50.1

Taylor to Bopara, no run, swinging back into the right hander who's solid in defence

Much more swing this afternoon, incidentally. Well - not much more, but noticeably more assistance for the bowlers.

50.2

Taylor to Bopara, 1 run, drops this short of mid-on for a single

50.3

Taylor to Prior, no run, Prior shuffles across to defend on the back foot. Slightly late on the shot, but safely played nevertheless

50.4

50.5

Taylor to Prior, no run, nice and full, holding its line to Prior who drives firmly to mid-off. "Wait on," is the cry, and Bopara agrees

50.6

Taylor to Prior, FOUR, top shot. He is so, so strong on anything short and wide. He almost seemed to guide it instead of cutting it - played it right up on his toes. Smart stuff from Prior - he looks in fine touch

End of over 51 (5 runs) England 156/4

    • MJ Prior 25 (37b 5x4)

51.4

Benn to Prior, no run, an extravagantly played forward defensive

51.5

Benn is furious. He's one of those bowlers who cannot hide his feelings - his face is a mixture of anger and disgust that they managed to get a single

51.6

Benn to Bopara, 1 run, smudged for a single to leg to bring up the pair's fifty stand...

...from 79 balls. Good going, that.

End of over 52 (3 runs) England 159/4

    • RS Bopara 66 (136b 8x4)
    • MJ Prior 26 (39b 5x4)

Lendl Simmons into the attack. First-class bowling average of 25.44 ... but only nine wickets in 60-odd games. Let's see how he fares

52.1

Simmons to Bopara, no run, and he very nearly gets a wicket with his first ball - a horrid attempt at a slap to a wide, swinging delivery

52.2

Oh dear. Depressing tactics, these - assuming that they are tactics

54.4

Simmons to Prior, no run, cut out to the off side

54.5

Simmons to Prior, no run, inswinger but the wrong line, and Ramdin is forced into a dive. And does well

I'm a big fan of Ramdin. Fine keeper and aggressive, nuggety batsman - love his attitude. Anyway. Just thought you should know

57.5

Gayle to Prior, no run, ignored outside off

Tea beckons

57.6

Gayle to Prior, no run, defended on the back foot

Well played Prior. And Bopara. A fascinating session, that, England losing three wickets to a fired-up Fidel Edwards - who bowled quite brilliantly in that spell - but England then counter-attacked impressively, with Prior bringing up his 1000th Test run in a nicely made 42. Bopara has played almost faultlessly, and looks every inch the No.3, though he and England will consider it nothing less than a failure if he doesn't make it through to the close. This is the key partnership - so join us in 20 for the final session.

End of over 58 (3 runs) England 182/4

    • MJ Prior 42 (55b 8x4)
    • RS Bopara 72 (156b 8x4)

58.4

Edwards to Bopara, no run, sprayed well down the leg side, good take from Ramdin

58.5

Edwards to Bopara, no run, dropped, what a moment for West Indies, Nash puts down a sitter at square leg as Bopara flicks one off his toes straight to the fielder. He's normally very safe, and that's a crucial miss

58.6

Edwards to Bopara, 1 run, tucks this just wide of Nash, who collects and hurls at the stumps with a hint of anger as the batsmen complete a comfortable single

End of over 59 (5 runs) England 187/4

MJ Prior c Simmons b Edwards 42 (78m 56b 8x4 0x6) SR: 75.00

62.6

Edwards to Broad, no run, dropped, a fairly tough chance goes down in the gully as Benn can't cling onto a cut shot from Broad...it was travelling quite quickly, but he is a tall man and probably should have held on

The second drop of the day for West Indies and both off Edwards

And that ends the day's play, the first of the summer - and a fascinating one it has turned out to be. We weren't too certain, truth be told, at the start of the day when England tip-toed to 88 for 1 at lunch on a very slow pitch. But Fidel's three wickets really fired things up, before Bopara played an absolute blinder with his second hundred and his first at No.3. England will be over the moon with him. But England should not be so happily placed: West Indies dropped catch after dolly after chance, and their fielding was occasionally a shambles, so England can count themselves very lucky that they weren't skittled for 200. Bopara, of course, remains not out and his is the vital wicket tomorrow morning. Join me, Will Luke, along with Andrew McGlashan, tomorrow morning for the second day's play. For now, it's goodnight.

Sulieman Benn will start off, doubt this will be a long spell and it's probably a change of ends for the quicks before the new-ball is taken.

10.55am We are five minutes away from the action, so get yourselves a cup of tea (or an alternative beverage) and settled down for the first session.

10.50am "The Windies are all blazered up and posing for their tour photo at the moment," informs Andrew...I'm sure they all look very smart

10.40am So what would each team be satisfied with this morning? England would probably be happy to reach 350, while West Indies will have ambitions of restricting them to around 320. Meanwhile, have a read of this piece from Andrew Miller where he compares Bopara's hundred with Nasser Hussain's breakthrough in Test cricket. The similarities are fascinating.

10.35am The light has improved so there shouldn't be an issue with starting on time. Ravi Bopara, the man of the moment, is having a chat with his mentor Graham Gooch who knows a thing or two about batting.

