West Indies tour of England and Ireland, 2007 / Commentary

NatWest Series [West Indies in England] - 3rd ODI

England v West Indies

West Indies won by 93 runs

10.45am England take to the field and the crowd is excited as it's warm and there's everything to play for. Of course, that's strictly untrue - there's something to play for - everything would include the Ashes, the World Cup, Wimbledon... which are not at stake today at Trent Bridge.

James Anderson will take the new ball. Bright and breezy conditions out there, by the way

10.40am Collingwood is expecting the pitch to turn. His cunning plan on the immoveable Chanderpaul, who's come through his fitness test, is to "hopefully get him out early!"

If you want to email us - and, let's be honest, why wouldn't you? - do so immediately. Reflections on how to shift Chanderpaul, for example. The Guardian had some ideas... one of them to make him play in Canada. He averages 12.66 in ODIs against them in Canada. Sadly for England, the Canadian cricket team they are not. The first and last time, ladies and gentlemen, you will ever read that sentence.

10.35am Tada, here are West Indies: 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Devon Smith, 3 Shiv Chanderpaul, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Dwayne Smith, 6 Runako Morton, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Dwayne Bravo, 9 Daren Powell, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Fidel Edwards.

10.30am It's Jenny Thompson by the way, and my co-pilot as we cruise through the day will be the ever-reliable Will Luke. So, hello one and all (or is that one and two, it is a weekend after all). Just waiting for the West Indies team. Standby...

10.25am West Indies have won the toss and will bat

10.15am Good morning and welcome to the third, and deciding, one-day international between England and West Indies from Trent Bridge. It's all square after West Indies' 61-run win at Edgbaston so this really is a winner-takes-all clash.

Some early England team news; Monty Panesar and Liam Plunkett have been recalled in place of Michael Yardy and Ryan Sidebottom. England missed Panesar's variation in the middle overs at Edgbaston so that change isn't much of a surprise. Sidebottom misses out on his home ground after not being quite the same threat in the one-day games as he showed in the Tests.

England 1 Alastair Cook, 2 Matt Prior (wk), Ian Bell, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Owais Shah, 6 Paul Collingwood, 7 Dimitri Mascarenhas, 8 Liam Plunkett, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 James Anderson, 11 Monty Panesar

0.1

Anderson to Gayle, no run, starts with a tidy enough delivery, shooting past the left hander's edge

0.2

Anderson to Gayle, no run, nips away off the seam, rising, and is left outside off

0.3

Anderson to Gayle, 1 wide, overstretched down the channel, and wide is the obvious call

0.3

Anderson to Gayle, no run, straighter delivery this time, back on the good line down off - decent length, too

0.4

Anderson to Gayle, no run, the best delivery of the over so far, Gayle in two minds about how to play one which shuffles past him; he plays late and the ball shoots through

0.5

Anderson to Gayle, no run, an early decision to leave that one

0.6

Anderson to Gayle, no run, fuller delivery, outside off and that pips the previous delivery, with some movement away from the batsman he prompts Gayle to play and miss

Tidy opening over, bar the wide, from Anderson. England will take that, they will. Now it's Smith to face his first ball, which will be delivered by Plunkett. Gnasher predicts a wide first up.

End of over 1 (1 run) West Indies 1/0 (RR: 1.00)

1.1

Plunkett to DS Smith, 1 wide, down leg - and Gnasher wins a biscuit

1.1

Plunkett to DS Smith, no run, outside off, and cut straight to the man at point

1.2

Plunkett to DS Smith, 1 wide, oh dear, another wide - down leg again

1.2

Plunkett to DS Smith, FOUR, too full but let's take nothing away from a lovely front-foot drive through long-off

1.3

Plunkett to DS Smith, no run, straight, better delivery, defended on the back foot

1.4

Plunkett to DS Smith, no run, straight again, sharp and has the batsman bending over in defence, nearly cutting him in two

1.5

Plunkett to DS Smith, FOUR, overpitched this time and yet another drive, through cover this time, merely leaning into that off the back foot to time it all the way to the boundary

