Somerset sign Kevin O'Brien for Twenty20s

ESPNcricinfo staff

Ireland allrounder Kevin O'Brien has been signed by Somerset to play five Friends Life t20 matches, the first of which is against Warwickshire on June 13. The county's other overseas players are South Africa's Richard Levi and Albie Morkel.

"Kevin is a very attractive batsman who can score his runs very quickly and will add to our already exciting batting line up," Somerset's director of cricket, Brian Rose, said.

O'Brien, who scored the fastest World Cup hundred against England in Bangalore in 2011, represented Gloucestershire in the Twenty20 competition last year and scored a 44-ball century - the fastest in English cricket. He has scored 807 runs and taken 28 wickets in 56 Twenty20 matches so far.

Phil Simmons, the Ireland coach, supported the signing. "This is another great opportunity for Kevin to improve his knowledge and skills in the Twenty20 format, which will no doubt help improve him further as a player and help prepare him for the upcoming Twenty20 internationals against Bangladesh in July and South Africa A in August, which all build up to the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka this September."

@Munkeymomo on (June 11 2012, 11:23 AM GMT) Yeah think you mentioned about trying to contact VDM before. Guess it's disappointing to get no response. I'm just surprised Gloucs didn't keep KOB if he was decent. Re Somerset this season , I'm disappointed with not being able to use VP so regularly , injury of Tres , Thomas not coming back from IPL earlier even though Pune weren't playing him half the time , Gayle's U turn , No overseas player for CB40 , unsure about the T20 signings and of course very frustrated by weather which prob cost us championship win vs Notts (who are above us) and def vs Durham , but prob saved us vs Middx. However I'm really pleased with how well we've competed in CC with such a depleted squad. One of the Overton lads has done well , George has done well in CC and Trego has started taking more wickets. Not to mention the rock. Do you know how far away Tres is?

@JG: I asked Roelof a few times on twitter what the problem was and if it was likely to be sorted out or not but no reply. Regarding K'OB, his stats from last year were pretty decent to be honest, averaged 30 with a SR of 160, but that would have been inflated by the hundred, remove that from the stats and you get an average of 18 with a SR of 140, that still OK considering the hit-or-miss nature of T20 but its not great. He bowls too though, though his bowling stats were not much better, 2 wks, average of 78 and econ of 9.85. Saying all this I think he'll be a good signing, surround Compton/Hildreth with Power hitters and hopefully we'll see some big scores. Levi is the signing I am more concerned with, I would have liked RVDM back but as he cannot play, I would have liked to see a bowler in (Ashok Dinda impressed me during the IPL, would have been happy to sign him).

I'm not 100% convinced by KOB.He had that blinding inns vs England but I sometimes wonder if it was a one off.I'm wondering why Gloucs did not keep hold of him if he was that great? I'm not convinced by Somerset's signings this season. No overseas player available to play CB40s and I think this has shown in our form in that competition and while I was practically salivating over signing Phillander but the amount of games he's played/overs bowled has made me think that maybe it wasn't the best signing. Re T20 I've never been 100% convinced by Morkel although I know he can be dangerous down the order and re Levi , I've not seen him play but some comms on here said he had a hype about him based on 1 inns.Obviously Somerset were hampered by Gayle renaging on his contract in T20. Also does anyone know who they may be signing as their overseas player for the 2nd part of the CC season? Was disappointed RVDM wasn't retained and no one seems to know what the prob was with his visa?

As an Ireland fan, Im delighted for Big Kev. Their line up is looking frightening - Kieswetter, Trego, Big Kev, Morkel, Levi, Joss Butler... and Trescothick is still to come back!
