Rawalpindi Rams 164 (Zia 43, Sohail 5-23) beat Karachi Dolphins (Rameez 64, Hasan 3-24) via Super Over
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Eighteen-year-old left-arm spinner Raza Hasan was the hero for Rawalpindi Rams as he held his nerve in the Super Over to hand them the Faysal Bank Super Eight T20 title. Rawalpindi seemed to have fluffed their chances of victory against Karachi Dolphins at the Iqbal Stadium when they managed only one run in the final four balls of their chase of 165 to leave the game tied. But after they smashed 16 in the Super Over it was Karachi's turn to flounder, scoring only one off the final four deliveries of their over to slump to defeat. Sohail Khan took five wickets for Karachi but it wasn't enough to secure victory.

Awais Zia did all the scoring for Rawalpindi in the Super Over, slapping two fours and a six to negate the effect of the two dot balls he played. It was a tough target for Karachi but Khalid Latif began with a big six over long-on. The 18-year-old Hasan, though, hit back by getting Latif to top-edge to short fine-leg off the next ball. The third delivery saw a dropped catch which resulted in a single, and then Hasan bowled three dot balls in a row as Shahzaib Hasan struggled to get bat on ball.

There was plenty of drama before the closing skirmish too. Karachi had made a sluggish start after being sent in, reaching 34 for 1 in five overs, before the batsman of the tournament, Rameez Raja, gave the innings some impetus with two fours and two sixes in the sixth over. His partner Asad Shafiq was dismissed lbw by Hasan for a 26-ball 36 and that again slowed the Karachi innings. Though they had blasted 91 in the first ten overs, and had wickets in hand, they could only add 73 in the last ten.

Rawalpindi's chase got off to a horror start as Sohail struck twice in the second over. Zia slammed six fours in eight deliveries to inject some momentum into the chase before another double-strike from Sohail, in the sixth over, left Rawalpindi gasping at 56 for 4. A flurry of boundaries from Adnan Mufti kept them alive before a couple of sixes from Hammad Azam evened the game.

Two big hits from Mohammad Rameez made it 22 needed off the final three overs with three wickets in hand. Sohail returned to revive Karachi, getting Rameez with a slower yorker and giving away only three runs in the 18th over. Rawalpindi scrambled 10 off the next over and when Umar Amin muscled the second ball of Azam Hussain's final over for six, Rawalpindi needed only two to win off four deliveries. They couldn't get them, though, and Amin watched helplessly as wickets fell off the final two balls with the scores level. Any momentum Karachi may have gained from clawing back to tie the game proved meaningless in the Super Over as Hasan repaid the faith his captain showed in him.

@ Nasir_Mahmood_Malik - Pakistan is already planning to start a PPL in Dubai & this was planned even before the IPL started but never implemented. But it seems they will start after SLPL (Sri Lankan Priemier League) is over...

Btw, no team from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa....?

  • Nasir_Mahmood_Malik on July 3, 2011, 4:34 GMT

I think PCB should give BCCI a taste of their own medicine. i.e. host a champions league of their own (not necessarily in Pakistan) and invite team from around the world except India.

    How's that?

  • AkmalFan on July 3, 2011, 2:22 GMT

Rawalpindi is a very good team. They deserved it because they worked hard. I was upset by the way Peshawar played.

  • TapeBall on July 2, 2011, 18:55 GMT

just wondering that if Ralwalpindi Rams and Karachi Dolphins get a chance to play with any IPL Team. The Way Rameez Raja, Raza Hasan, Sohail Khan, Asad Shafiq played the game it shows that Pakistan is full of talented cricketers just need to get an oppertunity to show their talent.

  • darkknight1072 on July 2, 2011, 18:23 GMT

I think both (lahore & rawalpindi) should go to CL. After all, IPL is sending at least 3 teams.

  • sal80 on July 2, 2011, 17:26 GMT

This final match has set a really high standards which can meet any million dollar tournment final like IPL, in IPL there was far more and better stars but on they day even they failed to click, but here SOHAIL TANVEER led ramps won great game and heart also... KARACHI team shows agreat fight back special there bowler sohail , asad & khalid latif was superb...this type of talent mustbe given a chance to play in any high level tournment... I HOPE NEXT TIME TEAM FRM PAK WIL NOT BE IGNORED IN Champions league i think team frm pak is much better then boring teams frm africa NZ & england.