1.6

Plunkett to DS Smith, 1 run, dinked down off the back foot for a shuffle-and-run, which bags the strike, too

Poor opening over from Plunkett, but West Indies cashed in well. Not much swing out there today

End of over 2 (11 runs) West Indies 12/0 (RR: 6.00)
DS Smith    9* (6b 2x4)      LE Plunkett    1-0-11-0

Smith's first delivery from Anderson

2.1

Anderson to DS Smith, no run, on off-and-middle, squeezed into midwicket

2.2

Anderson to DS Smith, FOUR, there goes Smith with another one of those well-timed drives - that one was full and he steps forward to time through long-off

2.3

Anderson to DS Smith, OUT, gone this time, though - trying to drive, but skewing an outside edge to backward point, Bell snapping up low, to his right. A good catch

DS Smith c Bell b Anderson 13 (10m 9b 3x4 0x6) SR: 144.44

Short and sweet. Here's Chanderpaul. Two slips in

2.4

Anderson to Chanderpaul, no run, yorker outside off greets him and Chanderpaul responds with a late defence

2.5

Anderson to Chanderpaul, no run, outside off, rising on its way through to Prior. Good-looking delivery, but Chanderpaul isn't tempted

2.6

Anderson to Chanderpaul, no run, a rare sign of swing but wide enough to leave outside off

End of over 3 (4 runs) West Indies 16/1 (RR: 5.33)
S Chanderpaul    0* (3b)      JM Anderson    2-0-5-1
CH Gayle    0* (6b)      LE Plunkett    1-0-11-0

Plunkett to Gayle, no run, shapes across the left hander, who leaves

3.2

Plunkett to Gayle, no run, tighter, nice, but Gayle is confident in leaving

3.3

Plunkett to Gayle, FOUR, Plunkett still struggling with his length, too full again, and Gayle presses through cover to get off the mark

One of the two slips comes out to short extra

3.4

Plunkett to Gayle, no run, left alone down the channel

3.5

Plunkett to Gayle, no run, ooh, a drive is dropped by Cook at extra cover - it flew

Rare lapse these days from Cook; it was travelling, but still should have been taken

3.6

Plunkett to Gayle, no run, left alone outside off

A better second over from Plunkett, and should have had a first wicket

End of over 4 (4 runs) West Indies 20/1 (RR: 5.00)
CH Gayle    4* (12b 1x4)      LE Plunkett    2-0-15-0

4.1

Anderson to Chanderpaul, 1 run, pressed forward for a single

4.2

Anderson to Gayle, no run, straight ball rising, squares him up but he manages to prod down off the back foot to point

4.3

Anderson to Gayle, FOUR, full, driven through cover

4.4

Anderson to Gayle, no run, testing one, pitching on off and moving away from the righthander on a good length

4.5

Anderson to Gayle, no run, the batsman's forced to think about it again, but judges the leave well

4.6

Anderson to Gayle, no run, outside off, full, and a well-struck drive to cover, but straight at the man

End of over 5 (5 runs) West Indies 25/1 (RR: 5.00)
CH Gayle    8* (17b 2x4)      JM Anderson    3-0-10-1

5.1

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, no run, left alone on the rise outside off

5.2

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, no run, shoots through on a good length, the ball rises fairly sharply

5.3

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, no run, comes forward and an "Oh" as Chanderpaul comes forward, misses, and is rapped high, too high in fact for a shout

5.4

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, 1 wide, down leg, and Plunkett's not happy with himself

5.4

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, 1 run, outside off, tries to turn the face and a thick outside edge flies just short of second slip - it's Cook again, but this time there was no catch on offer

5.5

Plunkett to Gayle, FOUR, fuller and well driven through extra cover

5.6

Plunkett to Gayle, no run, straight and tries to brandish a thick clip off the hips, but mistimes it and the ball falls down, lifeless

