A senior executive with Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, BC Cooray was one of Sri Lanka's leading umpires throughout the 1990s but his career came to a sad end when he retired after making a string of shocking decisions in the Test against England at Kandy in 2000-01, leading to public demonstrations against him. He was, until then, considered to be a good official, albeit one who was stubborn and who was reluctant to admit to ever being wrong.
