he's bowled

DS Smith b Panesar 21 (61m 39b 4x4 0x6) SR: 53.84

Monty has gone utterly berserk, as well he might. Terrific ball; dreadful stroke

Monty around the wicket

Here's Ronnie Sarwan. We can hear Prior for the first time on the stump mike

26.2

Panesar to Sarwan, no run, ooh excellent, flighting delivery on leg stump which balloons off his pad

26.3

Panesar to Sarwan, no run, slightly quicker, on middle stump it's blocked out

Prior says "oooh"

26.4

Panesar to Sarwan, no run, Sarwan comes forward, confidently, to a flighted ball on middle and defends

No great turn

26.5

Panesar to Sarwan, no run, perfect length, dragging Sarwan forward who blocks it out. Alastair Cook is right in there at silly point

26.6

Panesar to Sarwan, FOUR, ah, too short, wide, and cracked off the back foot. Fine stroke, taking advantage of the one poor ball of the over

What a start, though, for Monty

Harmison is unleashed for the over before lunch

27.1

Harmison to Ganga, 1 run, a yelp from Harmison as the batsman nudges this off his pads. Wrong line, though

So Sarwan's back on strike, facing Harmison for the first time this series

27.2

Harmison to Sarwan, 1 no ball, blimey, that's wild from Harmison - a Brisbane-bender, if you like. Right down the leg side and Prior dives to his left, brilliantly, to save four

Prior has been very impressive with the gloves so far today

27.2

Harmison to Sarwan, no run, much better, a cracking ball on middle stump which hurries Sarwan into defending

27.3

Harmison to Sarwan, FOUR, fine shot from Sarwan, typically classical, just punching this fuller delivery straight back past Harmison down for four. Calmly played

27.4

Harmison to Sarwan, no run, better line this time, just outside off, but it's easily ignored by Sarwan with an eye to lunch

27.5

Harmison to Sarwan, FOUR, fabulous shot; hammered off the back foot, in front of square, for four. He really climbed into that

1.45pm Still with us? Good, then we're off again. Panesar on.

Hoggard has strained an abductor muscle, somewhere near or on his thigh. So it's not a groin injury, which is good, apparently. More news when we get it.

And that's lunch on the third day at Lord's - an absorbing first session, on what is a very good batting pitch. Harmison showed good rhythm, as did Hoggard, but in general England were a bit too wide and allowed the batsmen a bit too much freedom outside off. The big concern, though, is Hoggard who hobbled off just before lunch with what appeared to be a groin injury. England could be a bowler down not just today but for the rest of the Test. We'll keep you updated of course. Join Jenny after lunch for the afternoon session.

28.1

Panesar to Ganga, 1 run, swivels the ball in to the batsman who promptly drives it back through covers

28.2

Panesar to Sarwan, no run, great loop, flighting it really well, but the man's saved by the inside-edge

28.3

Panesar to Sarwan, no run, all sorts of things going on, there, the batsman jabbing down on it and it bobbled down behind leg stump

28.4

Panesar to Sarwan, no run, half-appeals, which are pulled out of, as that's defended forward

28.5

Panesar to Sarwan, 1 run, outside the line and driven out easily to the man at extra cover

28.6

29.1

Harmison to Sarwan, no run, the most fruity of jaffas, there! Harmison had Sarwan forward and feeling for that and how it failed to take the edge is anyone's guess. Like a kipper

29.2

Harmison to Sarwan, FOUR, short this time, and Sarwan gratefully accepts the gift with a pull well-swivelled up and over midwicket - he got hold of that a treat all right

29.3

Harmison to Sarwan, no run, right up there this time, Sarwan digs it out

29.4

Harmison to Sarwan, FOUR, strays on to leg, easily clipped behind square by Sarwan with quick eyes and wrists

29.5

Harmison to Sarwan, 1 run, on off, a decent line, shame about the length, too short, which Sarwan deals with nicely, easing it off the back foot into the covers

29.6

Fielders all around ready to swoop - it's like The Birds, minus the telegraph wires

30.4

Harmison to Ganga, 1 run, on leg again, Harmison still struggling with his line just after lunch, and Ganga easily works the ball off his toes to square

31.2

Harmison to Sarwan, no run, decent line-and-length this time, but not too testing, and a forward defence will more than do

31.3

Harmison to Sarwan, no run, a hint of aggression now from Sarwan, coming down the track and looking to drive through the covers - he meets the ball but decides to defend when he gets there