End of over 6 (6 runs) West Indies 31/1 (RR: 5.16)
CH Gayle    12* (19b 3x4)      LE Plunkett    3-0-21-0
S Chanderpaul    2* (8b)      JM Anderson    3-0-10-1

6.1

Anderson to Chanderpaul, no run, round the wicket, up there, defended down on the front foot

6.2

Anderson to Chanderpaul, no run, down the channel, fairly innocuous

6.3

Anderson to Chanderpaul, no run, pushed right up there, defended down with ease

6.4

Anderson to Chanderpaul, no run, full, wide, Chanderpaul tempted into the drive, but misses completely - Prior tidies up with a dive

6.5

Anderson to Chanderpaul, 1 run, turned round through fine leg

6.6

Anderson to Gayle, no run, left alone down off

Our feedback's bust. Or there's nobody reading. Or both. If nobody's reading Cricinfo, do we still make a sound?

On to less important matters - it's time for a change out there, Broad is into the attack. Let's see if he can be more disciplined than Plunkett.

End of over 7 (1 run) West Indies 32/1 (RR: 4.57)
CH Gayle    12* (20b 3x4)      JM Anderson    4-0-11-1
S Chanderpaul    3* (13b)      LE Plunkett    3-0-21-0

7.1

Broad to Chanderpaul, no run, on off, driven to mid-off, logically enough

7.2

Broad to Chanderpaul, 2 runs, not full enough to pull as Chanderpaul would have liked, so it skews off towards Panesar who runs round from mid-on

7.3

Broad to Chanderpaul, FOUR, full ball, encouraging the drive... and Chanderpaul obliges with a firm off-drive

7.4

Broad to Chanderpaul, 1 run, on leg, played off the legs to deep backward square leg

7.5

Broad to Gayle, no run, outside off, just down the channel, left alone

7.6

Broad to Gayle, FOUR, short and smashed through the off-side now

So the answer to the question at the start of the over, is a resounding no.

End of over 8 (11 runs) West Indies 43/1 (RR: 5.37)
CH Gayle    16* (22b 4x4)      SCJ Broad    1-0-11-0

End of over 9 (4 runs) West Indies 47/1 (RR: 5.22)
S Chanderpaul    11* (20b 1x4)      JM Anderson    5-0-15-1

9.4

9.5

Broad to Chanderpaul, no run, straight, worked down and thoughts of a shuffle

9.6

Broad to Chanderpaul, no run, on off, sharp one has Chanderpaul fending deftly down off the back foot

Better from Broad who counts, among his fans, Darren Gough. Just thought I'd share.

Speaking of... I'm still not getting your emails, dear readers, but I have had one from MCC about archery at Lord's: it's China v India v Great Britain in August. So there you go. Wonder if Kepler and Riki will be in attendance in any capacity; that's their autre forte you know.

The end of the first Powerplay and ... the start of the second.

End of over 10 (1 run) West Indies 48/1 (RR: 4.80)
S Chanderpaul    11* (23b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    2-0-12-0

10.1

Anderson to Gayle, no run, on off, defended solidly

10.2

Anderson to Gayle, no run, a pinch of swing, a punch of a forward defensive

10.3

Anderson to Gayle, no run, on leg, tucked off the hips to square

10.4

Anderson to Gayle, no run, half-volley, rushes outside off, Gayle decides to play but soon wishes he hadn't - as the ball nips away at the last minute off the seam

10.5

Anderson to Gayle, 2 runs, dropped by Bell at backward point. Sitter in fact. Collingwood would have had that one, you'd imagine, but as captain he now fields closer to the action

Will is disgusted by Bell's drop. "Has he got a hole in his stomach?" he fumes. (Bell drops a clanger, anyone?) (Sorry)

10.6

Anderson to Gayle, no run, driven to cover

End of over 11 (2 runs) West Indies 50/1 (RR: 4.54)

11.5

Broad to Gayle, no run, outside off, dropped a touch short, slapped to the man at cover

11.6

End of over 12 (1 run) West Indies 51/1 (RR: 4.25)

