Hubert Preston edited Wisden Cricketers' Almanack for eight years from 1944 to 1951 when he was succeeded by his son, Norman. Educated at the City of London School, he joined The Guardian before a brief spell in Canada as a farmer. Returning to England in 1895, he joined Pardon's Cricket Reporting Agency - which produced Wisden - and he remained with them until his retirement in 1951. He also reported on football. He was a useful club cricketer, and once took a hat-trick at Lord's, playing for Press against Authors. He was profoundly deaf, using an ear trumpet before more discreet hearing aids became available.
