Rob Taylor made his debut for Leicestershire's Second XI in May 2008 at the age of 18 but it was three years later when he was pitted against his own county that he began to make himself noticed. He compiled a match-saving unbeaten century as Loughborough MCCU secured a draw in a three-day match at Grace Road, quite a job application. On his first-class debut for Leicestershire against Surrey at Grace Road in August of the same year, he hit 70 in the first innings and took 3 for 53.