  • liaqathussain on July 2, 2011, 12:47 GMT

shame i missed it, but seems like the best match of the tournament

  • on July 2, 2011, 12:07 GMT

now its time that raza hassa, ramiz raja, jamal anwar, sharjeel khan these boys must be picked for pakistan team coz they showed their talent,,,,,specially jamal anwar coz ghe is young wicket keeper which pak team needs badly he shows his batting also in this tournament

  • anasajaz on July 2, 2011, 11:15 GMT

we lost shaoib akhter but now we have SOHAIL KHAN,,,

  • anasajaz on July 2, 2011, 11:00 GMT

I was listening to one of the commentators saying ground staff should hav made a batting friendly pitch, but look at the result man ! it was an awesome battle between bat and bowl, shazaib hasan wass all over the place when ball was seaming around but asad shafiq was a class, muhammad rameez bowled and exceptional over to shazaib, rameez raja battled suprbly in the start but then he wasted many deliveries trying to slog leg side only, pindi bowlers used the conditions well, nd than sohail khan.. what a wonderful spell he bowled, still batsman punished other bowlers, pindi has no stars but they got a TEAM everyone contributed and they deserve it... My praise for the ground staff for making such a lively pitch and exposing slog hitters like shahzaib.. thats the reason he doesnt survive in international level

  • Riz-Khan on July 2, 2011, 10:33 GMT

As i saw all favourable comments about our nation cricket, i was not expecting the such a wonderful final match in which RWP rams shows wonderful batting plan, especially Awais Zia, Raza hassan and Umer Amin

Beside this KHI Dolphin's Sohail Khan and Rameez is very fantastic new talent, Hope that in future Organizers will think about Pakistan Premier League.

WE HAVE TALENT BUT WE DONT HAVE TALENTLED SELECTION COMMITTEE FOR NATIONAL TEAM, HOPE THAT SELECTORS WILL NOT IGNORE OUR FUTURE STARS NOW.

  • darkknight1072 on July 2, 2011, 10:26 GMT

Great to see PAK cricket doing well, inspire of last few years of crisis. Hope they get inducted into CL soon. Good luck.

  • on July 2, 2011, 8:51 GMT

Kudos to all teams, without the presence of star players, this tournament sure gathered the hopes and attentions of Pakistanis in Pakistan and abroad. This is Cricket Pakistan

  • on July 2, 2011, 8:38 GMT

I thought CRICINFO gonna cover the whole tournament but thax for covering last 3 awesome matches. Well by watching this, i gotta feeling that PCB can start league without international players. still that will be a big hit. Final was awesome and thax GOD, trophy remains in Punjab. Raza hassan, rameez raja, Awais zia were awesome.

  • lethal007 on July 2, 2011, 8:23 GMT

I have read comments about indian cricket that so much talent is waiting in the hutch to replace big guns............. but when it comes about pure talent without any institution like IPL Champions league or county .... Pak is best for producing gem of the players and T20 domestic final is just a fabulous example....... Rameez Raza, Raza Hassan, Umer Amin, Hammad Azam,Sarfraz sohail khan they all are super stars for tomorrow.......... for eliminating us from champions league they wnt take cricket from us......... VIVA LA PAkISTAN

  • on July 2, 2011, 4:27 GMT

It was a fabulous final......Kudos to young guns of Rawalpindi ........ Karachi had strings of SuperStars and after their demolitions of Fasialabad and Sialkot they were expected to do better..............

Great match overall...looking forward to Raza Hassan in the team, he is perhaps more lethal then Abdul Rehman

  • ejsiddiqui on July 2, 2011, 4:13 GMT

It was an amazing match, we people love to watch high standard domestic matches as well. I don't know why PCB is not organizing a proper Pakistan Premier League.

Foreign players are not necessary, but it would be good if they come. We do have many multinationals who would go for sponsorship if public shows its interest, and public is showing a huge interest.