12.2

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, no run, driven to mid-on

12.5

Plunkett to Chanderpaul, no run, defended on the front foot

13.5

Broad to Gayle, no run, a lesser-spotted dot

13.6

Broad to Gayle, 2 leg byes, on leg, worked round very fine but it won't go all the way

The 50 partnership is up you know, and it's been an authoritative one so far

End of over 14 (11 runs) West Indies 66/1 (RR: 4.71)
CH Gayle    30* (45b 6x4)      SCJ Broad    4-0-22-0

Plunkett to Gayle, no run, on middle, pops up a leading edge trying to turn to midwicket

Ugly shot

14.4

Plunkett to Gayle, no run, on leg, defended forward

16.2

Mascarenhas to Gayle, no run, decent delivery, at 70.7mph it's not the quickest, but it was on the button and so defended

16.3

Mascarenhas to Gayle, FOUR, not much width outside off, but Gayle does really well to drive through cover to bring up his 6000th ODI run. A good milestone to reach and does so in appropriate style

16.4

Mascarenhas to Gayle, 1 run, outside off, a prod-and-run

16.5

Mascarenhas to Chanderpaul, no run, defended forward

16.6

Mascarenhas to Chanderpaul, no run, prodded down on the front foot

We have feedback! Hello! "Please do your public service duty and condemn building of beer snakes at grounds," snorts Tom Grint. "It was ridiculous at the Oval yesterday, surely people are more interested in the cricket?" Snakes have their place, Tom (usually naughtily in the grass) but I think you're right in the case of the Oval - it was a compelling game last night.

Panesar to Gayle, 1 run, worked out to cover for an easy single

17.6

Panesar to Chanderpaul, 1 run, worked in front of square

18.1

Mascarenhas to Chanderpaul, FOUR, swept thorugh deep square leg

18.2

Mascarenhas to Chanderpaul, 1 run, third umpire needed for a quick single where Anderson shied down the stumps - but Chanderpaul was a long way home

18.3

Mascarenhas to Gayle, no run, outside off, padded up, the ball crept past the pad anyway

Marshall Pearce is in search of enlightenment. "Can you please enlighten me - what're beer snakes?" They're towers of empty beer glasses, inventively enough.

18.4

Mascarenhas to Gayle, no run, defended on the front foot this time

18.5

Mascarenhas to Gayle, no run, defended on the front foot again

18.6

Mascarenhas to Gayle, no run, outside off, flashed at

20.1

24.2

24.3

Hello, gluttons. Let's watch some cricket why don't we? Here's the Montster.

25.1

Panesar to Morton, no run, fast, flat and fired into his off stump, it's defended

25.2

Panesar to Morton, no run, blocked out on middle

25.3

Panesar to Morton, 1 run, worked to leg, from just outside the off stump. Marvellous nudge that was

Monty going back over the wicket. I forgot to tell you he was around the wicket to the right-hander. So now you know

25.4

Panesar to Gayle, 1 run, firmly clunked to mid-off

25.5

Panesar to Morton, 1 run, a bit too straight, worked off his legs to Bell at mid-on - just wide of him, in fact

25.6

Panesar to Gayle, 1 run, neatly guided out to the off side for another easy end-of-the-over-strike-stealing single

26.1

Mascarenhas to Gayle, no run, ooh lovely ball, swinging into the left hander who's beaten

26.2

Mascarenhas to Gayle, 1 run, clunked out to deep extra cover

A very unGayle-like 85 balls for his fifty

26.3

Mascarenhas to Morton, no run, dropped him! - a firm push forward outside his off stump, a thin outside edge but Prior couldn't hang on

Prior doesn't drop many. But he did drop that

26.4

Mascarenhas to Morton, no run, ooh Morton comes forward, warily so, pushing this to the leg side

26.5

Mascarenhas to Morton, no run, beautiful bowling again, drawing Morton into another decidedly fishy waft. He plays and misses

26.6

Mascarenhas to Morton, no run, and this rather spits up up Morton, who is playing Mascarenhas as though the bowler has a hand grenade. Maybe he does?