31.4

Harmison to Sarwan, no run, terrible line from Harmison, wide down leg, but Prior does well, diving goalkeeper-style to his left

31.5

Harmison to Sarwan, no run, chased that one down leg

32.2

Panesar to Ganga, no run, pushed up closer, defended this time

32.3

Panesar to Ganga, no run, more defending, again on the front foot

32.4

Panesar to Ganga, no run, very good consistent line on off, and Ganga can only defend. Well, he can do what he wants, frankly, but defending is the most sensible option

32.5

Panesar to Ganga, 1 run, straighter delivery, Ganga merely presses his bat towards square and an easy single results

32.6

33.2

Harmison to Ganga, no run, Ganga now shows his intent, down the pitch on the off side, but defends at the last milisecond

33.3

Harmison to Ganga, no run, Harmison loses his line again, skewing that one down leg

33.4

Harmison to Ganga, FOUR, a little bit too straight, to which Ganga offers a mere caress of an on-drive through wide mid-on and that races towards the rope, Morgan in pursuit

33.5

Harmison to Ganga, no run, nips back in off the seam at a testing angle and bounce, but that's a good leave

35.2

Harmison to Ganga, no run, bounce once more, on the off stick this time which has Ganga fending down from around chest height

35.3

Harmison to Ganga, no run, another delivery down leg but the slips are up for what they think is a strangle. It's nothing of the kind, and, tellingly, neither Prior nor Harmison appeal

35.4

Harmison to Ganga, 2 runs, Cook returns from the covers and a deflection hits Sarwan's ankle, but the batsmen don't go for the overthrows

35.5

Harmison to Ganga, 1 run, yet again on the legs, presenting an easy opportunity for a single behind square

Harmison to Sarwan, no run, it's down leg once more

37.4

37.5

37.5

Harmison to Ganga, 4 leg byes, straighter, but then it's all relative, and it's still on the legs. Tickled fine to bring up the fifty partnership from 71 balls

38.3

39.1

39.2

Plunkett to Ganga, FOUR, and even better, finding the edge but the batsman gets away with it, and four to his name, as the ball flies through the vacant third slip at would-be catchable height

39.3

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, decent line again, but short enough for Ganga to defend that on the back foot

39.4

39.5

Plunkett to Ganga, 1 wide, Prior's all over the shop here - it's not his fault, though, Plunkett's wide (wider than the white mark, there) had him diving right across first slip

39.5

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, driven out to mid-on now

39.6

Plunkett to Ganga, no run, defended this time as Plunkett finishes a less-than-impressive over

D Ganga lbw b Panesar 49 (185m 131b 5x4 0x6) SR: 37.40

Here's Runako Morton who once took 31 balls for a duck in one-dayers.

44.4

Panesar to Morton, 1 run, on middle, too straight and Morton nicks it to leg to get off t'mark

Over the wicket to Chanderpaul

44.5

Panesar to Chanderpaul, no run, Chanderpaul is forward, solidly, defending on the front foot

44.6

Panesar to Chanderpaul, no run, and on off stump this time, blocked out from Chanderpaul

Excellent over once again from the Montster

End of over 45 (1 run) West Indies 166/4
S Chanderpaul    2* (14b)      MS Panesar    10-1-27-3
RS Morton    1* (1b)      LE Plunkett    10-2-46-1

"I'm having HTML issues," says Gnasher. That was the most printable exclamation...

45.1

Plunkett to Morton, 1 run, ooh it's a vicious lifted fended off his neck high to Collingwood at second slip, who jumped up but could only parry it; Strauss at first slip tried to turn round but couldn't make the ground. A chance goes begging

45.2

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, no run, poor delivery down the leg side. A waste

45.3

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, no run, another waste, this time wide of the off stump

Only Panesar has been consistent with his lines today. The rest, especially after lunch, have been ragged and ill disciplined

45.4

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, no run, a slightly better line but it's still comfortably wide of the off stump and Chanderpaul ignores it

45.5

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, no run, at last, it's on off stump and forcing Chanderpaul forward who defends

I'm less and less convinced Sky's new gimmick, Hot Spot, offers much at all

45.6

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, 2 runs, a typical Chanderpaul punch through the covers for two. Probably could've got three if he was up for it. He wasn't up for it.

