PROFESSOR CYRIL TYLER, who died on January 25, at the age of 84, played 16 matches for Gloucestershire from 1936 to 1938 as a right-arm medium-pace off-break and occasional leg-spin bowler. He took 33 wickets with a best innings analysis of 5 for 116 against Middlesex at Lord's, a performance which caused him to be mentioned as an England prospect. A Yorkshireman from Ossett, he had great success as a teenager in the Heavy Woollen League. He became an agricultural chemist at Cirencester Agricultural College in 1939, eventually becoming Vice-Chancellor of Reading University it 1968, until retiring in 1976.
