Wilf Hughes was a fast bowler and capable lower middle-order batsman who prospered in Welsh and then Northamptonshire leagues before he came to Glamorgan's attention. A science teacher, he had moved to Kettering believing there was no chance of him playing county cricket for a living when, on a visit to play Northants, Maurice Turnbull, Glamorgan's captain, was told about a young Welsh lad getting " a bag of wickets every week". Hughes was invited for a trial and on arriving in Cardiff was drafted into the XI to play the touring South Africans. He helped add 131 for Glamorgan's tenth wicket, making an unbeaten 70 with some style. He played regularly throughout much of the rest of the summer with less success, and made himself available for selection in school holidays for the next few summers. The war ended his first-class career, but he played afterwards for Devon.
