The younger brother of Basil, Ivan D'Oliveira arrived in England in 1966 with a reputation as a hard-hitting batsman who had scored heavily in the segregated leagues in South Africa. Playing for Western Province in 1961-62 in the inter-provincial non-white tournament, he made 356 runs at 59.33 including 145 in 100 minutes against Griqualand West. He joined Kidderminster, his brother's club, and played once for Leicestershire against Cambridge University, making 0. He also played half-a-dozen 2nd XI matches for the county as a top-order batsman, making 270 runs at 30.
