Tony Brown was a stalwart of the Gloucestershire side for more than two decades. A right-arm medium-pace bowler and lower middle-order batsman, he was good enough to pass 1000 runs in a season once (1964) and 100 wickets twice (1959 and 1962). He was also an excellent close fielder and in 1966 took seven catches in an innings to equal the world record. He took over as captain in 1969, leading the county to the Gillette Cup in 1973. After retiring he became secretary-manager of the side before moving on to Somerset in 1983 and subsequently the TCCB (the forerunners of the ECB). He returned to Gloucestershire as chairman of cricket and in 2008 was named as club president.
