William Soppitt played for Middlesex Colts a decade before his first-class debut for South in 1887. The wait did him no good as he bagged a pair batting in the middle order. Three weeks later he made his one Middlesex appearance and opening the bowling against Oxford University he took 5 for 152 as the county lost by an innings.