End of over 46 (3 runs) West Indies 169/4
S Chanderpaul    4* (19b)      LE Plunkett    11-2-49-1
RS Morton    2* (2b)      MS Panesar    10-1-27-3

46.1

Panesar to Morton, 1 run, punched back to Monty who jumps up, parries it behind him to Eoin Morgan who does very well to prevent two

Over the wicket to the left hander

46.2

Panesar to Chanderpaul, 3 runs, cracked square of the wicket and the two subs - Morgan and someone else who I'm not quite sure - put on a fine piece of relay fielding, saving four

46.3

Panesar to Morton, no run, landed on off, and it balloons to silly point. A belated appeal is turned down

Crikey, that did look close on replays

46.4

Panesar to Morton, no run, flighted on middle-and-off and it's blocked out

46.5

Panesar to Morton, no run, a rare stray from Monty drifting it down the leg side

46.6

Panesar to Morton, no run, and he ends it with a good one on off stump

End of over 47 (4 runs) West Indies 173/4
RS Morton    3* (7b)      MS Panesar    11-1-31-3
S Chanderpaul    7* (20b)      LE Plunkett    11-2-49-1

47.1

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, no run, just on off stump, Chanderpaul comes forward a little tentatively, smudging it back to the bowler with a closed face of the bat

47.2

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, 1 run, picked off to leg, oh and Morgan does terrific work and throws down the stumps...but they're home safely enough

47.3

Plunkett to Morton, no run, poor ball down the leg side, it bobbles off the pads meekly

Come on. Sort your lines out

47.4

Plunkett to Morton, no run, that's much better and that's defended on the off stump

47.5

Plunkett to Morton, no run, ah, great delivery. That's much more like it, on off stump and curving back in gently to the right hander who defends it

Oh and a woman is spotted in the crowd with what looks like a bird's nest on her head. It's a hat, of sorts. Looks like she's been rolling in the hay, not that I'm casting aspersions. And there's not a lot of hay in St John's Wood either

47.6

Plunkett to Morton, no run, defended solidly on the front foot to end t'over

End of over 48 (1 run) West Indies 174/4
RS Morton    3* (11b)      LE Plunkett    12-2-50-1
S Chanderpaul    8* (22b)      MS Panesar    11-1-31-3

Over the wicket

Over in the world of Association Football, Chelsea and Manchester United are about to kick off - not literally (at least not yet) - in the FA Cup final which has returned to Wem-ber-ley this year. Jenny had to tell me this because I hate football. Do you?

48.1

Panesar to Chanderpaul, no run, outside off and padded away by Chanders

48.2

Panesar to Chanderpaul, no run, Prior says "awwww" to Chanderpaul's immensely solid forward defence

48.3

Panesar to Chanderpaul, no run, pushed out to cover; Prior says "get it" and it is got by the fielder

48.4

Panesar to Chanderpaul, 1 run, picked off his pads - too straight from Monty. Strauss does well at short midwicket and throws down the stumps

Back around the wicket

48.5

Panesar to Morton, 1 run, turned around the corner; they want two but they'd be very silly if they took two, and they rightly decide against it

48.6

Panesar to Chanderpaul, no run, left alone outside off

Adam Cartwright has a very good point. "Hi, when will Ian Botham and Nasser Hussain stop saying 'Chandrapaul'?"

End of over 49 (2 runs) West Indies 176/4
S Chanderpaul    9* (27b)      MS Panesar    12-1-33-3
RS Morton    4* (12b)      LE Plunkett    12-2-50-1

49.1

Plunkett to Morton, 1 run, nice delivery angling into the right hander who shuffles across and digs it out to leg

49.2

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, no run, a leg-side bouncer

Probably the most ineffectual bouncer seen anywhere this year. Why would you want to bowl a wide, leg-side bouncer?

49.3

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, 1 run, on leg stump, again, and it's turned to midwicket

49.4

Plunkett to Morton, no run, well bowled, but well played. Angling back into Morton who is almost squared up, but actually times it very well to cover

49.5

Plunkett to Morton, FOUR, magnificent stroke. Stand and deliver. It was a half-volley, mind you, but he just swung through the line and cracked it as straight as a die

49.6

Plunkett to Morton, no run, a non-bouncing bouncer which is left alone

End of over 50 (6 runs) West Indies 182/4
RS Morton    9* (16b 1x4)      LE Plunkett    13-2-56-1
S Chanderpaul    10* (29b)      MS Panesar    12-1-33-3