27.2

Panesar to Morton, no run, solidly defended on the front foot

27.3

Panesar to Morton, FOUR, powerfully struck, smacking this over mid-on for four. Cleanly hit

27.4

Panesar to Morton, no run, beaten by a touch of turn, the ball takes a thick outside edge

No slips in place, incidentally

27.5

Panesar to Morton, no run, on middle-and-off, Morton sponges it back to Monty

28.2

Mascarenhas to Gayle, no run, swinging into Gayle's pads who times it to a short midwicket

28.3

Mascarenhas to Gayle, 2 runs, powerfully cut to Cook on the extra cover boundary, very well timed but Cook does well to save four

28.4

Mascarenhas to Gayle, no run, "aww, yes" says Prior, as this one darts into Gayle's pads

28.5

Mascarenhas to Gayle, 4 byes, an absolute rip-snorting jaffacracker! It cut back in massively to Gayle who came forward to defend, the ball darting inside the line - evading the stumps, and Prior

Shiny

28.6

29.2

29.3

Panesar to Morton, no run, ooh he pads this away - don't do that, that be dangerous - but only half a shout from Prior

29.4

Panesar to Morton, 1 run, timed down the ground

"Can you tell me what happened to the snakes that used to be in Jamaica?" asks Stick Mareebo. No. Sorry. You don't have the required security clearance (and nor do I)

30.2

Mascarenhas to Gayle, no run, swinging into his pads, Gayle defends

"I'm here, but you never answer me or print my stuff," says the curiously underscored I_am_lion_boy.

30.3

Mascarenhas to Gayle, no run, cracked square of the wicket. Super cracking

30.4

Mascarenhas to Gayle, 1 run, nudged off his hip, Pietersen shies at the stumps but no one's backing up. A terrible throw from Pietersen, to be honest, and all in all a fairly village piece of cricket from England who look half asleep at the moment

30.5

Mascarenhas to Morton, FOUR, bullied down the ground. A front foot bosh, powerfully struck

As ever, coffee, cakes, biscuits or anything vaguely edible are very welcome. We're in W14, London, and starving hungry. Very many many thanks in advance

31.1

Collingwood to Gayle, 2 runs, timed out into the covers

31.2

Collingwood to Gayle, no run, ooh well bowled, rapping him on his pads here - though he got an inside edge. And it was outside the leg stump, both factors making my point that it was "well bowled" utterly inaccurate

31.3

Collingwood to Gayle, no run

31.4

Collingwood to Gayle, 1 run, marvellous delivery, taking the outside edge down to third man

"What's wrong with beer snakes? Or Mexican waves? Or singing?" asks John Starbuck who's obviously never heard Jenny tunelessly bah-bahing away in her sombrero while drinking (appropriately) flat ale.

31.5

32.2

Mascarenhas to Morton, no run, swinging away from the right-hander who defends on the front foot. Again

33.3

Collingwood to Morton, no run, punched to mid-off

"I think they're quite mobile...in areas," says David Lloyd of England's fielding. Hardly glowing praise...

33.4

So then. Good base this, for West Indies. Broad back into the attack

44.1

51 from 71 balls, and a fine innings too

44.2

Broad to Morton, no run, down on one knee Morton laces this...but straight to cover

44.3

Broad to Morton, FOUR, far too short again, Morton climbs into it and pulls it for four once more. Immense power

Collingwood to Morton, 2 runs, pushed down the ground for yet another easy single

End of over 47 (10 runs) West Indies 245/4 (RR: 5.21)
RS Morton    76* (84b 6x4 1x6)      PD Collingwood    7-0-41-0
DJ Bravo    15* (10b 2x4)      LE Plunkett    10-0-59-3

47.1

Anderson to Bravo, no run, full, straight, Bravo tries to scoop this out to point but misses. Clever bowling

47.2

Anderson to Bravo, FOUR, but this is not clever - a full toss on his legs. You can guess the result

47.3

Anderson to Bravo, 1 run, smacked to mid-on - a real smite, but without timing

"Players that sound like dances?" begins? Colin? Wilkinson? "What about Allan Lambada?" That's fine-able.