10.20am It's got slightly gloomier, so expect umpires and light meters before we get the all clear. Andrew Miller, from the warmth of the media centre, says it will be "two-sweater weather for the Windies though, which is unlikely to aid their catching". Can it get any worse than it was yesterday?

"The pitch meanwhile looks as blameless as it did on the first morning," he continues. "Plenty more runs to be had in this game, if anyone can show Bopara's application."

9.50am Good morning and welcome to our coverage of the second day of the Lord's Test. It's a cold and gloomy day in London, and while it's not dark enough to prevent play getting underway on time, those brave souls who do come along will need to wrap-up well and rely on warm drinks to prevent hypothermia setting in.

11.40am That was a brief message from Will, it's Andrew here again as the players wander slowly back to the middle. The West Indians have hand-warmers and clearly don't look delighted by conditions. But why on earth did England go off, anyway for now we have cricket again.

11.35am Morning all. Will here. What's going off out there? Well, not a lot - in fact, nothing. It's confusing and disappointing, particularly given Test cricket's reputation at the moment - the respected, wise grandfather to the uppity and precocious Twenty20 stealing everyone's attention. Nobody wants to cuss Test cricket given its tradition, but decisions like these leave us no other choice. The blame will fall on England's batsmen for accepting the light but, actually, the umpires should never have offered it. Yes, Edwards is blindingly fast, but are these trained sportsmen or not? Why didn't the umpires have a quiet word with Chris Gayle, warning him that he and another spinner may have to turn his arm over and replace the quicks? Instead, we are sat here pontificating over a marginal decision, and the paying public are heading to the bar.

11.25am Well, this is a surprise, the umpires have offered the light and England have taken it...no idea why, they were going along very nicely this morning and the momentum was with them. Anyway, of they all march...it's not that dark, but the batsmen didn't have to accept it.

"Shades of Trescothick," says Andrew from Lord's, referring to the 2003 Test against South Africa, at Headingley, when Marcus Trescothick and Mark Butcher took the light when well on top. When play resumed they both got out. This is a chance for West Indies to regroup

95.1

Taylor to Swann, FOUR, great start by Swann, full outside off and he leans into a pleasing cover drive which races to the boundary...so maybe he hasn't lost any momentum

95.2

Taylor to Swann, FOUR, and another, on the up this time as he he threads it through cover...West Indies haven't come out with any greater enthusiasm

95.3

Taylor to Swann, no run, a little more purpose in that delivery, Swann defends to the off side

The West Indies quicks really haven't got into their work this morning

95.4

95.6

"I think you'll find that England took the light because - as in virtually every Test they have played in the last 5 years at least they start of looking for a draw," says the astoundingly named Michael Varcoe-Cocks

96.5

Edwards to Swann, 1 run, back of a length, edged down to third man as he forces off the back foot but there's a third man in...that's a rare position these days

Baker to Swann, no run, short one again, over leg stump and Swann gets out of the line

97.6

Baker to Swann, no run, ends with another harmless bouncer...barely a threat to the batsmen so far today

England have added 42 in eight overs this morning

End of over 98 (4 runs) England 331/7

    • GP Swann 40 (54b 7x4)
    • RS Bopara 124 (257b 14x4)
    • LS Baker 19-4-63-0
    • FH Edwards 22-4-70-4
98.1

Edwards to Bopara, no run, good yorker, but Bopara is down on it and digs the ball out back along the pitch

98.2

Edwards to Bopara, no run, outside off, hint of movement, left alone

98.3

Edwards to Bopara, no run, comes half forward and defends in very relaxed fashion into the covers

Bopara looks so chilled out in everything he does

98.4

Edwards to Bopara, no run, full outside off, actually pitches level with the stumps as Bopara lets it go

98.5

Edwards to Bopara, FOUR, top shot, short outside off, Bopara goes up and over point with the timing and placement to beat the cover sweeper

98.6

Edwards to Bopara, FOUR, elegance, grace and timing...a brilliant on drive from Bopara that races past mid-on, that's one of his best

Apart from the decision to take the light that has been a great first hour for England...West Indies have been very poor. Now it's over to Will Luke.

End of over 99 (8 runs) England 339/7

    • RS Bopara 132 (263b 16x4)
    • GP Swann 40 (54b 7x4)
    • FH Edwards 23-4-78-4
    • LS Baker 19-4-63-0

Thanks, Gnasher. "Oddly enough," starts an Australian called Lawrence, "England's last 10 overs is better than Bangalore's is currently. Go figure."

99.1

Baker to Swann, no run, cuts back into Swann who gets into a bit of a tangle trying to defend, and it raps him on the hand

99.2

Baker to Swann, no run, short of a length and cutting back into Swann who goes back to defend

99.3

Baker to Swann, no run, another nasty one which jabs back jaggedly on Swann who is much less comfortable playing off the back foot. He's taking a few bruises right now

99.4

Baker to Swann, no run, a bouncer, he goes for a hook but can't make contact

Good, slippery bowling this. West Indies have bowled far, far too full all morning - until now

99.5

Baker to Swann, no run, a bit of a waste this time, wide of the off stump and fortunate for Baker that it wasn't wided

99.6

Baker to Swann, no run, even wider. Swann needed a six-foot-long bat to reach that

End of over 100 (maiden) England 339/7

    • RS Bopara 132 (263b 16x4)