47.4

Anderson to Morton, 1 bye, ooh a yorker, well bowled, and it very nearly hits the helmet behind Prior, who's been a bit messy today

47.5

Anderson to Bravo, FOUR, shot! Fabulous drive, going inside out, over extra cover. Deserved six

There's West Indies' 250 up

47.6

Anderson to Bravo, 1 run, carved out to point

End of over 48 (11 runs) West Indies 256/4 (RR: 5.33)
DJ Bravo    25* (15b 4x4)      JM Anderson    9-0-37-1
RS Morton    76* (85b 6x4 1x6)      PD Collingwood    7-0-41-0

48.1

Broad to Bravo, 2 runs, hammered out to extra cover for four. No! Shah fields - diving athletically in front of him and saving four with a desperate fling

48.2

Broad to Bravo, FOUR, oh, shot - hit behind square this time, with greater power and that's four

Too wide from Broad. Too much width

Third man comes up. Deep midwicket goes out.

48.3

Broad to Bravo, 2 no balls, a beamer! That'll be a wide, and West Indies go for a run and very nearly lose a wicket in the process

48.3

Broad to Morton, 1 wide, a slower ball, miles wide of the off stump

Robin Franken (stein) monsters in with: "Obviously Courtney Waltz." Dear me, I had thought we couldn't sink lower.

48.3

Broad to Morton, 2 wides, a swing and a miss, another wide - and another near-suicidal run from West Indies. But again, they get it! They're having a ball out there - running England ragged, even if the singles they're stealing are far from comfortable

48.3

Broad to Bravo, FOUR, a beautiful flick from Bravo, taking this from off stump and whipping it behind square for four more. Brilliant

48.4

Broad to Bravo, 1 run, cracked on the up but straight to extra cover

48.5

Broad to Morton, 1 run, swinging into him, it's sponged to leg

48.6

Broad to Bravo, 2 runs, clipped out to deep midwicket

End of over 49 (19 runs) West Indies 275/4 (RR: 5.61)
DJ Bravo    38* (21b 6x4)      SCJ Broad    9-0-71-0
RS Morton    77* (86b 6x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    9-0-37-1

49.1

Anderson to Morton, 2 runs, a full toss outside the off stump which he pulls down to long-on. Plunkett dives, quite brilliantly, and saves four

Excellent work, the like of which we haven't seen enough of today

49.2

Anderson to Morton, 2 runs, squirted out to cover

"Cricket dancers - Arthur Morris," writes Dave Garland.

49.3

Anderson to Morton, 1 run, an almighty heave to long-on - they want three (well, Bravo does) but Morton sends him back

49.4

Anderson to Bravo, (no ball) 2 runs, ooh a big, high, full toss which he tries to pull and gets a thick, skying outside edge over cover

49.4

Anderson to Bravo, 2 runs, flung out over cover

49.5

Anderson to Bravo, OUT, and he drags this onto his stumps - a full delivery which he tries to flay through the covers drags it on

DJ Bravo b Anderson 42 (38m 24b 6x4 0x6) SR: 175.00

92 in 7.5 overs, that stand. Superb work

49.6

Anderson to DR Smith, FOUR, and he's smacked him for four through extra cover. A terrible effort from Alastair Cook out on the boundary who dived over the ball, failing to stop it - and his face rather tells the story for England who have been off the pace today

2.55pm Right, ready for this? (As 2unlimited once nearly sang) Cook and Prior look they are, but my word they have a mountainous task on their hands. Daren Powell has the ball in his.

2.20pm That's the second match in succession West Indies have more than made the most of their last ten overs. Last match they moved from 176 for 2 to 278 for 5, and they've actually bettered that 102 runs today. With 40 overs gone here, West Indies were 173 for 3 and have reached 289 for 5, adding 116. End of over 50 (14 runs) West Indies 289/5
